Alrighty then. So I had promised myself my next ReMix would be made using Nuendo, would be hip-hop, and would be of a game not yet covered on the site. How well did I do? Well, 1 out of 3 ain't bad . . . actually, it is, BUT I made the mistake of double-clicking the GYM file whilst I was perusing my collection of game soundtracks, and the second I heard this theme, memories of this fantastic game + soundtrack came back and I "knew it must be done". Really, folks, try this game at least once - to me, it's one of the best side-scrollers out there, and probably my favorite soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro, which is sayin' a mouthful. This short little mix of Chinatown (mix name is a bit of an in-joke, couldn't resist) does in fact use Nuendo, with two instances of FM7, Halion, Model-E, and a synth solo by my Motif, being driven by Nuendo (with audio routed back to Nuendo . . . first time I've done that on a mix). It's techno funk, with a definite emphasis on drum-programming. Main melody is carried by crystalline FM7 pads, and the drums are actually a kit that's been out of commission since I took down my Ensoniq ASR-10 that I used in some of my older mixes. Two kits actually. Well, anyway, I had fun, esp. with the bassline, which is markedly different from the original and has more of a forward push to it. I couldn't sit at 50 ReMixes forever, however nice and round a number that is, and this felt like a good way to get 51 out of the way. Turn it up a bit, volume came out low in mastering :)

Really solid drums/rhythm throughout, works super well with the ambience of the main theme. Synth lead in the second half doesn't overstay it's welcome or go over the top. Super easy to listen to. Nice and simple.

The soundtrack on Revenge of Shinobi is fantastic. It demonstrates really well the capability of the Genesis/Mega Drive. The soundscape here is really pretty and soothing. The drums keep the mix moving whilst not pushing it on too far or drawing attention away from the chilled lead lines. If you're wanting a chillout track to relax or work to, this is what you've been searching for. Great stuff, reccommended to to both shinobi and non-shinobi fans.

I'm not a fan of this remix, it sounds WAY different from the original track, If I didnt know the name of this remix I would've never guessed China Town.

This could've used the low end brought out a little more I think - production could use some improvement with the volume levels in general I felt. I wish the song was longer as well, but this isn't a bad effort at all.

Great beats. I love actually walking through my Chinatown with this on, especially on hot afternoons. Mm...dumplings *mind wanders*

meh, Not bad, but it just isn't really doing much for me.

There isn't really too much to grab my attention here.

I enjoyed the percussion and the synths very much. The whole thing had a kind of retro feel to it, which I liked a lot. For some reason it reminded me of a Sonic soundtrack (Sonic 3 or CD maybe).

Drumwork is solid, which really drives the piece. Melody is nice, which kept me interested.

Not sure if I'm sold on the synth choices, but I think it's more an age factor at this point. Nothings bad about them, but I would like to hear more realistic flutes, for example. I imagine it was pretty good for it's time, though, so I'm not really complaining.

Nice work overall.

The title of my post's kind of ambiguous, but that's only encompassing way I could think of to describe this track. It's so many things, at once- relaxing, but it drives you while it unwinds you.

I only wish it were longer. Hmm, it actually makes me feel like going across the bridge to Chinatown and eating something yummy on a summery evening after a thunderstorm or something ^^.

How did I not hear this track?

Crunchy beats, lush pads and a pretty funky synth bass.

The monoglide lead solo is kinda buried and some of the modulation is so-so but otherwise this track is a good listen.

Ambient beats mixed with some very nice synths, this is a really nice track. The main motif sounds good, but what really makes this is the lead lines that are layered over it. The synths are super clean and have a very appealing sound to them.

One thing that I would have preferred would have been a more driving beat, especially in the kick. I think it would have lost a bit of the tranquil feeling it has now, but would have gained a lot more forward momentum.

Regardless, this is still a good mix and seems to be a bit overlooked judging by the number of comments.

THIS TRACK NEEDS MORE REVIEWS I mean come on now.

It's really slick smooth, sounding unlike all of djp's other mixes. I can never remember how the song goes except for the first seconds of the song, but instead I just remember how soothing it sounds the rest of the way through, and then it never gets so old that I have to delete it, unlike all the PunchOut mixes on this site...

The original is one of Yuzo Koshiro's best and also the best game tracks of all time. DJP did a great job adding to this, such as most the second half of the mix. I'm surprised no one else has reviewed this. I may be doing a more ethnic take of this mix in the future, I hope I can do something of this quality. Great production values in here as well. Excellent work DJP.
