Unfortunate mix title? You bet. Unfortunate mix? Not by a long shot... AeroZ delivers on the promise his initial ReMix showed, and then some, with this mashup arrangement of FF5 and Zelda 3. Sebastian writes:
"Well... I don't know where I got the idea from in the first place. Was just playing around with the "Dark World" chords and had just been listening to some FF5 tracks and I just went: "Wait a minute... what if.." and the result is this."
I heartily embrace the accidental arrangement methodology - a goodly percentage of my own stuff was birthed in the kiln of what I'd call "messing around"... although, given the quality of what Mr. Freij came up with, he might have deliberated a bit more on the title. Whatever... this mix probably should have bypassed the judges panel, if the brief and overwhelmingly positive votes were any indication. Jill writes:
"Wow, very interesting arrangement! The two themes mesh quite well the way you present them here, and the ending kicks major ass. I like this mix even better than Too Hot for Heatman. Your production skills have noticeably improved since then. Getting the chiptune style to sound fresh and cutting edge can't be an easy task, but you have officially joined the Mazedude/Shnabubula ranks in that respect. I'd be interested in hearing some more organic percussion in your next track– a little mixture of old and new– but that's just a side comment. Definitely doesn't take away from what you've created here. Awesome, awesome."
Jon T, of Jiggin fame, adds:
"This is great. Great sequencing, plenty of rhythmic/harmonic/melodic witticisms, all delivered with slick production. Very impressive. If the length of these 4 votes is any indication, this shouldn't be on the panel in the first place."
Personally, I think we could combine this mix title and Jon's handle and come up with an equally compelling hybrid: "Jiggin Jon Butz"... destined for greatness. Whether you like dark or light meat, you'll probably dig Sebastian's Butz; he's put a lot of work into making the chiptunish synth textures come alive, employing ample pitch bend, LFO, variable verb, chopping, and other tricked-out processing to great effect. Percussion is laced with comparably mangled retro FX but has a modern, hip-hoppish back beat, and all of this works well with the peculiar but catchy minor/major chromaticism of the compositional mashup. Very brief ending, not a lot of fanfare, just a quick turntablish synth effect and cut out, but when the whole thing's laced with the type of detail and creative interpolation that this piece is, perhaps exiting quickly and definitively is the best approach. I really think Jill hit the mark with the comparison to Chris and Sam; the piece has similar sonic characteristics to the subtle mangling that Mazedude employs, and to a lesser extent favors some unusual intonations of the variety Sam often wields. Sebastian's definitely his own man, though, and the end result is something that creatively blends themes that few would have thought to enjoin, does so in well-conceived + executed fashion, and as previously stated is a wonderful follow-up to his first mix. While "Ebony Posteriors" or "Midnight Fannies" might have been more clever, anyway you cut it, you can't afford to miss Butz.

I'm surprised I haven't written a review for this one! These early chip-style tunes from AeroZ were a big influence for me when starting to write my own OC ReMix candidates. I love their mysterious mood and their playfulness.

Some quality intricate chiptune and glitchy electronica work in this one. I can follow it for the most part, and it stays interesting to say the least. I'm cool with the ending because of how the rest of the mix was presented. Not bad.

Nice use of chiptune, everything cuts through and sounds in its place. I like when things get a bit chaotic at 1:13, adds a nice touch of darkness. 2:25, the percussion adds a lot of color to the more simplistic melodic stuff, sounds neat. Nice twisted work!

Right out of the gate, this has very similar instrumentation to your first. Cool sound with the chip tune synths. Progression follows a similar feel to your first mix: a track that is driven by a chiptune synth and pumping drums. The breakdown is a nice dynamic shift. The dissonance is a good touch as well. While I do like the chiptune sound, I would love to hear another, non chiptune synth in there, but that's personal preference. Ending was a little abrupt but not a deal breaker at all!

Very intriguing mixing going on in there. Pretty creepy with a side of 8-bit-ness. I like!

THE KING!!! of Sweden!!
This is a pretty sweet mix that combines a nice chiptune sound with some powerful percussion. A great benefit of chiptunes is that it's very easy to get a nice separated sound between the elements, so you can really pack in the counterpoint without things sounding too busy, and Sebastian has a ton going on at once. Thankfully, the track keeps it's focus throughout, and there are always new sounds and textures coming around.
The ending is a bit abrupt, but it works in the context, and while this isn't my favorite AeroZ track, it is very strong and well worth the download. Check it out!

Hi all,
Nice mix. Not exactly my style but really well put together. The beats were really bugging me because I was sure I'd heard them somewhere before and then I figured it out - Linkin Park's "Cure for the Itch".
Perhaps I'm going mad as the songs sound nothing alike but hey - it's a good track!
cheers,
p.

I like chiptune-ish stuff, and this song is no exception.
Really diggin' the drums in this one, especially in the breakdown starting at appr. 1:52. Almost sounds like a heartbeat.
Also, the melodies are woven into each other very nicely.
All in all, this is a very good mash-up. Nice work.

Very clever song AeroZ - I love the synth work at 1:12. Very catchy transition. I hope you make more songs like this.

I actually saved this directly to my hard drive before even listening to it, by pure virtue of it being a Final Fantasy V mix (I rarely save mixes btw, period). And I was not disappointed. I also happen to be a big fan of mashup-style mixes (as evidenced by "Koopa vs. Kefka" ), so this was a bit of a treat for me. I am slightly disappointed AeroZ didn't use the second half of the theme, but what's there is awesome as is. The ending didn't bother me at all, seemed like a fitting full-circle reference to the intro of the mix.
Excellent work, hope to hear more.

This mix is pretty awesome; I dig AeroZ first posted mix a lot more but this is still fun. Never realized how similar the two songs were until now.
Also, AeroZ stuff reminds me more of an old mixer, DUN DUN DUN... AE, more than Mazedude or Shnabubula ("With the Quickness" in particular). But, then again, maybe I'm crazy.

Hmmm this was an interesting mix. At first the Chiptune-ish aspect of it was a turn off, which was surprising since I am a huge fan of Mazedude and Shnab... But eventually this grew on me.
Honestly though I consider this to be more of a Zelda remix, just because I really didn't hear too many references to the FF5 piece. It was a good mesh of the two, but for me I was definately feeling the Zelda-ness of it more.
