Jose has his own style going on, sort of a techno funk, but with a very recognizable sound to it. His mixes are especially strong on rhythm and he's got a good ear for a groove. I'm not too keen on orchestra hits as a sound in general, which are used here in his latest ReMix, covering the 8-bit sidescrollin' Tecmo classic Ninja Gaiden. Even when they're used in a musical fashion as they are here, something about the sampled quality of hits in general can sometimes strike me the wrong way. But I digress. This entire track essentially revolves around a frenetic piano pattern that repeats as the chords beneath it descend, with an occassional string laden break in the pattern (where the hits come in). I especially like what Jose's done with the funky bass and drums here - actually would have liked to have heard a few bars of just those two elements as they're strong enough to warrant some special attention. Also noticed that the mix sits dead center of the stereo field and doesn't branch out left or right much. But none of those trifles is enough to take away the enjoyability or quality of the ReMix. I listened to it several times and it definitely grew on me each time. Nice stuff from Jose.

hey there, unfortunately, I did submit a updated 2009 version, but was shot down by the judges :( lol, IMO if you liked this very old version, the new one would've interested you . Better sounds and less repetition. If you want i can email you the new one or you can check it out at vgmix here:

I'm in agreement with Larry here - the source seems to carry this mix pretty strongly here. It also could use quite some expansion. It's not a bad start, but I'd like to hear this mix with an upgrade all around.

OA's review made me laugh. Now I can't get that picture out of my head. Damn him!

Reguardless, aside from the orchestral hits, I found this to be pretty good. Nowadays it sounds dated, but that's ok with me. I like the descending chord over the static piano line, but I'm a sucker for that sort of harmony. Nice work.

Strangely likeable, although it indeed sounds pretty dated.

Funky and with a strong 80's vibe. The orchestra stabs are pretty rofltastic, it makes me think of Dave Chappele wandering through a club and seeing that dude that was always doing the robot. This is off the scale on the cheese-o-meter but I can't help but like it, just needed to be longer, with a spot for some breaks.

This is what the Ninja Gaiden cutscene would look like:

*pan over a decaying city street, rife with thugs*

*side view of Ryu with speed lines*

Ryu: I will avenge my father!!!

*cut to tough looking boss thug*

Boss: I will stop you right here!!!

*cut to shot of thugs holding bats and chains*

*cut to cardboard on the ground*

Boss: Your journey ends here!!!

*cut to ryu's eye*

Ryu: Let's get funky!

*Bboy battle*

*fade to black*

Man, that is pretty dated. I love how beginner-Gray was all over this mix back in the day. Source material pretty much carries it though. Had some tacky orchestral stabs in there as well for the win. Loops at :57. Decent approach, but a lot of the top names were pumping out much better quality even then.

If you want something fun to listen to this is definitely one to check out. This is a lot like Jose's Golden Axe and Magician Lord mix. Jose's personal style is one that's pretty unique in our community. Cool.

I loved this remix personally, especially for a 2 minute remix, I thought it was well done. Glad to see more Ninja Gaiden remixes coming along, a great series with great music. :D

I just wanted to say that the style that Jose Acosta is commonly called "Freestyle". In the city where I live "NYC" this style was very common in the early late 80's and early 90's. If anyone can recall any of these groups, you'll know what I mean: TKA, Coro, Little Suzy, etc. Orch hits were used a lot in those days.

This style is still very common in the Philipenes. Sometimes they will have freestyle night at a club/radio in NYC. Fun to dance to.

Bottom line, anyone who remembers freestyle would appreciate this 'freestyle remix' of Ninja Gaiden.

Ninja Gaiden 'Emulated'

Nice mix from Jose Acosta. This is a short one, but manages to make it feel complete (which seems to be a rare accomplishment for remixes that are under 2 minutes long). My only complaint would be the samples, in particular the synth hits, but overall this is a worthy download.
