ReMix:Final Fantasy VIII "Fantasy Rush" 2:34
By MarcstaR
Arranging the music of 2 songs...
"Ending Theme", "Liberi Fatali"
Primary Game: Final Fantasy VIII (Square , 1999, PS1), music by Nobuo UematsuPosted 2003-09-03, evaluated by the judges panel
I think I liked this a bit better than most of the judges panel; I admit that when I listened on speakers I had some of the same issues they did regarding sample quality, but it sounded much better on headphones. I try to listen to most mixes both ways, because in my opinion you really do come across the occassional piece that sounds better (or worse) on phones. Not dramatically enough to make it a totally different track, mind you, but enough to make a difference. Marc Star mixes layered, quick beats (nice hi-hat action, sometimes reminiscent of Shaft only sped up 40-50bpm ^^) with orchestral flavors and a jazzy bass and synth fusion lead in this short hybrid piece. I particularly like the transitions and breaks: drums play along with where the melody goes, and strings and brass augment and follow as well, creating some nice unity. Nice wee funky bass break around 1'40", and the addition of a respectable harp patch doing some triplets and concluding the piece with a single (thank you) iteration of the infamous prelude arpeggio works nicely. The dynamics on the hi-hat and strings come off well, even if the strings and in addition brass aren't the highest quality samples in the world. I think the length here works to the mixer's advantage; things keep changing up, there's variety on multiple levels, and you never feel like it retraces its quick, shuffling steps. Anyone familiar with the Toto portions of the soundtrack to Lynch's Dune might hear the similarity I did to the ending bit at 2'06", interval-wise. Brief but inspired stuff from Marc Star; I personally recommend headphones, but maybe that's just me. At any rate, this is a nice shorter mix that packs quite a few musical ideas into two and a half minutes, without seeming - as the title might have suggested - rushed. Groovy.

Wow, its been quite a while since I've heard this one - it popped up on the ReMix Roulette on the front page for me.
As for the mix, it doesn't seem to have aged terribly well. The bass sounds weak here, and the synth sounds plain. I feel like this could use some more instrumentation to help fill out the sound - in its current state, I think I would prefer the original.

Kit writing is pretty hot here, might be slightly loud, but no big deal. Loving your combination of orch/synths/beats (sounds familiar . Orch feels a step down in quality compared to some of the other samples, and also pushed back quite a bit further with longer verb. I would've liked to hear more presence on the orchestra personally, but I think it's still effective use of what probably aren't the greatest samples.
Nice leads here here; nice breakdown with the beats and bass around 1:30. Feels pretty short at 2:42, but not incomplete. Nonetheless, I'd still liked to have heard more .

The arrangement is pretty rockin' here, and some of the samples are old school and great, and some are old school and need some tweaking. I'm totally feeling the drum beats, and the drum samples work pretty well I think too. They aren't kick-your-face-in punchy, but they have a great character to them, and the hats are nice and crisp.
Diggin it.

It's the Ending Theme (starting at 10:01 of that) with some Liberi Fatali during some parts of the background. The sounds are a bit flimsy, and it does sound better on headphones, but this was a good example of a conservative yet personalized arrangement approach that stands apart from the original.

Quote me wrong, but I think this is a remix of Liberi Fatali.
That may well be the case, there are some tracks that has the same melody as LF too but with other instruments, but yeah, it´s Liberi Fatali alright, and the FFprelude at the end.
This mix is a tie for me. I like techno-orchestra very much, but it did not in some way have that feel of rush and balance. I´m not sure what I´m talking about, but I just think there were almost too much difference between the instruments. But then again, at 0:58 it´s real sweet, then continues a half minute later with the same but now with a electric guitar. It´s all good, but I can´t decide if I shall download it or not.

Tis indeed a Liberi Fatali remix. I really like it...Meaning...um...that I kinda peed my pants it was so good... But this remix is quite awesome. LF has always been one of my favorite pieces from Nobuo's repitoir. I think it is a very comfortable song to listen to. In short, it is LF, really good, need a different pair of pants, you rock.

From 0'27 to 0'57,
the lead really sounds like Chick Corea playing!
Bravo!

I really like this song. I also really like Marc Star's "CrossFire" and "RosettaRefrain". I guess I'm a Marc Star fan. Now that I think about it, he may be the only Remixer on this site with no submissions that I don't really like. Granted, there are only three right now, but I don't label too many songs from OCR as good keepers.
Keep up the ass-kicking work, Marc Star!

Just so you know, this is my first review, and probably one of the few I've ever do. This piece just amazed me, I saw the comments that it sounded SNES-y and it does and it's fricking awesome! I think the cool thing is that the instruments sound kinda simple, but the awesome content of the piece makes the simplistic sound awesome, so much is going on in the piece, and it just sounds great. Congratulations on an incredibly awesome piece and I'd love to hear more. The length is short, which is a bit bad because I really want more, but you definitely didn't drag out this piece like many people often do with their pieces, so that's good too. And hey, the short length really makes me (and I'm sure others) want more (uh I already said that) so that's cool too then. Thank you very much for posting this!

I liked the mix, it's prolly about what I caould do if I had the full version
of Fruity Loops... (expensive shizzles...I'm so poor...)
The thing that struck me was the ending. I liked that short prelude thing.
6.5/10 didn't stick to me, but nothing bad in the piece.

i like the track, but..... this remix left an awkward taste in my mouth. part of it is because its almost too straightforward. etc....
but kudos to your taste in music.

I guess I am crazy or something but I like it. It does feel very SNES like.

I hardly post on remix reviews because, well, to tell the truth I dont know much, at all, about remixing and such, so I honestly dont feel like i'm one to judge. And just to also point out ahead of time, Marc Star I have some of your other remixes and I really like them. But i'm gonna have to agree with some here and say that at points it does seem somewhat like this is out of an unnamed SNES game, which, technically, even on some levels isnt such a bad thing. I think that alot of SNES games out there had EXCELLENT music. So dont take that as a put down.
However, here's the part that I noticed the most, at 0:58, the part that alot of people here have REALLY liked, I noticed it sounds VERY similar to a song by an old 80's band, The Eurythmics, the song "Here Comes The Rain Again", they sound almost completely the same in my head (it's been along time since I heard that song) Anyway, just thought i'd give my two cents. I think its a good mix, and i'm definatly keeping it on my playlist.

I guess its one of those songs where....you really like it or you really hate it lol.
Like Marmite!
hmmm... yeah, I think it has that James Bond feel with its drum beat, which isn't a bad thing and making it longer must have been a possibility, as most of the great ones I know go for around five minutes.
And MarcStar, you're welcome for accepting our reviews.

Sup, Thanks for the support and criticism weither you liked it or hated it.
I personally like the drums on the track, they were the most fun part to program(no loops). I do see what you mean by the 16 bit feel tho. Ah well, I love to do this stuff so im gonna try to keep 'em coming.
