Arranging the music of one song...

"Elec Man Stage"

Primary Game: Mega Man (Capcom , 1987, NES), music by Manami Matsumae

Posted 2005-09-05, evaluated by the judges panel

It's amazing, the little musical coincidences you come across - it seems that, when slowed down and played on solo piano, as it is in this collab ReMix from respective newcomers MaJIN_SaN, ambient, and tomatsu, the Elecman theme from the original Mega Man bears a striking resemblance to Journey's Faithfully - at least for a few bars. The similarity was substantial enough for me to initially think that Steve Perry had been intentionally paired up with Yuukichan's Papa, to produce a genetically frightening offspring, but upon comparison with the source material everything checked out. There are (far) worse bands and songs to (temporarily) resemble, to be sure, and the intro here does a great job of "80's piano balladizing" the source material, pairing ivory up with appropriate backing pads. The beat filter-fades in beginning at 0'42" with a sustained resolving chord, which drops out as bass drops in. Piano thankfully comes back in - it's not just an intro tactic, which might have made the arrangement feel a bit disjointed, but plays a role up to the two-minute mark, where there's a percusssive break and a stuttering saw synth lead comes in for some solo action and is then doubled up for some harmony. There've been some very negative reactions to previous submissions being rejected, which the panel endures, shrugs off, and moves on about their duties after reading, but this piece was definitely the real deal and received fairly unliateral appreciation from the justices. Perhaps the most positive, Andy writes:

"REALLY nice stuff here. This is a keeper. Overall production values are extremely strong, with crisp mastering and dynamics - rhythm section is tight and varied, levels are balanced well against each other, lots of variation in the instruments and synthwork so nothing gets stale. The real instruments like the piano and strings fit in very well with all the electronic elements, which is often a tough feat to pull off. Finally, effects processing and automation is done tastefully as well."

I'm honestly always going to hear Journey when I listen to this ReMix - but I *will* listen to it, it won't just be some half-decent techno Mega Man piece that somewhat resembled another song that I only vaguely recall. It's memorable, tightly constructed and produced, and takes a bubbly, robotic original and makes it a more mature, but still groovetastic, experience.

Reminds me of two other remixes: Remix Again! (here: http://www.sectionz.com/@player.asp?SZID=22906rType=mp3) by Aracia (formerly) on SectionZ.com and Another Soundscape's SSF2THDR end theme

Btw, download that first song here: http://sectionz.s3.amazonaws.com/mp3/Zelda_Remix_Again-Aracia.mp3

Electrolytics! It's what plants crave!

Nice piano and strings intro leading into some energetic beats, with some charged synths and light piano backing. This really feels like it got a good jolt to kick it forward, I really like this one. The bassline rocks, and it's really well put together.

Great work, this one is really enjoyable!

Doesn't this sound remarkably similar to the WoW themed song "I am Murloc" by L70 Elite Tauren Cheiftan? (Blizzard Entertainment) The chords are very similar and I can't help but think the lyrics in my head as this song plays. I know the similarity lies in the piece as well as the remix. Great remix btw :)

I always noticed this similarity, and was going to make a mix based on the idea myself. I wasn't planning on putting it on OCR, though.

Listening to it now, my idea was very different. I wanted to more or less just combine the two songs, and keep it a straight piano based song.

I'm a little upset listening to this now without Steve Perry :(

Quite angelic with the strings and piano at the beginning. Sounds like a soap opera. It doesn't seem to fit with the drums and the staccato bass blip. Plus, it's dance! The arpeggiation and filtering is pretty sweet on that slick double-synth halfway through. The drums need work. They seem kinda weak towards the end when everything is seeping together. And they don't work with the angelica. And what is that wind-sweep?

A piano/techno remix of elecman together with iceman?

Truly great work. The piano in the beginning sounds excellently wonderful that almost put a tear in my eye.

And the explosion of beats through the whole song is great. You guys should stick together, because this was an awesome remix.

I just wanted to say, awesome remix. One of the best Mega Man remixes I have heard ever. You really captured the essence of a Mega Man soundtrack, and just amplifies the original simple mix to make a great track. Congratulations.

I'll be the first to say that nothing could beat Injury's treatment of this same material, but this one comes pretty dangerously close -- from tearjerking sentimentallity to breakbeats and then a combination thereof -- just a "wow"-inducing mix all-around.

Splendidly done. Good to see someone is keeping the vibrant spirit of the MM remix alive!

hm..has a wonderful intro, absolutely beautiful. Levels are mastered very skillfully. i wonder why the piece dosent continue with that level of mastery. seems to weaken a bit as it goes on. at 2:12, have some harmony or something please. this is a perfect oppertunity to show off your musicianship and you blew it. sigh..

Yes! Oh man. I've heard Faithfully so many times and thought to myself, "Why does that sound so familiar?" It's so nice to have it pointed out, and in such an upbeat fashion. I think it might have been better, with a bit of the sounds from the game's song itself, nonetheless, it was pretty enjoyable.

I do admit it's not one of my favorites, since it sticks mostly to the matching parts of the songs only, however, which kind of bugs me a bit, but I like it anyhow. I don't get annoyed listening to it or anything.

I'm glad someone acknowledged that Elecman's Theme sounds like that one Journey song... in this way.

This is a good one, a steady mix of soft piano and techno/dance. All around, it's a keeper.

A-Good intro. The piano is not the one nice element here.

B-Good part 1. The piano is still there, with an excellent rythm section.

C-Good part2. The piano is gone, but the the rythm section makes me dance, now, and pump up the volume.

D-Good part3. The lead sound is OK.

E-short ending: alright!

A+B+C+D+E=nice work! This mix is entering my favorite collection. Thanks!
