"Well, I decided to submit this one in because it's my first non collab in a while, and it's a whole lot different from my usual stuff. I've been sequencing a lot of electronic music lately, and I've been forced to do a trance piece for high school which taught me a lot about how it's all put together. So I decided I'd make a FUN mix on one of my favourite sources, Kirby's Dreamland 2. Ah yes, you either love it or hate it, but I'm not of the latter.
The source song I mixed itself is pretty brainless (Big Forest), so I thought I'd add some jazzy progressions into it, to provide some variety whilst keeping the whole gameboyish chiptune feel. There's some guitar, piano, drum and bass, and a special surprise at the end. The concept is to entertain, and I think it should bring out the 10 year old in you, or that is you?"

Our first ReMix from Kirby's second foray into Dream Land comes courtesy Tepid, whose second non-collab mix is nothing to be lukewarm about. The ReMixer combines clean acoustic elements with decidedly chiptune kitsch, piling on the old skool breakbeats like Aunt Jemima on flapjacks, i.e. with the business. Jill writes:
"Wow, I am duly, dually impressed with your work here, Phil! The accoustic/piano sections were stronger than I've ever heard from you before, and then I didn't know you had this whole other crazy side to you. The melody usage is rather conservative, but you've done so many creative things with the instrumentation, and lots of jazzy flair as well. It's cool, and then it's super dooper uber happy, and then it's cool again, and then super dooper uber happy, and finally cool again. Yes, how Kirby indeed!
The section starting at 1:07 was a little weak at first, in my opinion. Instead of bringing out the breakbeats, they sound a little distant in comparison with the rather overbearing piano. I'm gonna have to agree with Larry that the percussion sounds kinda like a default, but I'll let it slide. Nice pitch bend at 3:10, followed by the cute little squeaks. What a mischievous little puff of pink; you've really captured his personality!"
So, apparently Kirby is a small, pink manic depressive who oscillates between chipper and sedate, potentially in the need of emotionally stabilizing pharmaceuticals. Nintendo, what will you think of next... It's an interesting mix that floats in and out of chiptuneland without losing momentum or seeming arbitrary. Tepid definitely shows a different side of his game, as well, which is always nice to see. Pretty cool concept, nicely executed as well - it's always touching when breakbeats find good homes with parents that love them and raise them as their own, and Tepid's taken the adoption option and run with it rather adeptly.

Soft, then wacky. Yep, a break beat forest indeed. Good to have that good old Kirby energy working for the track. Very impressive work, and the slow down parts to the piano and Co. were very welcomed for variety sake.

In capturing the essence of what makes Kirby music Kirby music, this gets top marks. In also adding a whole new, reflective dimension to Kirby music, this becomes a pretty remarkable mix for sure. A lot of people seem to nail the Kirby formula: just overload layer upon layer with chippy, upbeat sounds and double speed it. But this also chooses to slow down some portions, plant some emotion within the folds and make something super pleasant. It offers spades of energy, and plenty of cool-off. In that sense, it is really rewarding to listen to.
Drum work is hard to notice for being too far back, but wow, I'm rendered not to care when the rest of the mix is this fun and delightful. This is some very well conceived Kirby chaos, with a touch of emotion to round it all up.

This was great, it shows how much your style has evolved and how versatile your skillset is. I really liked the introduction, though the ending felt overly drawn out (maybe that's part of the "cumshot" meme that I'm not getting here )
Not my favorite Tepid mix but it certain treads new waters with a lot of style and skill!

First off, I have to say, djpretzel's blurb about this one just about made me fall out of my seat laughing.
Anyway, the mix itself is awesome, it's like a crazy ride through the wild world of Kirby and by the time it's over, you're just sitting there trying to recover...it's great.

I really dig the beginning, you definitely show some musical talent with the opening. Following up on the beginning with such a transition is quite a marvel, and I say you did the best you could. I really am a big fan of the scaled arppegios. Definitely an ear fo music, unlike some other remixes I've seen. Nice one!

Could I get you to do a full remix with the feel of the intro? No? Oh well. The whole thing is great but the intro could be a song on its own. Love it.
I was just thinking that myself.
I, also, have issue with the drums, only because I think they should sound less muted. I'm a drum whore, though.

I WANT to like this, it's sonically AMAZING (did you sue Plugsound?), it's just it's also a tad too crowded and theres too many ideas going on in the song. Itnever strikes me as a coherent arrangement when I hear it. I still sort of like it though, maybe it just needs to grow on me.
I agree with the former poster that you need to make a version that is completely laid-back liek the intro, I'd also like to hear one that is just the chiptune and the breaks.
Overall, 3/5. ***
Oh and another thing, while I agree the drums are too quiet, why the hell does anyone care if it's a loop? IT'S THE FREAKING AMEN, THE STAPLE OF DNB AND BREAKS! OF COURSE IT'S GOING TO BE A LOOP OR CHOPPED LOOP!
Sometimes I think OCRemix is too geargasm-centric for it's own good...

I don't know. It wasn't immediately appealing, but it started to grow on me by the third transition. The transitions were fun, but they could have flowed better, but that may have ruined the original intention (???).
Right, the piano was great. I really really liked it, but the drums and some of the synth stuff wasn't quite a good. Maybe you just have to be in the mood, but it didn't turn me on.
The arppegio moving synth in the fast part was the real highlight for me. It made me smile, and added a ton of energy to the piece.
Overall, I need to listen to it a few more times before throwing it on my play list, but good stuff.
