Arranging the music of one song...

"Theme"

Primary Game: Lost Patrol (Ocean , 1990, AMIGA), music by Chris Glaister

Posted 2004-07-16, evaluated by the judges panel

So, if you crossed Phil Collins, a Roland CR-78, an obscure Amiga game, and a talented Commodore ReMixer, you'd probably end up with something like this. Makke has mixed Lost Patrol's chocolate with Phil's peanut butter and come up with musical reese's pieces, an interesting vocal track that pays homage to the Amiga title and he of Sussudio fame simultaneously. Incidentally, "In the Air Tonight" is considered a bit of a landmark track for some of its more outlandish vocal processing but especially the combination of the VERY synthetic Roland CR-78 drum machine with a much beefier acoustic kit that comes in towards the end and rocks out. Great track; nice to see it assimilated here into a new creation that utilizes some of its structure and instrumentation. From their comments, it wasn't apparent that any of the judges were familiar with the Collins' track this is playing off of, but their opinions were nonetheless positive. Jesse sums up the relative weaknesses and strengths nicely:

"the vocals are campy, the song is on a grand total of 2 (two) chords, the bassline never changes. the production sounds good, the vocals are well recorded, and it doesn't get too repetitive because of a few interludes, some nice synthy sounding strings. very new-wave ballad."

Your familiarity with either half of the source material might prejudice you in one direction or the other, but Makke's certainly come up with something very different, and while that something doesn't work for 100% of the mix, the moments when it's especially effective are pretty cool. You don't have to have a great voice to make a vocal track work, as The Clash helped prove, and while Pavarotti won't have to quit his day job any time soon, the ReMixer does an admirable job of pulling off this innovative, highly conceptual, transporting mix.

Funny, some time ago I watched some Amiga longplay videos and was thinking the original tune was pretty good, it'd be fun to try to do something with it. I guess I didn't even think there was already a piece on OCR! This is indeed a pretty fun track. The bass comes off as a cheap old school MOD bass, not in an entirely positive way. That's about the only negative thing I'd say about the piece. Great idea to make it into a song.

Lovin' the Collins homage. Always a treat whenever Makke comes up on the playlist.

I'm not digging that bass sound at all, but man, those vocals are awesome. Pretty spot on, with both the tone and production. The song itself is pretty basic, but the vocals keep it interesting throughout.

I am really impressed with the attention to detail on mimicking the original sound. Sounds great. :-)

This mix got posted shortly before I joined the panel, and thus survived Lockdown for OCR01250. IMO, the arrangement wasn't significantly interpretive compared to the original Amiga MOD. But since it was already posted and had some substantive interpretation due to the original vocals and some structural changes, it wasn't enough of a violation to be considered.

Stepping away from all that, however, this one is still one of my favorite arrangements. The vocal homage to Phil Collins fused seamlessly with the Lost Patrol source tune, and is yet another example that shows off the depth of Marcus's skills when compared with the other songs in his career.

It's no shot against Mazedude (and honestly, it's apples and oranges), but especially for those familiar with Makke's works at Remix.Kwed.Org, AMIGAremix and C64Audio.com, Makke may arguably be the most heterogenously genre-talented musician in the scene.

Just saw this. I'll try to remember exactly how the lyrics goes...hmm...I think you were pretty close with your lyrics. :)

I can feel them coming in the dead of night

For a lost patrol too weakened to last through the fight

Bombs blazing, lighting up the sky

I can hear them closing in with every hour

On a lost patrol so weak all they can do is cower

Sniper gazing, deciding who's to die

As the end is drawing near

With the light of dawn

I shed a tear for those who've gone

I can see them firing at us from afar

A lost patrol who don't quite know where they are

As the end is drawing near

With the light of dawn

I shed a tear for those who've gone

Here's my best guess to lyrics. I love this song, and would really like to know if I'm anywhere close.

I can feel them coming in the dead of night

For a lost patrol too weakened to last through the fight

Armies blazing, lighting up the sky

I can hear them closing in the deadly hour

On a lost patrol so weak that they can't do a scour {I'm very confused about this line}

Sniper gazing, deciding who's to die

As the end is gone and (here)

With the light of dawn

I shed a tear for those who've gone.

I can see them firing at us from afar

A lost patrol who don't quite know where they are

As the end is gone and (here)

With the light of dawn

I shed a tear for those who've gone.

I'm not exactly sure about the "here" I put in parenthesis. It's something that rhymes with tear. Everything else I'm reasonably sure is correct. The bold is the deep voice, if you're wondering.

This mix has got something of a Duran Duran sound to it. Love it!

Sweet mix, I love when a new mix pops up on my playlist and makes me go...what the heck is that...hey that's pretty cool. And I proceed to crank the volume.

It sounds just like Phil Collins :P

I love it! it's out there funky, and balanced well. I think the bassline never changing makes it's really sound like an 80's song by Phil. if it was all over the place, or changed at ALL REALLY, IT WOULDn't be 80's :P

When I first heard it I was like "Phil Collins did an OCRemix?" Yeah it does sound like Phil Collins. Hehe, but it's also a lot Krazy Komets like. Good stuff.

Yea i remember Lost Patrol ..twas a fun game .

I especially liked those sniper missions 8)

This remix although its nice to the ear ,leaves much to be improved upon. Too repetitive and too similar to the original.
