ReMix:Chrono Trigger "Dream of Zeal" 3:03

Arranging the music of one song...

"Corridor of Time"

Primary Game: Chrono Trigger (Square , 1995, SNES), music by Nobuo Uematsu, Noriko Matsueda, Yasunori Mitsuda

Posted 2002-04-27, evaluated by the judges panel

Judges liked this one a lot, and so do I. A lot of their comments actually centered around the fact that it's yet ANOTHER ReMix of the Chrono Trigger 'Zeal' theme, which seems to get a lot o' lovin' here at OCR, but what can you do when a lot of talented people all want to take a stab at the same track? Newcomer Jordan Aguirre, alias bLiNd, makes a strong initial offering with this nice electro-groove that uses trance-style synth textures but is more groove-oriented. Over a solid, rolling beat and a good sub bass (yes, you can actually tell the difference), you can tell from the very beginning on this one that the right elements are there. One judge writes: "The synth lines are very fun and the swirling pads covering the filler for the chords make a nice contrast. The lead line has a great ravy sound to it, reminds me of a dune track or something.", which sounds about right to me. The quality of the sounds used have a lot to do with the overall appeal of this mix, as the essential melody / arrangement remains similar to the original. For me, the coolest bit was the striking higher descencding synth line used as a hit of sorts at 0'16" and elsewhere - it's abrupt and dramatic and perfect for the part. Can't argue with the intro either, which has the lead filtering through the deftly mixed drum track. So what if we have a lot of Zeal mixes? With this excellent submission, bLiNd joins the not-so-few, the proud, the mixers with a zeal for Zeal (okay, you can kill me for that one). Highly recommended.

Another hit song that i like from bLiNd. It has a great atmosphere but my only complaint is that its too short.

Wow, i'm reviewing bLiNd's debut OCR track. :o

His production even years back was good, and for 2002 it was waaaay ahead of the pack. Arrangement plays it pretty safe, as it sounds like a really nice sound upgrade, but there are enough percussive changes to save it from lockdown I guess. :-)

This would fit really well in game, and while it's not as mindblowingly awesome as bLiNd's more recent stuff, it holds up very well.

As far as Zeal mixes go (and they do go, on and on and on), this remains the most memorable for me. I'm someone that played most of Chrono Trigger as a young person and didn't even think about the music at all, so when I caught up with OCR and listened to the pages and pages of CT tracks, I didn't get much nostalgia, but I finally got to appreciate the CT score. So, it is DreamOfZeal that I think about when someone mentions Zeal theme. There's something about it that is now etched into my recollection. Is there any greater compliment than having the ability to usurp the original? Probably.

Well, its not a case of how simple the change would be. Imagine walking up to your favourite band and asking them to change the sounds they use because you think some other ones would be better for what you think the music is about.

Also, if you want more of the original's essence, listen to the original?

I realise, all this stuff... ofc. I thought though, if the lead synth was a sound font, then it could simply be changed.. The request, was basically to restore a little more of the original's essence. I found everything except the lead synth, to be perfect as a part of this style of remix..

Also, it's somewhat unlikely (although not entirely impossible) that bLiNd doesn't even have the workfiles anymore. So even if he actually would be willing to change that sample, the original work would be gone and there would be no way to make any such change without completely restarting the song from scratch. Theoretically.

I very much doubt that anyone would make a change to their music just because someone else didn't like the lead sound. Maybe if you pointed out some clipping or something wrong with it, then yeah, its about improving it, so thats fine. This is just personal preference, so its very unlikely.

Also, a specific request like this is better off with a direct PM or email to the artist as opposed to a public request.

EDIT: Oh yeah this is what mods do, whoops.

There is about a 0.01% chance of this kind of request being fulfilled, asking someone to even minorly redo a 5 year old track. Your best best is an email directly to bLiNd, not our boards, but I dunno how you'd practically expect a request like this to be fulfilled.

hey,

Just thought i'd request an edition of this track. Firstly, I thought the track was great. I guess its hard to make the zeal theme sound bad, but still :P The only element I disliked was the umm lead synth thing, the track starts great and then, as soon as lead starts I feel its integrity loses something.. was wondering if you could perhaps use a version of the original lead, which is more like, umm a single note tapping.. dammit, im not good at explaining.. but the lead you had, bLiNd was just too smooth, and because the other synth elements are smooth too, there is no contrast... and contrast is life baby!

If you read this, and in the unlikely event understand what im saying, and in the even more unlikely event that you want to make this edition but are unclear about something, please reply :P

3 r.o.

bLiNd's first ReMix was truly a prelude of things to come. A little rougher than his later submissions, but still undeniably well made. It's got more of a liquid feel to it. Just sublime.

Yeah it does bring Zeal back into it. I myself, have found the zeal song to be mediocre to begin with, but it certainly has been improved upon. Good work.

It is a melody I could seriously chill out, after a nights dancing. And yes it is a great remix. No doubt about it, but well the Chrono Trigger melodies are some of my favourite remixes on this site :)

Instead of boring old string, it would have been nice to hear a distortion guitar for the melody... :-D

Other than that, nice work!

bLiNd-All of your trance work is great ever since I heard your first Star Fox Space Cowboys song, and this is no exception. The original song was cool in emotion just like this one.

On another note, I think "A Shot of Crisis" is one of the most under-rated songs in CT and you also have a pretty good remix of it on your website; the other songs are very nice too.

Man, Zeal is a beautiful track, but bLiNd made it better. It´s trance, I think, but whatever it is, it´s calm, smooth, chill,... there are many words but only one conclusion: bLiNd rocks. 8)
