ReMix:EarthBound "Funky Bookas" 3:28
By Shadow
Arranging the music of one song...
"Bazaar"
Primary Game: EarthBound (Nintendo , 1994, SNES), music by Hirokazu Tanaka, Hiroshi Kanazu, Keiichi Suzuki, Toshiyuki UenoPosted 2003-12-24, evaluated by djpretzel
I've been waiting for Shadow's next mix, as I really felt his initial Earthbound arrangement was both original and very well done. This sophomore submission, also from Earthbound (or, as the Japanese like to say, "Mother 2") is also quite original and like its predecessor uses guitar timbres and a rock vibe, but whilst Bus! was more in a retro/surf 60's bent, this arrangement of the Scaraba music has a less aggressive beat, arabic underpinnings, and strong, conspicuous processing on the lead guitar that make it seem somewhat otherworldly. This might be the only OC ReMix to feature quadruplets, at least so extensively, so our plentiful triplet-laden arrangements have some company. Shadow's got a great ear for putting together mixes that fill up their space, sound very alive and immediate but also controlled and precise, and which achieve the acoustic/electric feel very viscerally. There's a strong slap bass, bright B3 organ on full vibe, offbeat guitar chords, and the afforementioned lead, which takes up a lot of sonic space with its processing. Everything blends perfectly, there's good variety, drums follow the arrangement and are a living presence, and there's a general energy to each and every element that gives it a certain life. Plus, you got them quadruplets, and with a mix title like "Funky Bookas", I don't really think any sane man or woman could pass this up. Recommended.

I can honestly say I was not a fan of the main electric guitar melody. Other than that,I give this remix a positive, well done vote.

samples are pretty lofi, but treated in a way to really work. I was enjoying the triplet feel on this, and though i am not incredibly well-versed in the earthbound soundtrack, I enjoyed this mix.
Nice work!

Kind of repeats too much at the end, along with having too little stuff going on at that time.
Other than that, at the 9 second mark it sounds so fucking pro it's not even funny. The main gist one can get out of this is great, though the ending kinda leaves it non-memorable. Kick it up for this one sticking on the hard drive, with basically 20% of all OCRs, of a random person you've never met (me)!
The guitar sound could end up being too grating on the ears, but the first half of the song is where it's at.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this track yet! It has always been on my playlists and CDs. The guitar is thrashy yet tasteful. I love it when the chord progression changes to major; it makes me uber happy.
A thumbs up from me

Excellent remix. The intro actually put me in mind of an ancient fisticuffs match (even though it is supposed to be a bazaar. The tune is catchy, and the piece flows well (I like the percussion at 2:39).
Also, it may be a little late, but...
Bad and did not truely getting away from "Dalamm." I can really hear it played mostly thru the whole "remix." Having an empty "Songs:" tells me that they did not want people to know which song they dressed up...3/10 from ME
Excuse me?
I'm not sure exactly what you're saying, but if you're trying to say that this is a remix of the music in Dalaam, it isn't. I'm not sure how you could mistake it for that when the original is on this very site. In the .rsn file, it's Scaraba.spc and not Dalaam.spc. The official title is "Bazaar" though. You hear the song when in the town area of Scaraba.
SHADOWNED!

You know, almost every single Earhtbound remix has been excellent? I want to thank all the artists for taking theie time with the soundtrack and giving it the attention it rightly deserves. As for this piece... wow.
First of all, great title. Thanks for that. The hearts of the fans go out to you. And, more importantly, great music! You've taken the original far from its roots, but kept something similar enough that it's instantly recognizable for what it is. I love at 1:20, when you go into a short riff, with the change in pace coming afterwards, introduced by heavy drums. Great way to end the piece as well. No suggestions here, just praise.

Hmm... Interesting.
I think I've had this from the WiP forums well over a year ago, and for some reason didn't like it then. Then it came on OCR a few months later, and I thought it was okay up until around the time that I started playing it again a few months ago - and liking it.
It may be because it's such a unique song, but just from rarely ever listening to it over about a year I realized what the mix was really like and fell in love with it. It's just awesome.
Apologies for being so first-impressionistic about this mix. Very good if you have the ear for this kind of stuff.

Shadow has more than earned my respect as an artist with this one. Despite the fact that 'Booka' means 'butt' in Romanian, despite the fact that I got killed in the Scaraba Desert time and again, I can say without doubt that this my favorite of all the OC Remixes I've heard.
As I've said time and again, I'm obsessed with Arabian or Egyptian sounding music. From PharoTeknical to Deep Damp Sandcastle, from Five Iron Frenzy's Fistful of Sand, to the band Ra, I'm simply in love with music that has that mysterious desert feel to it. This is a prime example of, as Lionaje calls it, the 'Pharo' subgenre.

The opening is absolutely awesome. I love the lead guitar, and I jam along air guitar to it, even though I haven't a clue as to how to play the guitar.
At most points in the song, it does sound scarabian, but at most times it's just happy and jumpy. I don't think alot about deserts when listening to this song. I sometimes imagine an arena when listening to the beginning, but it dissolves later into the song.
Very well done! The name kicks ass too! Funky Bookas!!!!

Good remix of the scaraba theme. I like the guitar. Good stuff.

Different from my usual favorites (full of synths).
This one's filled with guitars sounds.
The two parts (starting at 0:30) match very well together.
The layers are arranged to make the very simple chords not too repetive.
(please excuse my too bad english writing)
