Arranging the music of one song...
"B4U"
Primary Game: Dance Dance Revolution 4th Mix (Konami , 2001, ARC), music by Naoki MaedaPosted 2004-01-31, evaluated by the judges panel
Well, it had to happen sooner or later. Before I get into describing MC and SGX's DDR ReMix further, I'd like to clarify our policy regarding DDR mixes and similar music that blurs the line between game music and commercial music. Essentially, as long as the piece being ReMixed was made specifically for the game, it's all cool. In the case of most DDR tracks, the songs existed beforehand and were simply picked up by Konami for use in the series. We won't accept ReMixes of such tracks, as they aren't really game music as much as they are commercial or pre-existing music that happened to be used in a game. Same goes for popular movie themes like Star Wars or tracks by punk bands used in games like Tony Hawk, etc. In this case, however, the song in question was written specifically for DDR and is "within bounds" so to speak. Which is a good thing because, despite some faults, SGX (with MC's assistance) has crafted an enjoyable mix that fans of the series will dig. He even raps, albeit through distortion and to fairly kitschy, slightly modified lyrics (true to form for DDR), and there's some speak-and-spell style synthesized voices, too. I actually had a speak-and-spell when I was little. I was curious and tried to take it apart, busted it entirely, then hid it behind a heat pump in the basement as I thought I'd get in trouble. We sold that house well over a decade ago, but I'd imagine it's still there, neither speaking nor spelling... but I digress: things intro with some tell-tale MC piano stylings then the beat comes in at around 0'18" with some string stabs, followed by the eventual introduction of the vocal. The ReMixer writes:
"This is a remix of B4U be Naoki from DDR. MC did me a favor and busted out the little (awesome) piano intro, and the rest is my doing. I modified the original lyrics a bit because the original song is at an almost twice as fast tempo, so some lines did not have enough syllables to keep the flow going. This mix started as an entry for a BEERmix competition (the thought of me rapping was an extremely hilarious/horrible idea to me) , but ended up having way too much potential for a real mix, so I decided to actually put some effort into this. I'm glad I did. "
You do kinda have to laugh a bit when you hear "SuperGreenX won't make you frown!"... but even if some of the enthusiastic, self-congratulatory lyrics have some cheesiness to 'em, there's musicality and energy to their delivery. GrayLightning opines:
"I don't think this is SGX's most technically savy mix by any means. The rap work as others have noted is... well, he sounds like a white boy :) But this is really the case of the sum being greater than the individual parts. Despite some of the issues cited, it's one of the most enjoyable ones I've heard."
I think I probably enjoyed his Panzer and Ecco 2 mixes both better, but this has an undeniable "guilty pleasure" fun factor to it, which I'd imagine is somewhat amplified for truer fans and participants of the DDR world than I. Godd stuff, check it out.

"PLAY."
Every now and then, a ReMix comes along that has what I call an "OCR Moment", a nugget of brilliance that instantly hooks itself into the memory and lasts forever. 4F73R M3's opening is one such OCR Moment for me.
That Speak Spell commanding to "PLAY" and then MC does, and oh boy he does. He starts on that anacrusis to give energy and momentum and then plays that shimmering piano solo that just builds and builds and builds, opening the gates for SGX to slide in with a reverse cymbal and totally subvert it into that amazing bass and hi-hat groove, attacking strings and then response-and-call with a flutey lead. Wow. Just wow.
That is an OCR Moment.
And then the rapping in homage to the original B4U? And slowing down the tempo compared to the original to let the music breathe and give time to appreciate the melody? Genius. Just genius.
It's a pity that this is MC's last entry in the catalog, but what a ReMix to bow out on.

I have a bit of mixed feelings for this. The original has dancing ingrained into me so much that it feels like a travesty to be playing the song at this slower pace.
This remix does what a remix should do though, and so it's hard to say that it is "bad" because of that. It's just me, I guess; I can't enjoy it like I should because the pace is killing me.

I didn't frown while listening to this, so I guess that the advertising is legit. I think the string stabs are a little slow on the attack, but this is a really nice rendition to a theme I have spent countless quarters "dancing" to.
Beats sounded good, rapping was passable, and the synths were nice. The transition into the modulation was excellent, and I really dug that double triplet in the drums; it really caught my attention.
Nice work from an awesome mixer.

I have to admit I wasn't sure what to expect when listening to this, and I'm still not sure what to think other than I might like this. I had to go back and check against the source because I'm not to familiar with it, and wow... Seeing where it was versus seeing it now. I have to admit this track is highly impressive. This mix of strings and techno works so strangely together and yet works beautifully. To misquote Yahtzee, download and listen to this because you aren't going to find anything else like it.

A nice, fun, laid-back remix. This would actually make a good song on the next edition of DDR, lol. I don't have much else to say, other than it is very well done and a great salute to the song and game. Keep it up!

I just noticed the gong at the end of the song. I LOVE IT.
lol the gong... reminds me of Mortal Kombat... the beginning of that one song has the distorted gong... quite interesting

heh some things i liked in this song: the beginning, the middle, the end. some things i didnt like in this song: *thinks for a few days* ah, the drum beat.... later in the song after SGX says "JUMP JUMP JUMP DDR" theres a wierd little part in the drums.... the drums stop during the JJJDDR part, but then after that they do a little double-triplet-double thing... it just doesnt seem to fit in the song... oh well (sry, im a drummer... i gotta be the best i can be hehe) but hey... this song is still on my 'very strangely large list of extremely good songs' list.... all in all, just get the damn song.

Love the rapping SGX. I even love the distortion effects over-top of your voice. The techno effects and strings and beats really get the party going.
If only I could have reviewed this at VGmix, I would have given it Stuff of the Legends right there.
A Classic!
EDIT: I think it's the relation of the strings and the beats that hold this mix together. Good stuff.

My favorite song ever. No really, it is. I love this song. I've played it a million times, it never gets old. Oh yeah, and the rapping is well-placed, too. Absolutely no complaints about this song at all. Ahhh, what to say, what to say?
*insert awkward white person dance*
Yes, that says it all.

SGX is amaizing, and so is this song. Classic feel, good techno and/or dance should never be passed up. Not much left to say. 10/10

Not much to say that hasn't been said. I listen to this once a day usually now. Gotta get my fix of S-G-X-X-X-M-C. Awesome remix.

I really like this mix. The piano, electronic and otherwise, is well executed, and the rhyming, while a bit cheesy, draws me into the song well. I also though the simple text "S-G-X-X-X, M-C..." was a nice touch. Overall, fun to listen to, and generally cool. A good ReMix for a good song. Highly reccomended, especially for DDR fans.

I've got it all, don't stop me now
SuperGreenX won't make ya frown
Check my sounds, 'cuz you know they can't be dissed
There aren't too many that can flow like this
It's thumpin', jumpin' at you
And the rhythm is gonna get through
Do I need to say any more?
Tell me what you're feelin', yo, here I go
Jump, jump, jump, DDR
Yo, everybody feel the beat with DDR
Jam, jam, jam, DDR
Everybody dance, let's get down
S-G-X, X, X
MC
Everybody feel the beat, feel the beat
(Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go)
Every-every-everybody feel the beat
(Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go)
Get down!
S-G-X, X, X
(Everybody feel the beat
Get down!)
Everybody feel the beat, feel the beat
(Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go)
Every-every-everybody feel the beat
Could it be that you wanna be more like me
No shame, I brought my game, it's just me you please
Now I'm gonna punch this bad amount
Put your hands in the air, move 'em all around
Can you feel the beat down in your soul?
Don't fight the feeling, just let it go
SGX is bringin' it down
Wanna see you move when you hear my sound...
Jump, jump, jump, DDR
Yo, everybody feel the beat with DDR
Jam, jam, jam, DDR
Everybody dance, let's get down
...R! Jump, jump, jump, DDR
Yo, everybody feel the beat with DDR
Jam, jam, jam, DDR
Everybody dance, let's get down
