Arranging the music of one song...

Primary Game: IronSword: Wizards & Warriors II (Acclaim , 1989, NES), music by David WisePosted 2002-11-08, evaluated by the judges panel
Ain't nothing wrong with having your own sound, and Ryan8bit's guitar timbres have become welcome & identifiable characters in and of themselves recently here at OCR. Ironsword aka Wizards & Warriors 2 was my actual introduction to the series, having bought a NES a little late to have gotten in on the first installment's action (went back after playing this sequel though) - I have fond memories of being driven absolutely insane after jumping from platform to platform for what seemed like a vertical climb of ten miles and then falling all . . . the way . . . back down. BUT at least I had good tunes to wallow in failure and frustration in, ne? Ryan brings back the memories with crunchy guitars, heavy acoustic drums with a nice metallic snare, some interesting ambient effects that sound like . . . gurgling water and someone choking? Beats me, but it works musically. Pace is deliberate and sways back and forth with momentum. Truth be told, for some reason this sort of has a pirate feel to it to me, so it reminds me of Ryan's own SoMI ReMix a bit. Guitars are doubled up again, resulting in nice call-and-answer and harmony bits. Judges had some minor issues with recording quality, so if you must have pristine, crystal-clear mixage this might not float your boat, but I actually think that lends a little charm / authenticity (in moderation, as it is here). If you liked Ryan's other mixes, this one's a sure bet, and if you haven't checked 'em out yet, this is as good a place to start as any. Recommended.

Would have liked a cleaner sound to this for sure, especially towards the second half when things got boomier. That said, loads of personality with this rendition of the title theme. Great energy here, something Ryan's always delivered.

I absolutely love this style, whether it was an artistic decision or a result of lack of resources, knowledge or interest is irrelevant. The important thing is the raw grit to the sound of this mix gives bucketloads of character and identity to this theme. Ryan8bit has a few earlier mixes like this, and while his later mixes ARE superior mixes, I think I like these severely unpolished pieces moreso. To me this sounds exposed and more concentrated musically. I guess you could say I like this mix more for what it doesn't do than what it does.
I'm also a big fan of the sample/vocal work thrown in here. Very understated but extremely well placed.
In all, a very unconventional piece, but one I listen to a lot. Even if I do feel like a tetanus shot after extensive listening.

Vintage Ryan8bit. This is before his tone got really good, and his production improved where it could really show it off. This is pretty muddy when everything is playing at once, but the arrangement is nice. I dig the slowdown and the general concept.
A little too rough for me to really get into, but it's cool to see stuff from way back in the day. Seems to me that back then Ryan was singlehandedly holding down the OCR rock fort, waiting for the rest of us rock remixers to get it together and start making more tracks.

AMAZING adaptation! This title piece NEEDED a remix in this style!
The guitar DOES lag a little bit. I can hear it have trouble keeping up around the middle.
BUT. Overall, I almost cried to hear one of my favorite themes done in real instruments!!!

I just downloaded this song again after reformatting my hard drive and i gotta say: it's still as sweet. Waiting for Ryans next (master)piece.

This song is genius. I only wish there were many more like it here. I think that this genre is so underrepresented on the board for the quality of some of the mixes such as this. We need more Wiley Metals, Ironsword Foundry, and Time Punks!!!

Doesn't this sound like a Kefka mix? I was introduced to it by Mortisland's new movie, and I thought it was... Freaky.

hmm. interesting remix. kick ass remix, actually. Yep, its loud, its raw, ...its the way rock/metal is supposed to sound
Some remixers just go into their own original artistic world and use a few minutes of ear-fucking static *cough*Silent Hill 2 StaticAversion*cough* and then finally get to the cool part. However, in this remix, it gets straight to the point. The sound effects are pretty cool too, like that boiling cauldron...and before the main attraction, that wizard laugh or whatever it is comes in, and what I love most is the heavy and loud guitars. Its nice to hear a good ol' straight-foward heavy remix. Good job, dude.

This is one of those pieces where it really has to be your sort of genre for you to actually enjoy it and not just "like" or "dislike" it. I'm somewhere between enjoyment and liking it. The raw sound was great, and as far as its type of music, orchestrated really well. Ryan8bit did a fantastic job on this remix. I think the raw sound gets grounded well at the beginning and end. What I mean by that is that it doesn't just suddenly come at you and it doesn't suddenly just drop off. As great a remix as someone can make, if it ends (ends more than begins) on a bad note, then it takes away quite a bit from the rest of the song. Definately, well done.
