ReMix:Ultima Online "Create Your Fantasy" 4:50

Arranging the music of one song...

"Creation"

Primary Game: Ultima Online (Electronic Arts , 1997, WIN), music by Hal Milton, Joe Basquez, Kirk Winterrowd

Posted 2003-03-01, evaluated by the judges panel

Judges were definitely unanimous in one thing about this mix - mucho reverb. It's kinda like that commercial for 'Total' cereal, where it takes ten bowls of 'Special K' to equal the amount of fiber in 'Total', or something such. Well, it takes ten ReMixes to equal the amount of reverb in 'Create Your Fantasy' - maybe GLL could use the same sort of advertising campaign :) In all fairness, as a couple judges noted, this is stylistic and inherent to the trance genre, so it's not too much of a problem. Perhaps it could have been scaled back a bit, tho. Regardless, I think most will enjoy Ghetto Lee Lewis's newest submission, some lengthy and overall well-crafted trance from Ultima Online. The coolest thing here is that this mix definitely grows & develops - though as judges noted certain portions do repeat, the second half features strong choral pads and different synth timbres from the first, and is thus distinct & distinguishable. In particular, the harder-edged synth around 3'30" are good stuff, a cut above just relying on yet more detuned meat-and-potato trance synth. Outside of overuse of reverb and maybe a bit too much detuning on the initial synth melody, in fact, this is really a good trance benchmark track, definitely above-average and featuring a second-half that doesn't just repeat the first with minor additions & subtractions but changes the game a bit more. I don't think anyone looking for Ultima Online trance would be disappointed, that's for dern sure, and as an arrangement it has its ups and downs but stands pretty strong on its own two feet in the end. If you already know you dig trance, this is likely to be one that you'll listen to quite often, as it's effective within its context. Strong.

Hard to get a trance track like this drastically wrong once you've locked down the staple elements of any good trance productions. I think where this one got slightly unstuck with some people is that the reverb (of which there is a heavy amount of) takes away from the traditional clarity of trance. Not being a big afficianado of the genre myself, it didn't bother me at all.

There's not a whole lot distingushing this from the rest of the pack however. It's not as punchy as I'd like, and there isn't as much of a marriage between the folk origins of the source material and the melodic trance. It doesn't manage to break through the clouds, yet it does manage to entertain while it lasts, which will suffice.

It's a song played in a completely empty marble hall! Somehow it works though, and i'm groovin to it. Nice builds and some creative sounds used. I also certainly wouldn't think trance while playing Ultima Online, but it fits the genre, and I think the arrangement is great. I do wish at least a few elements would be further forward, but I'd guess that 6 years after the fact, it won't be happening anytime soon. ;-)

Good stuff. :-)

Cool. A dance mix, I haven't ran across one of them yet.

Interesting. It isn't as quite as energetic as my preconceptions of dance mixes want me to believe but it's still cool.

This is great stuff and a must download.

I personally like the reverb. It's only slightly too heavy. One of my favorite things to do is to re-listen to tracks I've already heard after turning my Audigy's reverb on, but I can't really do that with this one.

However when my playlist randomly shuffled to this I was pleasantly surprised. One of my favorite melodies from Ultima that I haven't heard in over 10 years. I guess they re-used it in Ultima Online.

Very smooth and creative. I think maybe the reverb could've been toned down a bit on the piano in particular, but everything else sounds just fine.

This is a great ReMix, hands down, just great.

Thanks. It was just not working for me last week for some reason but I have it now. Very cool mix of that tune which was always one of my fav's from the Ultima series.

When you left click the download button it should take you to a page with three more links. If those links don't work you can right click save target as (if you're using Internet Explorer). If you're still having trouble I can try and send it to you via instant messanger (I can't send attachments over 1 mb in hotmail). Otherwise I'll have to find some free webspace to upload to and send you a link.

I hope you enjoy the remix.

I have not been able to download or listen to it, When I go to the page with the song listed, http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00937 I do not find an actual clickable link for it. What am I doing wrong?

I'd really like to hear it since I was one of the Ultima Online composers.

Thanks

This has to be one of my favorite trance remixes on this site so far. It is more innovative than most "techno" remixes here. I'm pretty tired of downloading songs that have been labeled trance and finding happy horsedoodoo. This mix succeeds in taking me to another place, which to me is pretty much the point of trance music. GLL is making great strides towards becoming a quality trance producer.

I listened to this the other day while lifted and indeed i was taken "elsewhere".

I look forward to more mixes of this creative quality, no more 'techno' mixes that are basically a 4 to the floor kick and cheeseball synth playing a disgustingly happy melody (most good trance honestly is minor keys i think). Interestingly enough the other song on this site that i admire the beefy lead synth is also an Ultima remix, its the "gates of Creation" mix by potshot. The lead on this remix also is so thick and beautiful. Although probably unintended..the heavy reverb adds alot when layered behind it. On my system at home it makes for some great listening. It is probably a bit much to alot of people, I dont use that much personally, but i think on this song it doesnt hurt it at all. No...I wouldnt change much.

The other thing I like is that the song progresses alot more than your previous works, and also much more than other 'genre' music. In fact i would liken this more to psy or goa in that sense...anyway...to wrap up..um...

Great Mix! 9 out of 10.

GLL's remixes sound so good and clear. They sound so professional. I keep all of his work on my winamp playlist. Its definately some music that can't be touched.

Hey GLL, Great stuff here. I'm keeping this on my OCRFav's playlist and never letting it go. Sorry about the whole reverb thing but that's just your style of trance, and everyone has their own thing. Personally, I don't think it's that bad. Of course, it sounds different on different speakers so maybe some of us can't realize it.

Hey GLL, I rarely post reviews, and usually don't d/l music from games that I haven't played, but I've loved all your stuff so far and thought I'd give this one a chance. I was definitely not disapointed.

The only criticsm I can think of is that some of elements in the begining sound like they're a little distant and possibly drowned out by the kinda ambient background part...I don't know jack about music so sorry if that's reverb-related. I think it might just be a volume issue.

Anyway, other than that very minor issue I think this is a great mix that really keeps things changing and interesting beyond the standard elements of trance. You have a really distinctive style that I happen to love. I still listen to Link Goes Clubbing almost daily...that kinda meandering lead is incredible, I'm not quite sure how to describe it. So anyway, great job on the UO mix, and keep up the great work, I haven't been disappointed by anything you've come out with.
