Arranging the music of one song...
"You're Not Alone!"

Branching out a bit - almost any time I would even think of it, the "You Are Not Alone" theme from FF9 would stick in my head for days. There's only one good remedy for this, for me at least, and that's - you guessed it - some lovin' with a ReMix. In this instance, I felt the piece could potentially lend itself to a really fun offbeat-heavy reggae/dub feel, and since those are genres I don't have a lot of experience with, I decided to give it a shot. The result is far from loyal to the original or either genre, but takes the guts of the melody and combines it with some wah guitar offbeat chords, a monoglide sub-bass, a koto, a flute, several varieties of pads and fx, synths, organ, a violin-ish hybrid instrument, a wah clav, and my favorite part, some delayed kick+rimshot percussion work. This was all Motif, and was, like Pachelbel's Ganon, primarily a pet project that I just wanted to hear the results of 'cause the idea intrigued me and I found the melody irresistibly catchy. For some more accurate, techno coverage of this theme check out Orkybash's fairly recent techno rendition. I suppose I just enjoyed working on something that allowed for a bit more syncopation than usual with layered rhythms, and also dug piling on some generous helpings of effects. Unlike most dub I've heard, which is very rooted in repetition without too much structural variance, this doesn't repeat itself too much at all - the "chorus" only gets one appearance (though the "verse" is very similar to a chorus on this track). Wanted to keep it short so I - and hopefully you too - wouldn't get bored. Track name is a fairly nonsensical reference to Underworld for no particular reason. Sounds much better when played loud, on headphones, in either a sedated or inebriated (using your weapon of choice) state. Hope you dig.

I listened to this a little while ago, and I guess I was unsure then of whether I liked or not since I decided not to comment on it here. But upon listening to it again today, I LOVE it. I love the source track; it's one of my favorites from Nobuo Uematsu and djpretzel really shows off his talent here.

I wish I had his boldness to take on a genre that I don't have a lot of experience in, and make it sound awesome. Nice work

I really like what was done to the melody in this one, and some of the samples are a little dated (lead violin specifically), but overall it really holds up well. Some of the new rhythms are really well-utilized, and when I think of "ReMix", this is more often than not what I like to hear, though this one might get a little too liberal in some spots, it's definitely a great song. Good stuff.

Yeah, this was an awesome mix back in the day, plus it completely holds up now.
I was surprised to see the date. It's rock solid. I especially like that little thing done with the violin (and later guitar), that "stuttering attack" thing. Things like that make sampled instruments go a mile longer than when played "as is". Heck, of course they're good on real recorded takes too. This is a fine track in all the other respects as well (and yeah, I'm reminded of Monkey Island too), but that's a great detail!

Yeah, this was an awesome mix back in the day, plus it completely holds up now. It's a drastically different take on the original that I enjoy for its sheer interpretiveness. It's got a great groove and really unique textures. I do wish the track had a bit more overt melodic focus, but that's only because I think it would appeal to others more that way. I personally love it as is. Looking at when it was posted (October 2002), I get nostalgic about including this one back on my radio show, even before it became VG Frequency. Really well-polished, this was indicative of OCR's quality and professional quality as well, even if it was less consistent at the time.

djpretzel for president.
This is an awesome remix. When I first heard it, I was made a reaction similar to "ubuuhh?" This mix is very different. Like I think "You Are Not Alone", I don't think awesome reggae dub etc. You used a lot of big words in your write up that I'm not familiar with. I don't know the first thing about remixing and synthesizers and Frooty looops and whatnot, but I do know a good remix when I hear one.

yet another case of love at first sight. I love the Bob Marley-esque backbeat.

Unexpected Awesomeness. I'm currently listening to it as much as possible to see if it is indeed possible to get tired of it.
It is not. This was one of the first mixes I dl'd (about 2 years ago) and I think it's still one of the very best.

Dude, is this your first try at reggae? I don´t know how reggae is going to sound, but this is awesome, so I don´t care. VERY funky, I liked that organ/synth/bagpipe that played the melody, and the bass, DUDE, this is all just a great proof why pretzeldude has the legal rights to own this site. Hyper Kudos for making such a masterpiece, the name is hard to remember though.
And I know where I remember this musicstyle from some game, but which?
I am cursed by Monkey Island, because that's what all reggae-ish music sounds like to me now.
THAT´S IT!

Holy shit, I never knew DJP did a You are Not Alone remix. Anyway, this is much more awesome than I could have expected, and my expectations were pretty high for this when I heard about it. I enjoy it immensely.

I love this track, you wouldn't believe how many times I've played it. The style's great. It just doesn't get old. I especially like the spiralling-down bit at 1:24 (that returns later on in the song)
