Arranging the music of one song...
"Stardust Speedway "G"mix (JP)"
Primary Game: Sonic CD (Sega , 1993, SCD), music by David Young, Mark Crew, Masafumi Ogata, Naofumi Hataya, Spencer NilsenPosted 2003-03-07, evaluated by djpretzel
Man, I love a good bassline. And from the very first nanosecond of Gecko's latest ReMix, from Sonic CD, he's got one going on. Love the mix title too - this has indeed got a groovalicious vibe that John Travolta could concievably have gotten down to way back in the decade of bad hair and cool pants. There's some interesting panning decisions going on here I'm not too sure about - bass and drums seem a little left-heavy, in particular - but there's some cross-pan delay on a nice synth that widens out the field. We've also got a cool distorted bass synth later on that ends out the track and is killa, some good if not jaw-droppingly realistic saxophone bits, piano, and a very nasal, retro synth lead that pans around a bit and is backed up by some respectable brass. I could dig the retro-factor on this lead - others may not. There's some good snare roll-ins on the drums that help w/ transitions. Biggest hangup I have is the panning, though, as on my headphones everything sounds like it heavily favors the left. Politically, I'm rather okay with that, but sonically it might be too biased :) There are some Beatles tracks I can think of that have bass and drums polarized, so it's not without precedent, it just bugged me a little in this disco/techno context. Other than that, a fun, concise number from Gecko that does achieve a feeling of a night out on the town, cruising under the street lights, like in one of 'dem crazee Mitsubishi ads where the music be playin' and the girl in the passenger seat be movin' her arms around all funny n' stuff. Right - groovy, mellow work from GY.

Oh my, that was beautiful. I loved the brass work especially. Sax, right?

Ah, this takes me back. I love all of Gecko's mixes. And yes, you NEED to play this while cruising on a summer Saturday night. It just works.
I agree with this one.

This one plays it pretty safe arrangement-wise, but that bass groove is really hard to deny. Just when it's getting going though, it ends.
Easily loopable though, so listen a few times.

This is so mellow, almost ethereal.
It's extremely hard to not like this mix.
This mix is highly recommended if you're stressed and need something to listen to in order to chill out for a while.

Basically almost exactly the same as the original.
Don't HATE this, it sounds great. However, the music for the Zones in Sonic CD are all basically variations on one melody. There's a "re-mix" for the past and future ALREADY, so there's only really so much you can re-mix, unless you can REALLY get creative...
Other than that, I really like it.

This is swelltastic. It took its time to get itself going with that chiming synth, so I got glad when a trippy piano suddenly started to spread its magic. And the sax, it sounds strangely for real, and the bass that later comes into the picture really adds some more funky style to this arrangement.
I really liked this remix, it had a wide selection of samples and instruments, and everything ran smoothly. No complaints, at all. I give this one two thumbs and two toes up, everyone should give this a listen.
Edit: Oh, and Sweden rocks.

Where are my techno-geek clothes and flashing lights?! This song matches them perfectly. Its got a great beat. As opposed to your other remix on these, "Stardust Beat", This tries various beats as opposed to a few. It worked. Now if only i could decide which one i like more...

Heh, I remember having this song on my old Hard Drive... ah, yes... I played it every Saturday... Anyways, good job remixing my favorite Sonic Zone (all time periods, both US and Japan). The beat was good, and I liked the "Ahhhhhh..."ing (or whatever that was). Keep this up!

I can't stop listening to this great remix... I love the intro sound, and how it comes back near the end of the song at 2:12, but it always seems like this song ends a little too soon. It's so great, though, and I'm always putting it on again, again, and again. Sweet (but short) mix; I give it a 9.5/10.

Oh baby that's smooth. I love this song. Nice work Gecko, I don't know why but I have to say your sonic covers are at least 5 times better than your other stuff. I live for those kind of creepy ambient loops you opened with... it's not the effect as much as the chords I can tell, but it's the effects paired with it that make it genius. 9.5/10

Really? How come the main themes sound the same then? O_o;; (BTW, there's a remix based on the American Present theme in progress in the WIP board ).
That's because in the Japanese version the timezone themes are remixes of each other.

Actually "Saturday Night Speedway" is based on the Good Future version, and "Stardust Beat" is based on the Past mix... but that's just what I think, anyway.
Now you need to do Bad Future and Present!
