So, tomorrow's Oscar night (although the often more entertaining and definitely more expletive-laden Independent Spirit Awards were today), and as always, I've got my favorites, though nothing this year is as important to me as Million Dollar Baby was last year. The recent buzz around Crash seems ill-placed - excellent film, very brave and honest... up until the last ten minutes, where it falls to cinematic pieces, complete with musical montage, "snow in L.A.!!1!", and amazingly-coincidental-connections contrivance theater. Brokeback seems more timeless and thus more likely to resonate with (open-minded) viewers decades from now, so I'll take it for Best Picture and Director (though Lee still has far more work ahead of him to make up for the green stink of Hulk). The Best Actor nominees continue to make the fairer sex pale in comparison - Hoffman, Ledger, and Phoenix (my favorite, but apparently a longshot) all gave amazing performances. For Actress, from what I've seen, I'll go with supposed lock Witherspoon, but I still need to catch Transamerica. I was "constantly" bored by Gardener, so I hope Williams brings in one more for BB and favorite Weisz is denied. Williams' Geisha score was a little schizophrenic, so I'll take the relative simplicity of Brokeback once again. Ditto with adapted screenplay; I'd like longshot The Squid and the Whale to take original though - Noah Baumbach's the shit.
Wait a second... this is a site about video game remixes and what not, and most people probably don't give a rat's tuckus what I think about this year's Oscar nominations. Ahh, well... damage done. Regardless of who wins what tomorrow, one of the most consistently amazing and increasingly prolific ReMixers of the last dozen months has been po! - along with co-conspirator Joshua Morse, he's been turning out some tight, inventive, hybrid electro-acoustic jams. This Mega Man 3 piece is no exception; to be frank, if you've enjoyed the last several mixes po's written or co-written, you shouldn't need any further convincing. po played guitar, bass, and violin for this take on the Gemini Man theme, and none of those three parts are particularly simple - he's a bonafide multi-instrumentalist, let there be no doubt. The violin solo at 1'42", where a funky clav panned right joins the EP, is definitely a highlight, and at 3'23" total, is the perfect way of rounding out the relatively brief mix and incorporating a new element to keep things fresh. The overall feel is a little warmer and funkier than past stuffs, but largely in a similar vein. Hopefully Mr. Yan will forgive my Oscar-tangent intro to his mix's writeup if I also add that his violin playing has really been bringing something different to the scene, and continues to add an ineffable quality to his already excellent compositions.

I love how smooth jazz makes some people think of the weather channel. Not that I'm disagreeing, cause that's what I think of when I hear songs in this style, but that's just funny to me. This ReMix is so incredibly smooth, certainly fitting of the name "crystal potion". Love that violin solo, and man, this ReMix makes me crave some warmer weather more than ever so I can chill out to this outside.

One of Po's best, and that is really saying something. Beautiful guitar and violin work, and though the beats are a bit vanilla, there is enough going on otherwise to keep things engaging for the duration. The ending was a bit abrupt, and I could image a few other superior ways to end things, but I certainly won't turn up my nose to this great track. I am a bit curious about the name though, as "crystal potion" basically sounds like a tailor made track name for a Final Fantasy game.

Scarily well arranged - every time I thought to myself I was craving something nice and simple, you put in those awesome chippy synths and choir pads! You have a nack for knowing how to time everything. This is a great piece; keep up the good work.

Who's the violinist in here? Damn.Beautiful remix. Only bone of contention I may have is the abrubt ending. Some sort of indication that the piece is about to end would have been nice... but other than that, great work.

Seriously though, I've been going through all your stuff, and man this just blew me away. It's not even fair how well you play violin, guitar, and who-knows-what-else, but ReMixes like this make me really glad you do. A keeper fo xo.

Could a mix get any smoother?
The star here is the violin work that milks out gobs of sweet sweet melodic interpretation.
Woah, listen to me. 'Gobs of'? Who am I, djpretzel? Hope he doesn't have a tradmark on that.

This is, like, groovy, techno, cocktail lounge, jet setting jazz.
Also, the violin work here is unimaginably good.

Quite honestly, I hated the G-man's theme.
You have got to be kidding me...just one of the great songs in one of the best NES games ever.
Not much of a jazz person and some stuff is more off-tune than it has to be...once you get into the violin stuff this becomes solid.

This song sounds incredibly professional, like a jazz song you'd hear on the radio or XM. I really like it, and it's an interesting touch to the original gemini man theme.
