ReMix:Bahamut Lagoon "Dragons of Paradise" 3:38

Arranging the music of one song...
"Jojo and God Dragons"
Primary Game: Bahamut Lagoon (Square , 1996, SNES), music by Noriko MatsuedaPosted 2003-02-07, evaluated by the judges panel
PxFury sends us his latest work, our first arrangement from the SNES RPG Bahamut Lagoon. Besides being fairly strangely named, Bahamut Lagoon was a Squaresoft title that didn't see release outside Japan, though it's been translated by some very talented guys and a patch is available. It's not widely regarded as having a great or even good soundtrack by most Squaresoft buffs, but you might not pick that up from PxFury's mix, which combines trance and rock elements well. There's still not too conspicuous or memorable a melody present - PxFury would have needed to dig pretty deep to make that happen - but the ReMixer has capitalized on what was there with some nice acoustic drums, spacious reverbed synths and deep analog bass, and a delicate, delayed piano. There's also a variety of ambient & synth effects thrown in for ornamentation, and several tempo changes help elaborate upon the minimal melodic structure of the original. More than anything, my comment about the original melody would be that it sounds like a really long, extended intro that - instead of breaking into the actual song - turns out to be the actual song. PxFury has done good, solid work to help address this, and this is where I think the tempo changes, though at times seemingly contrived, were probably needed. If you're not getting my drift, essentially I think Px did a great job with the mix, but it's not an original I would have singled out for special attention, nor could any amount of interpretation outside of the truly "poetic" (read: very loose) change my evaluation. The original's not awful by any means, it just doesn't stand out to me as a song, and feels more like an interlude or as I mentioned, intro. Judges didn't seem to have any of same feedback, so do take that with a grain of salt. Otherwise, like them I'm digging the overall production - the mix is spacious and crystal-clear, instruments well-defined, and DSP applied varyingly and certainly liberally. I like the acoustic kit used and the whirly-bird synth effect on the ending especially. For me, this is a good ReMix of an average original. More often than not those adjectives are reversed, so in a way it's refreshing, but draw your own conclusions and give it a listen.

Although it's a flying track, I could definitely imagine it used for some underwater exploring, ala Ecco. It's calm yet urgent. Inspiring throughout with little breaks from that feeling (eg. 1:40-1:46) and even the breaks just seem intended to push us up again.
Flying? Swimming? Either way, it's cool.

I can just barely track the melodic similarities between the staccato intro here and the source's equivalent (the Jojo part of Jojo and the God Dragons) - what a devious changeup to the notational placement. There's even a smidge of choir in there, if you listen closely. The faster sections catch me off-guard (the 2nd one moreso) if I focus on those cross-panned square waves (?) that precede them (yes, they do resemble the "dropping a key down a well" sound in FF4). 1:39+ takes on a pensive air thanks to the addition of the bass synth. It's easier to focus on the drums here because they're not as buried, and I can appreciate the 2:02 flourish.
Very skybound.

This mix has a nice atmosphere, i liked a lot of the synth choices, and the piano cut pretty well. Interesting of how an ambient track can get kindof rocked out a little, and there's no melody to speak of, but it makes decent background music. I'm inclined to agree with DJP that it's a poor choice for a song to remix, but it was well done at least.

I was digging the song when it sped up the several times it did. I felt that the introduction was drawn out too long with the same beat and could have had some variation to make it go down easier before the climax portions.
Other than that, the beat was still pretty awesome. I just have a natural bias against introductions that last for 40+ seconds without getting anywhere unless the song is really long.

The song creates a good atmosphere, though that's about all it does. From the sounds of it, that's the fault of the source, so lack of melody/direction probably stems from that. Reguardless, I liked this one, and will eventually play the game, someday...

ive never played this game, and im reviewing it as a point to convey how the song affects me.
The vibe feels like im about to play Dead or alive on a Beach level of some sort. Its got a really cool vibe, and i especially love the sound effects. Some pretty neat time changes too. The greatest aspect of this song though is its euphoric value. I definitely feel like ive been taken somewhere else, like the world of some anime or something. (Sorry for the vagueness) but definitely appreciating this song. good work.

Solid remix of a pretty deep song. Like the varying tempo.
If I ever find the time I will have to remix the final boss remix (which is also part of the intro)...now THAT was amazing

For me, the highlight of the song is the fluctuation in tempo throughout the theme. The first time I listened to this song, I remember being kind of thrown off guard by the 1:11-1:16 point. However, I understand its artistic purpose. Great job with bringing the song through its various highs and lows.

PxFury may be an asshole, but he has some impressive skills. Even the shitty judge fgts liked this one.
qwert out of qwerty.

I love solid piano, and this is great. The tempo changes keep it interesting, I want to play the game now, it intrigues me.

Cool remix!
I don't like that added instrument/sound or whatever at 1:40 to 2:22 which in my opinion ruins the remix at that part but overall impression is very positive. It sounds new.
This remix deserves place in my favorites.

Like others said, New Age-ish without much of a visible melody. All depends on whether you like the style or not. There may be a few minor flaws in it, but it's not bad as a whole.
Worth listening to at least once or twice to form your own opinion of it.

Okay, I guess I'm one of them people who like it.
I'm not a critic or anything, I just enjoy listening to music, and I think this is one of my favorites.
Maybe I don't have the musicians ear, but I really don't see what the issues people have, but thats just me I guess.
Makes me want to go play the game again Its really a good game, shame it didn't get 'officially' released over here.
Its not a perfect song by any means, and I could think of a few things that could be changed, even with me not being a musician at all, but I still think its worth listening too....
Personally, I think if your getting so caught up in the little flaws or ways a song could be improved... you need to take a few steps back and just learn to enjoy music again...

Funny, I guess this is just the sort of music that some people love and some people... don't. Well, I loved it; I think it sounds great and I really enjoyed listening to it
