Arranging the music of one song...
"The Man with the Machine Gun"
Primary Game: Final Fantasy VIII (Square , 1999, PS1), music by Nobuo UematsuPosted 2002-10-05, evaluated by djpretzel
This ReMix replaces Dain's previous submission of trance coverage from Final Fantasy 8 (OCR00461 - removed due to updated version) - it's a much-improved, cleaned up take, with better overall sound quality, esp. in the arena of synth patches and processing. Dain was never quite happy with the original when he first submitted it, and there were several versions even back then. This time, I think he got things right, with an extended mix that plays around with some new ideas towards the end and feels much more professional all-around. Good techno-trance work from Beatdrop, righting a past "wrong" and giving us some direct, fast-paced FF8 tunage.

well, Beatdrop lives up to his name by emphasizing the beats here over everything else. The A theme motif played throughout the B section is distractingly off-color though. The breakdown works, and the song is well produced, but I think that the mixing of beats is overpowering, and there are some tonal issues that are a bit dissonant. Not my favorite, but I can appreciate the skill going into making it.

I played this game in and out a hundred times and theire aint nothing better than a good Final Fantasy song. I loved all the original tracks of the game making me hard to impress but this just topped all! A+ ***** (5 star) form me!

It´s quite the dangerous task to remix Laguna into a BETTER techno, the original was already freaking awesome, but I think BD succeded. This is a decent upgrade of the original, used some new technics and Voilà! Homme avec un machine de trance!

I didn't enjoy it. It's traditional dance. It's conservative and 'meh' composition and 'meh' sampling; not pushing any envelopes.
Didn't get a good sense of contrast or feeling.

I'm sorry to say that this song didn't really strike me as too good. The synths are way detuned and not vibrant, and mix has little harmony whatsoever, many instruments clash in some places.
I was a bit surprised, as the source tune just sounds great by itself, I didn't think you could make a remix that squanders that potential. It may be that this genre just doesn't fit with a tune heavily reliant on harmony like the source. But actually I've heard the one from Project Majestic Mix, and it's pretty good.

Hmm, this is a hard one. I play FF sooooooo freakin much and i loved this song. When i saw it here i was like yes... yes... yes yes YES ! Then I listened to it and I was like Yes!!!!.... no .. no NOOOOOOO ! Im sorry, I just don't like it. It was way way way too much high pitched for my liking, and some things were way way way out of tune. Until... It got to the ending. And i was happy. until it got to the very ending, and then (you guessed it) I said no once more. I like the remixer, just not the song. I ASK YOU! SOMEONE! MAKE ANOTHER REMIX OF THIS SONG! IT NEEDS A GOOD REMIX!

Oh man... I was hoping for such great things... But I was utterly disappointed... I really like the original song, and this remix lets me down. It sounds kinda like he took the midi, erased some of it, and added in a cheezy house beat behind it.
My rating?
Original Song (The Man With a Machine Gun; Laguna's Battle Theme from FFVIII): 9/10
Remix (Man With Another Trance Machine): 1.75/10

I don't agree fully with some of the other comments here--no, it's not my favorite remix on the site, but it is decent. Definatly deserving of at least 5/10. However, you can't listen to it in excess, and compared to the other MWAMG remix on here, this one pales. It's good to see the right idea though... a little more bass and focus and this could come together a lot more nicely.

Why would you mess with a perfect song? Who ever did this butchered it. Way to go.

This has got to be one of the worst remixes ever. I don't mean to be overly critical, but this mix does no justice to the original. In fact, it only uses like one riff over and over again. He forgot the best part of the song when it switches gears and it goes to that part with metal sounds. To those who actually appreciate the original you know what part I'm referring to. Also, there is absolutely no substance to this song. It's just you average run of the mill rave song. If you are braindead then I could see you liking this song, but if your like me and listen to Aphex Twin or Meat Beat Manifesto, then you would really be excepting something more. Now I'm not saying that Beatdrop needs to become a pro, but anyone can pull one riff out of a song and add cheap thumping. This song probably took 10 minutes to make. Sorry, but to all those that gave this song 5/5 you need to go hang yourself.

The Man With the Machine Gun has always been one of my favorite FF8 songs, and this remix does it great justice. It rocks.
I GIVES IT 5 STARS *****

This is absolute crap...why anyone would listen to this over the original (or orchestrated!) version is beyond me. The remix sounds sooo empty, rushed, and incomplete. 1/10.
