Arranging the music of one song...

"Gerudo Valley"

Primary Game: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo , 1998, N64), music by Koji Kondo

The Gerudo Valley theme from Zelda 64 is one of my favorite pieces by legendary Nintendo composer Koji Kondo, and judging from the number of ReMixes submitted and posted, it appears to have a similar appreciation amongst others. It hasn't been done like this before, tho - DJ Pheonix brings his breakbeat style to the tune, with clean synths and sweetly syncopated breakbeats with heavy dosages of repeats, retriggers, sample+hold, and pitch funkiness. Introing with rapid-fire chords on a straight, unprocessed synth guitar, Pheonix builds the mix nicely, taking no time to bring in da drums and main melody, but holding off nicely with the bass until 0'53". What follows is a well-thought out mix that definitely wasn't done on autopilot - all the elements play off one another in a tight rhythmic trade-off that's pure ear candy. More variety and interaction that some of Pheonix's other pieces, which is good to see as well. Definitely recommended, even if you have all the other Gerudo mixes :)

I loved this remix 7 or 8 years ago when I first found the site. I showed it to my family and they were like "um okay"

Yeah, it hasn't aged well. It's a pretty repetitive track with weak samples. It still makes me feel warm and nostalgic, though.

The fast intro really got me hooked. And the drums were cool, as I also appreciate non-autopilot. However, the synth lead got annoying after the first minute. I just couldn't listen to the whole thing.

I remember this song!

I used to be a fan of it back in 2002 or so. Now? Not so much. The samples really show their dating, and the last 30 seconds or so were sort of a waste. The song just doesn't have enough substance as it is.

the intro was the only thing i liked... :?

it sounded like it'd be cool and turn into a heavy rock out of gerudo, but instead i got plucky garbagey noises that poorly emulated the original song (this could all just be my hearing loss mind you, maybe it sounds good to people who can hear low frequency sounds.)

Honestly, is it just my hearing loss, or does this piece stray from the original composition, bordering that it is it's own unique and original piece?

Going to have to agree with most people. Not a fan of this mix. The intro really kills it for me, and I'm not overly crazy about dnb stuff anyways. If your into the style, you'll probably like it, though. Give it a chance at least.

I got a good laugh when the song started. The straight up midi guitar is hilarious. add the ungrounded drums and synths that spasm without any sort of anchor and you have a mix that i'm just not a fan of. Sorry :(

Acid? DnB?

Whatever you want to call it, if you like it fast and hard this isn't a bad track to check out.

The synths leave something to be desired but the good old amen snare will never get old. It's like the staple of beats aggresive. IMO, this track becomes substantial when the bass comes in.

Could've been better but it's not at all bad.

That HAS to be fruityloops or FL Studio. Why? The guitar sound.

I would recognize that anywhere, but I may be wrong.

I also recognize alot of the drums. You never know.

DB rules! When done right anyway. I like the percussion, and the bass, but that main synth gets a little bit annoying later on... With some more variety in the lead melody, this could be a perfect mix.

Nice percussion - it IS automated though, but smoothly enough that I only noticed it restarting the loop three times throughout the song. The bass is effective, but also automated. However for both the bass and percussion there are a few breaks throughout the song, each lasting a measure, in which the rythmn switches to something new briefly - then it's back to the same.

Seriously needs some sort of smooth pad, instead of relying on the complex and continuous drum patterns to cover it - hrm, I'm listening to hear whether there is a pad and I just didn't notice it. Nope, the only thing resembling a pad sounds to be resonances from the weird, spacey sound that acts out the melody. Which by the way is extremely repetitive considering that it's volume and piercing quality makes it quite prominent. I'd recommend something smoother for that. For a pad, a quiet ensemble of strings (cellos maybe, or a mix of course) would sound nice, even as the only non-electronica.

The current choice of instruments (that high pitched thing, lack of padding) forces you to pay attention. If it were a bit less arresting, then you could just play it as background and the repitition would not be an issue.

You can't say anything respectable, can you? Its just insult after insult, a complement, insult and insult. Respectless.:evil:

The intro is UGLY. If you can survive past that then you will be pleasantly surprised.

9/10

genre: Drum and Bass (jungle)

This is an excellent drum and bass remix, I think that any DnB lovers should definately love this piece, It's on my most listened to CDs. I give it a 9/10, just because it starts sounding repetitive after a while, other than that it's a great remix!!

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 'This Valley Rocks'

Intro makes this song sound like it's gonna be a disappointment, but if you're at all into DnB or Jungle this song does not disappoint. If nothing Else, DJ Pheonix shows us drum work done right - very intricate, and not at all repetitive. The other instruments are nothing special, though nothing horrible, but if you've got any appreciation for DnB at all then download this and listen to what DJ Pheonix can do.
