ReMix:Chrono Trigger "The Incredible Singing Robot" 3:46

By Star Salzman

Arranging the music of one song...

"Robo's Theme"

Primary Game: Chrono Trigger (Square , 1995, SNES), music by Nobuo Uematsu, Noriko Matsueda, Yasunori Mitsuda

Superlative, and oh-so-creative, Star Salzman's latest ReMix is an 80's maximalist electro-pop arrangement of Robo's theme from Chrono Trigger, with original lyrics to boot. This is simply a great concept executed with talent and style, lending the sound of 80's acts like Bucks Fizz and Electric Light Orchestra to Mitsuda's work, with harmonizing, processed "robotic" vocals ala the Thompson Twins, in a semi-vocoded style. If you're not up on your 80's, think 'Digital Love' by Daft Punk. If you are up on your 80's, on the other hand, this might remind you of some of Jeff Lynne's work, particularly the score to the movie 'Electric Dreams' (an amusing bit of 80's nostalgia itself, in which a PC takes over its user's life+house after having a cold beverage spilt on it ^^) - this absolutely sounds like it's been transplanted from almost two decades ago, the suspension of disbelief is that effective. The lyrics are humorous but also work musically and contextually make perfect sense, adding yet more depth. More than being a rearrangement, like a certain other ReMix from Chrono Trigger, it creates its own world. Very polished, immaculately authentic genre work from Star, memorable to the extreme, and a huge windfall for fans of this type of track. If Jeff Lynne tried to turn Robo's theme into a fully developed song, with vocals, I wouldn't expect the result to be any better than this. Highly recommended.

I remember the first time I listened to this I thoroughly danced in my seat. That alone makes this a legacy mix for me. And it's no wonder...

Metal/tin-like percussion is punctuated by drawn-out cymbals/hi-hats - this fires up my imagination with lots of shiny, golden imagery (like Robo's figure :P). Fluffy air drums, rubbery punctuators, and 8-bit crunchiness only add to the contagious flood of energy. Best of all, that swishy/watery modulated voice is clear and expressive throughout.

Lyrics are a treat. Robo's vulnerability and uncertainty are expressed via "Please don't reprogram me / My memories and thoughts are all I have left; am I malfunctioning?" Love the hilarious "take that" with "Won't you pick me instead of that (F)rog?" And I can FEEL his selflessness and extent of accomplishments with "just look and see this forest I made for you" - I picture him spreading his robotic arms in a visual encompassment, in turn making me awestruck with his 400-year-long dedication. Whew.

The eponymous singing robot says his kind can be "for evil or good" - I say they're best at getting one's groove on. Rock on, R-66Y. Rock on.

I played Chrono Trigger for the first time last year, and Robo's theme is one of favorite parts of the soundtrack. This vocal remix does it great justice! It's very fun and catchy, and the beat makes you wanna dance. The singing on the verses reminds me a lot of Joy Electric :)

Incredible singing robot is incredible.

This remix is such a classic. Every time I hear it, I can't help but smile, and it fills me with much nostalgia both for the game and for the 80's ^_^ The lyrics are so perfect and the vocals are what makes the remix so memorable. I believe this remix embodies the spirit of what OC ReMix is all about, taking an existing VGM track and totally reinterpreting it in a way that honors the original, while expressing new ideas and much creativity from the remixer as well, creating an entirely unique piece.

Heard this years ago. I loved it then, and I loved it now. Great lyrics and sounds that make me think of time traveling robots, check.

How have I never heard this before? 8-O Star has proven himself time and time again to be a pure genius, so it almost makes me wonder why I haven't taken the time to listen to his whole remix catalog before.

This captures the essence of 80's pop with some appropriate vocal filtering that fits the concept of the song nicely :-P Star is a master of this kind of loud, punchy music that's full of a ton of intricacies that are impossible to fully comprehend on the first listen.

For, like, the 2 of you out there that haven't heard this yet, check it out! It's a really fun romp through a nice theme, what more can you ask for?

One of my favorites- the section at 2:15 is beautiful with that rocking arpeggio, and the rest is pretty solid too. The RMS is a bit high, but that just seems to be how Star rolls.

A great creative endeavor, and one Stars best.

I absolutely love this track. I'm not usually a fan of remixes that add lyrics, but these just work so well - from the words to the type of voice used, this IS Robo singing. Every time this pops up on my randomized playlist I can't help but smile and sing along. Very fun take on a great theme from the game. And I love how you worked in just a little bit of Robo's in-game "speaking" sound effect.

My first post :-P

I went through all the Chrono Trigger remixes not too long ago since my wife and I just finished the game. I came across this tune and loved it. It has a great beat and the lyrics fit the character. The melody is expressed really well too, both in the lyrical sections and instrumental sections. But, as I believe djpretzel said in his review, this mix has that sort of 80's new wave sound down pat and could, in my opinion, stand toe to toe with Mr. Roboto any day.

My only complaint is that, at least on my speakers, the lyrics don't seem loud enough compared to everything else and seem a bit drowned out

I listen to this on the train and its awesome

Oh Robo, you're totally IN the party, man. Er, robo. Robo-man. You know what I mean.

Lucca+Chrono+Robo = Fire Zone FTW

Oh wow. This is one of the earliest ReMixes I downloaded, and it's still a favorite. It makes me laugh, dance, and sing along at the same time, and now I can't even imagine hearing the source. The lyrics are great, and I love to randomly sing them because nobody else I know even knows what Chrono Trigger is, and it stumps them.

I made an account for the sole purpose of saying: "This track is awesome!"

Though I am made
of titanium
I still feel
human like you

Copper and tin
and 6 other twins
I left them and
came with you

I might not be blue
like my brothers, I know
But my gears will last
forever

I'm happy to be,
in your party,
aren't you?

Robots can be
for evil or good
Please don't reprogram me

My memories and thoughts
are all I have left
Am I malfunctioning?

In 23 Hundred A.D.
I was left to study the humans
Then you came along
and I played this song for you

R-66Y
That is my name, but
you can call me
anything

Just leave me here,
I'll tend to this place
I'm good at gardening

So Fiona and me, we planted the trees
and you went into the future
Just look and see, this forest I made
for you

[orchestral break]

Though I am made
of titanium
I still feel
human like you

Won't you pick me
instead of that frog?
I can do healing too!
