Newcomer Joshua Morse offers up a great, unique first submission with some contemporary jazz mixage from Final Fantasy 7. I usually check out newcomers' websites, when available, out of general curiosity, and in this case the URL provided, www.dashstudio.net, turned up a few surprises - seems Joshua is at the forefront of a group of artists that include some established OC ReMixers such as Dale North, and Judge/ReMixer Beatdrop, to name a couple. Obviously, a project/group worth checking out and keeping one's eye on, considering the combined talents involved. Regardless of familiar collaborators, this was my first time hearing Mr. Morse's work, which in this case is a very subtle, mellow, light jazz that goes down smooth and easy but has some nice nuances that make it warrant closer listening. Introing with delayed arpeggios (in something by Uematsu? No way! ^^) but underlying that with a tasteful chord progression, funky swing-time drums come in along with a bouncy electric bass and electric piano solo. String pads then take over a couple bars, with the piano re-entering along with choral stabs that are rather innovative in this context and work well. Joshua then drops most of the drums out but keeps the hi-hat goin' and does some interesting timbral manipulations to it that really pull the ending, which is minimalist and sort of abrupt, together into something more cohesive. This piece is brief, but even if it doesn't tangent into more developed portions or display a lot of flamboyant accoutrements, it does illustrate some skills with jazz arranging and attention to detail as well, and (hopefully) hints at what's to come. Short but sweet initial mix from Joshua Morse - check it out.

This mix feels minimal and experimental as it drops a chord here, a riff there, a percussion loop elsewhere, gauging their effects both small and cumulative. Changing the time signature from 3/4 to 4/4 seems to make the environment more inviting. The synth playing the arpeggios in the beginning is so plucky it could pass for a new sort of string-based instrument. I like to think the cloud-like pad at 0:34 symbolizes heaven and the bass at 0:51 represents earth, so when they combine at 1:27, a concrete visual scene emerges.
"Take a vacation," the mix says. It certainly practices what it preaches.

A bit hypnotic in it's chillness- those repeating 8ths at the beginning really calm me down, leading to a funky bassline and smoothed out chords supporting the melody. If I ever owned a boutique tea shop or something, I'd totally play this while people sipped tea and worked on their laptops.
The samples aren't as rich as some of Joshua's later mixes, but they get the job done just fine.
The mix is delicious and fragrant, just like the tea i would serve.

Crud, this sort of reminds me of something and I can't quite think of what.....
Still, this is modern, laid back, mellowy, jet setting, starlit, subdued, "hey, don't worry about it" kind of jazz.
Be warned, the only flaw is there's no ending; it just randomly stops .
I even re-downloaded it to make sure there wasn't any downloading error when I first obtained it.
Still, its good stuff and worth downloading.

I thought it would be strings...
Anyhow, it was calm, a little bit funky, groovy, jazzy, can´t really find the right thing to call it, but this mix was real chill.
OH, that´s it!

Joshua released a revised version of this mix a few days ago on VGMix. Check it out here, peeps. He takes a slightly different approach to the track, and you might like it. I preferred the original version here myself, but both versions are very laid back and relaxing. Chill with 'em.

Very mellow mix, It has the same sort of feel as the music in Phantasy Star Online. It might not change much in style as it proceeds, but I wouldn't mark it down on that. Overall I think its a good mix, and worth listening to, I like it.

Very interesting tune. It really makes you feel as if you're near the end of the game and just about ready to take on your foe. When things come to pass, and you know it all ends here.
Nice rendition of this song.

come on people, lets not start flaming in the reviews thread, lol
anyways, nice song here, not the traditional jazz, but it sounds jazzy to me. Maybe do something with more swing and some jazz progressions next time? I would love that!

Yeah dude, sorry to burst your bubble but this song is Jazz, whether you want to accept it or not. And even if for some retarded reason that it wasn't, EVERYONE else who posted replies thinks it is? So I'd just appreciate you learning what Jazz is before you mouth off about someone elses song k?
I told you that I like it, but I still don't think that it's jazz. I'm a jazz bassist, I play paying gigs in a number of combos, I'm a member of a high school band that wins jazz festivals all over the country.
I really don't want to start some sort of fight, I'm not mouthing off about anything. Your ReMix is professional and well-produced. I enjoyed listening to it, not as a jazz piece, but as a laid back and ambient theme.

For some reason I dont really like a lot of Jazz but this one is good in my books... I guess it could be my mom blasting it and i got tired of it, but anyway... Nicely done! I would recommend this, nice flow..

I like the choice instruments and progression here. Everything flows smoothly and the instruments are just at the right levels. Nice arrangement/chord progression you got going on there, it's quite addicting. I wish it was twice as long, as right when it seems to take off, the song ends. Anyways, I keep finding myself listening to this song, so good work!

this is really nice, though i'd like it more if it went anywhere.
plus i don't see the mystery as to which song this is ('reunion')... it's pretty faithful. a lot of new stuff, but it never deviates that much.
good song.
p.s. bits of this kinda remind me of bits of the music to 'elevator action returns'. ^_~

First song by Morse, first post by me. Seems like a good start!
I liked it! I think that of any game music, Final Fantasy series music lends itself best to the jazz idiom. All these wonderful 7th/9th chords fit so well under the arpeggio/scale -heavy melodies that Uematsu tends to write. What's more, your remix has a nice shape to it - loungy doesn't imply boring.
I have only two very minor gripes:
1) the woodblock-like percussion thing that starts at 1:00 or so seems too loud at certain parts when there are only soft chords going, like 1:30 or so. I think it would help to bring it down then the rest of the song gets quiet.
2) It's too short - I want more! It does loop nicely, though, so if that's what you were going for, then nevermind this gripe at all.
Best of luck with your remixing! I hope to hear more!
