ReMix:Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars "Last Night a DJ Kidnapped Mallow" 4:20
By Skrypnyk
Arranging the music of one song...
"Sad Song"
Primary Game: Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (Nintendo , 1996, SNES), music by Yoko ShimomuraPosted 2007-12-05, evaluated by the judges panel
Skrypnyk writes:
"This originally started out as a tribute/experiment to Kid Koala and his style, and then I started getting inspiration from DJ Shadow and Boards of Canada inspiration (with a dash whatever the hell I do.) Originally started working on it last year (or early this year), then forgot about it, then finished it."
I'm only really familiar with Endtroducing..., but I definitely hear the DJ Shadow influence, and this piece compares really favorably imo. Andrew resubbed this based on judge feedback with a new title and melodic changes. Mr. Aversa says:
"I'm always impressed by Skrypnyk's drum programming skills - while his work on "Back 2 Skala" is fantastic, the programming here is absolutely top-notch. The main groove is killer, but all the detailed fills, record scratches, and effects make it truly a standout. Production overall is ace, too. Combine all that with a highly interpretive (but not too liberal!) arrangement and you've got an awesome remix. Good job Skryp."
The ReMixer does an excellent job channeling his stated inspirations, and the melody REALLY works well, stylistically - it has a maudlin melancholy that feels simultaneously futuristic and antiquated, hypnotizing at length and then breaking out with an unexpected scratch or cut. Makes me wanna check out Kid Koala, as I'm definitely a fan of downtempo grooves that still manage to sound edgy and slightly... disturbing. The arrangement here is definitely liberal, but remains identifiable. Shariq says:
"Rather groovy and cerebral. I love that smooth Rhodes and the contrast with the percussion. Very tricky stuff. Science lesson voice clips are always fun. Fantastic drum programming."
Speaking of science lessons, and the cerebral, I've been reading On Intelligence lately, and it's a fascinating read, definitely recommended. Great stuff from Mr. Skrypnyk; what his surname lacks in traditional vowels, his music makes up for in a broad palate of musical colors that are striking and enveloping.

Those glitched drums are delicious. Wish there was more of this style on ocremix.

Well, maybe this track isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoyed it for sure. The glitched heavy percussion blended with some cool scratches, voice samples and original cool melody certainly make this a weird yet good song. Nice job!

It's an odd piece to me, but certainly not a bad one. The drum beat and scratches working alongside the piano sounded good and the samples were done in a way that they seemed to aid the ReMix, rather than just appear and possibly hinder it, which is definitely a plus. Nice work.

Nice mix, I like how the melody fits with the (well-sequenced) percussion.

I don't know what all the random monologues and television samples have to do with the source tune, but they're used tastefully and effectively. Fantastic drum programming. Very moody arrangement; especially enjoyable on a rainy day

The 10 notes at 0:13-0:17 and elsewhere remind me of the first level of Nitemare 3D; hearing that in a mix with an eerie sadness to it just kinda fits. Rapid swivels and scratches love to flip, twist, and undress the percussion in every direction without disturbing the creamy Rhodes lead. At 1:50+, the bells feel like they're trying to compete for attention in the full sound field; however, at 2:14, they foster a clear, pure segue into the next section. And what a ghostly midriff with the square wave-like bass and static playing over the barely audible voice. Needless to say, the many voice clips a-a-a-a-a-and chopping up of (3:05 lol) are a guilty pleasure. Closing out the mix with a lullaby-like iteration is the icing on the cake made entirely of frosting.

It's been awhile since I listened to anything OC-remix, and this was the first thing I ended up listening too. So freakin' sweet.

Can't believe I haven't commented on this yet.
It's one of my favorite mixes on the site I'm pretty sure, and it also prompted me to listen to Endtroducing, which is a good thing.
Skrypnyk, you are becoming one of my favorite remixers on the site.

I always liked this one but kinda felt uncomfortable with how structurally similar this is to Building up Steam with a Grain of Salt.
-Opens with irrelevant quote
-Music starts (piano for dj shadow, synths/rhodes/whatever for skrypnyk)
-turntable crap, then over the music a self-referential quote is played
-slowly building drumloops with methodical melody, interspersed with neato drumwork and more random samples.
If anything it is a stylistic simplification because it doesn't begin introducing more sonic textures like dj shadow does.
I'm not claiming this is anything resembling plagiarism, but you could walk up to a random skilled electronic musician in the street, ask him to create a stylistically and structurally identical song to Building up Steam with a Grain of Salt, then replace the primary melody with sad song, you'd get this. If this was a generic rock or trance tune, this wouldn't really mean much, but the style and structure of this really define the song.

The lead instrument is just perfect.
Goes right through the spine.
Melody that begins at 1.22. So damn good.
This is a lovely track when you work at a industry.
Thanks for making it. Awesome track.

"Mainly look at breats."
Halleluja, Duckman.
F*ckin' kickass cuts in this thing, Skrypnyk. Welcome to OCR, dude. Loved your tracks with OverCoat on Garden Art, too.

At first, I wasn't really enjoying it, but after some few more listens I found it to be quite playable.
Good job.
