ReMix:Sonic the Hedgehog "Still in Your Marble Zone" 3:12

Arranging the music of one song...

"Marble Zone"

Primary Game: Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega , 1991, GEN), music by Masato Nakamura

Posted 2007-05-21, evaluated by the judges panel

Gonna start this one off with a judge quote, for a change. Jesse writes:

"Allright, Frank my man! Back at the top of your game. Classy and sexy. Rocking not one, not two, but three different keyboard instruments (acoustic & electric pianos, and B3) and to great effect. This track is immediately recognizable as a Diggi Dis track, and there's very little to complain about aside from the abrupt ending."

Actually, those zany judges found one other thing to complain about, namely the piano's sometimes over-quantized feel, but like Mr. Taub says, this is classy stuff, a great multi-instrumentalist interpretation of a great theme. As a partisan to my own take on the source material, I might note that while this may have three different keyboard instruments, it completely lacks a shamisen, which I think we can all agree is the key ingredient in the ultimate Marble Zone ReMix recipe. Nevertheless, at least two others have proven the worth of shamisenless Marble masterpieces, and now Diggi Dis joins their esteemed ranks. The vibe as Jesse points is classic Diggi, with smoothness and instrumentalist emphasis and a good, solid beat and flow. I'm used to hearing hi-hats to the left of bass and kick/snare, so some of the panning decisions here strike me as odd, but there's no denying the performances are delicious and the arrangement both crafted and crafty in its subtle genre shifts. We've been very busy lately working on formalizing a content policy for the site, which will include a submission agreement and terms of use and is thus a topic that requires a good deal of discussion and revision, but I wanted to get this one up here since it's been awhile. With any luck we'll be able to complete and enact said policy sooner rather than later and get back to a more punctual and less punctuated posting pattern, but in the meantime you can dig dis Diggi Dis hedgehog action aplenty. Groovy material.

At first, I was very wary of this mix and where it was going. It starts off very note-faithful and, for my tastes, doesn't show enough interpretation soon enough. Thankfully, it does blossom into some extremely funky jazz renditions on the theme, and introduces new instruments in a steady pace. But for such a short mix, I really think this spends too much time establishing the main melody, of which most people are pretty familiar with anyway.

Save for that, things are sublime in all aspects. Production is sharp, samples are punchy, and when the arrangement guns are firing on all cylinders, things are golden. This is just what the Marble Zone theme needed.

ahhh :-)

Sometime's it's just the simple things, ya know?

The piano intro was brilliant and building off of that was genius. Very silky slick and not complicated.

Though I could say the drums are a little forced and they overshadow the piano in the latter have, it ultimately doesn't detract from the mix. Awesome work.

ohhhhh

Super suave and refined, great changes and some really nice comping. The soundscape is always changing but staying cohesive, and each section features something new, along with something familiar, and a slightly different take on the melody each time.

I could listen to this all day; awesome work, good sir.

I felt like putting on a nice suit, and black tennis shoes and gavanting about the town! That was nice, sexy, elegant, and still groovy. I live.

I'm a big fan of this song. It's my fave of the Marble Zone remixes. I love how it starts with a simple piano of the original theme, and builds from there. I adore the arrangement and the instrumentation. It's definitely one of my faves!

Very nice remix.

Its jazzy style reminds me of some of the songs done by po!/Joshua Morse and Red Tailed Fox. Among all the electronica, rock and orchestral remixes, songs like this one always stand out in a very positive way; I wish there'd be more of this stuff.

The two things I really like about this one are the drums and the organ, as the latter adds a lot to the piece's atmosphere.

Nice work.

I wasn't expecting to comment on this, as I don't really comment on that many songs, but I loved it so much that I got up from my homework to come back and write just how great it is. It's not overdone, not too divergent from the original, nor is it too flashy. It feels like a great, fun version of the original song, and I don't know how long it's been since I heard something this great. It reminds me of djp's older mixes--and I mean that in the good stylistic way, not that the mix sounds old, which it certainly doesn't.

I'm sure, in time, This will get as many comments as the other Marble Zone mixes as its very deserving of it. The constant driving beat, especially when the guitar is playing the tune, is almost hypnotising.

I was excited to see both Marble Zone and Diggi Dis in one mix, and it didn't disappoint either set of expectations. More where this came from, please!

What an awesome intro and great arrangement as a whole. This is what OCR is all about, taking something that is ordinary or over done and making it extraordinary or restoring it to its former glory.

Excellent work.
