Arranging the music of 3 songs...
"Going Up", "Sewer Surfin' (Stage 3 BGM)", "Turtle Swing (Stage 1 BGM)"
Primary Game: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time (Konami , 1992, SNES), music by Harumi Ueko, Kazuhiko Uehara, Mutsuhiko IzumiPosted 2007-06-05, evaluated by the judges panel
With a name like "Turd Surfers", it HAS to be good... right? I suppose, once butthole surfing got hot, fecal output wasn't far behind... at least this appears to have been the case for newcomer Marcellis Wentz, alias "chumble spuzz", who gives us this lighthearted, in-game sample-laden, tortoise rockin' arrangement from the fearsome foursome's most compelling video game adventure, imho. Fortunately the title describes the envisioned activity of said quartet and not the music itself, which segues playfully around, has a rather kickin' guitar solo towards the end, and isn't lacking at all in the energy department. Mr. Wentz writes:
"Finally. I can't even remember when I started this mix, but I'm finally at a point where I can call it done. I've always enjoyed the TMNT soundtracks, ever since the overworld theme from the first NES game, but this one stands out to me for some reason. Maybe because it's a bonus stage with tons of pizza in it. Maybe it's the "my toes!" reaction when one steps on a mine. I dunno. Suffice to say, this has been a long time coming."
As a side note to some of you youngsters out there, I was personally ensconced in the first, original wave of turtlemania, and did in fact wait in line - with my DAD - a couple hours to meet whichever four local actors they were paying to wear those goofy suits from the live action film that week, for an autograph. I think the turtlelphile in me died, however, when some sorry bastard decided it would be a good idea to incorporate Vanilla Ice into the second film. I was eleven at the time, and even I knew better. For shame. None of that crass, cross-market opportunism washed off on any of the games, however, or for that matter their soundtracks. I agree with spuzz that these games had some great tunes, and his appreciation of the theme shines through, as bgc notes:
"Well, right off the bat, this has some great energy, and in the spirit of "Sewerage" pretty darn fun to listen to. Just by the sound, I can guess that you probably had a lot of fun making this tune (I hope so anyway). Very TMNTish indeed. I'll admit the synthetic guitar bugged me a wee bit, but not to any substantial degree. I especially enjoyed the funky shuffle switch-up at :51. Solo at 2:06 showed good sequencing and definitely did a great job keeping the energy flowing. Drumwork was solid throughout. Haha, and then ending, with the cross-panned dialogue was amusing. I really think this is a great example of mix personalization. Though the theme isn't all that different from what the source conveys, there's plenty of expansion upon the original."
Pretty much; it's not wildishly adaptive, and I say that's my biggest beef, but what's added is good, and the usage of samples - particularly at the end - is consistent with both the tone of the arrangement of TMNT in general. At least, the games and initial cartoon; Eastman + Laird's original graphic novels were actually pretty dark... less cowabunga and more bloodshed. But the happier-go-luckier, pizzacentric incarnation that most know and love would love surfing turds that sounded this good, and you should too... just wash your hands afterwards.

The voice samples give me such a nostalgia trip of this game. The guitar riffs and the switch in tracks in the first minute was sweet! Nice solo as well.

I can't...
stop giggling...
at scatological humor....
Putting that aside, this mix just feels oh so right. It's totally got that radical 80's synth going on here and got a good flow going on here. The vocal samples really add personal touches to the mix.
Ultimately though, it doesn't really make that much of an impression on me, but I still recommend checking it out.

My brother did a drum cover of this song...apparently he was trying to decide between this one, zircon's Monstrous Turtles, and my Devastation's Doorway. Ah well, I'll work on him a bit to do the other two also.
It seems that your brother and I have similar tastes, lawl. Well, if those three songs are some of his favorites, at least.
There were some parts where the added in drumming sounded a tad awkward, but other than that it was pretty badass. I approve, yo.

This remix makes me nostalgic for the old early 90s TMNT cartoon =) And it also makes me want pizza.

Oh man oh man! I TOTALLY forgot about this mix. Somebody PUNCH ME IN THE FACE, because this mix deserves to never be forgotten. EVER. It's so energetic! Don't let the title turn you away from this mix!
Why are you still reading this? DOWNLOAD IT IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY.

"Amazing!"
"Astonishing!"
"Not bad."
Sums it up since an electronica/rock genre-mash mix is quite rare here. I enjoyed how the ingame samples were used especially at the transition between "Pizza time!" and the last portion of the song.

O man! This is one of the best ocremixes i have ever heard! I love the ninja turtles and this is one of the few songs that does the 'turtles in time' justice. Thanks Chumble Spuzz!

Glad to see that this one made it on OCR. I have been downloading every single version since the WIP thread was started, and it got better and better.
However, there is one thing that irks me about the final version. This song has an incredibly high level of energy, except for the part between 1:10 and 1:29. In the last version I downloaded (the loud one, hehe), this part was better, not least because of more in-game samples. Generally, I'm not really fond of voice samples in remixes, however, seeing as how I am an absolute Turtles in Time fanboy, I really love 'em in this one.
Still, this is a great song, and in my opinion the best thing to come from OCR in months. I won't delete the WIP, though.

Oh wow, flashback! I remember when I got this game, while being a short game, the music and game play was top notch. Great mix.

This is a great ReMix! It combines old and new elements to give the theme a fresh sound, and the splicing of game quotes was genius!
Keep up the great work! ThanX!

Yay!!! What a mix! There are not enough words of praise I can possibly attribute to this! Reminds me so much of a 70s rock opera. So peppy and unabashedly... happy! If this remix doesn't firmly plant a grin on your face, then you must have acid flowing through your veins!

Oh shit, I was gonna offer to record all the guitars live for this song... I guess I just forgot about it
THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU USE MSN MESSENGER, chumble spuzz!
Congrats on a terrific arrangement, dude!
I can't say I respect his ability to choose user names, but I can respect Chumble's ability to make music. I can't find anything wrong with this mix.10/10
