Arranging the music of one song...
"Swimming BGM"
Primary Game: Super Mario Bros. 3 (Nintendo , 1988, NES), music by Koji KondoPosted 2002-12-03, evaluated by the judges panel
Cool! Honestly, I hear a ReMixer name like "analoq" and I'm expecting some form of techno, but this is far from it, surprising, and very cool. Parts of it actually remind me of some of the incidental music from Miyazaki films, in a good way. Newcomer analoq lends a classical ear to Super Mario Bros. 3, with a liberal, narrative interpretation of the original. Though a good portion of this arrangement is lighter, piano-driven fare with bells and flute, the beginning and ending are bombastic, soaring fanfares, with snare, timpani, church bells, (somewhat weak) trumpet, and mucho gusto. I like it - a little risky, certainly imaginative, and not your usual arrangement. Like a certain Mario 64 ReMix, also of water music, it takes a theme and reworks it into a more ornate, orchestral affair. Seemed a little center-right heavy with mixing at louder bits, but otherwise on the money with a clear, crisp sound. Non-sequitir, fresh stuff from analoq - check it out.

Cool! This is an interesting ReMix. I must admit that I was never high on the SMB3 underwater theme, but this grand take on it makes me rethink that. The bells section was great and I enjoyed the nice use of the instruments for this. Encore, analoq!

By moving from majestic to tranquil and back again, the feel of aquacadence seems to conjure up imagery of a pirate ship setting sail, then underwater, then the ship again. 1:15 - 1:42 sounds like the sweetest lullaby a mother can sing to her child; it brings tears to my eyes. (The flute shares its love so beautifully with the bells.) 2:30 - 2:54 doesn't carry the same purity, playing in a slightly higher octave, although it doesn't sound out of place. Then when the drums thunder forth and crescendos hit anew, it's like dolphins have leapt out of the water, leading the ship to glory.

I've confessed my sins, what is my penance?
Sub another great mix. I'm sure you have some awesome arrangement ideas left in the tank.

After my first submission to OCR was form-letter rejected, I felt as though I had something to prove. So I watched the Judges Decisions threads closely and observed the panel (in my opinion at the time) was easily swooned by orchestral arrangements... need I explain more?
That's very Compyfox of you.

If one listened to all my remixes they would notice this one standing out as a stylistic anomaly. There is a reason for this and it's not a reason I'm proud of.

There are some clever things going on musically here, so I don't regard it as merely superficial pandering or an exercise in "beating the system". But I do hold contempt for the sort of vapid "Hollywood" orchestral sound that crops up in this mix, which is why I never revisited this style. Plus, I still haven't invested in decent orchestral samples
cheers.

Sorry, my SMB3 days were filled with the game sound turned off and Iron Maiden cranked up. I'm doing all of these reviews as penance. :darkesword:

Classy stuff- I don't recognize the source at all, but I am loving what I am hearing. Some of the humanization is a little mechanical, but the flow and tone of the mix is wonderful.Awesome track, it makes me want to check out the source and see how far this arrangement took things.

What a great expansion on an overlooked gem. It channels Super Mario Galaxy's epic orchestral approach, even though it predates it by about 5 years. I also got a Donkey Kong 64 vibe in some places. Take that as an insult or compliment, but I for one think it's nothing to be ashamed of.
When those big moments happen, it never sounds like a REAL orchestra, now that I'm spoiled with choice from Mario Galaxy and other authentic orchestral game music arrangements, but it hardly detracts from what this is. Like an oak from an acorn, this is a big mix grown from small beginnings. It's very easy to see why this was such a big deal when it hit OCR all those years ago, and how analoq got to where he is today.

I really love the piano section that takes up the middle of the piece--I think that by itself could have been expanded and made a great arrangement on its own.

Wow.
I can't think of anything that hasn't already been said. It's amazing how a fun little NES tune can be transformed into an grand orchestral number.
I love orchestral mixes, and this is now definitely among my favorites (along with stuff like "Pilot the Yggdrasil" and Rise of the Star's "Dreams of Valor").
