ReMix:Super Metroid "Mother Brain Suite" 3:48
By Beckett007
Arranging the music of 3 songs...
"Mother Brain", "Opening (Destroyed Science Academy Research Station)", "Theme of SUPER METROID"
Primary Game: Super Metroid (Nintendo , 1994, SNES), music by Kenji Yamamoto (I), Minako HamanoPosted 2008-01-22, evaluated by djpretzel
Mr. Douglas writes:
"Like my previous suites for Flashback and Out of this World, this one takes a relatively stripped down (but thematic) chiptune and turns it into something more cinematic. In this case, I'm going for a sound similar to Basil Poledouris' Robocop score as well as Jerry Goldsmith's Total Recall score. Here's the rundown for my suite and what cues were utilized where:
INTRO - DESTRUCTION OF THE SPACE COLONY
00:00 - 01:04
Utilized most of the cue... fairly apparent... and made the end overly epic in sound.
THEME FROM SUPER METROID
01:05 - 02:06
Utilized the brass fanfare and the bassline as well as added in my own brass theme at the end.
MOTHER BRAIN
02:06 - 03:50
Utilized the ascending motif from the original cue but added in a ton of extra orchestration."
Beckett007's Out of this World submission was actually rejected as the medleyitis was prohibitive given our standards; it still sounded pretty darn sweet, but his previous Flashback ReMix and this piece are more cohesive. While hopefully even those who didn't play Flashback checked out the ReMixer's first track, this arrangement from Super Metroid should inevitably reach a larger audience. Things are just as cinematic as before, with Rich laying out an electro-orchestral atmosphere that sounds like it'd be right at home in a Peter Jackson film adaptation of Samus's adventures (pray that Uwe Boll doesn't find her first)... actually, speaking of film, this is a bit of a tangent, but I thought I'd recommend both No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood as truly exceptional films; I suppose everyone's talking about Cloverfield right now, and Atonement has a lot of award buzz, but these two films have been the highlights of my Oscar year, hands down. I can't recommend them enough. Now, back to business: you've got dramatic, booming percussion, synth rhythms (it seems synths are often used for repeating patterns when employed in such pieces - no complaints though, it works well), and orchestral components aplenty, but what particularly gives the intro at least a LotR feel are the choral textures, including staccato "shouts" of the variety employed by Mr. Shore. While more bombastic than the source material, this arrangement does a good job of capturing what I'll call the "stewing menace" of Metroid - that feeling of a cumulative force/evil that dwelleth in the shadows and groweth ever stronger, etc. Brass towards the end gets a wee bit blatty, but overall production is crisp, biting, and theatrical. I see a common link not only in the style of this and the ReMixer's previous submission, but in the source material as well: both Flashback and Super Metroid are enveloping, involved games that create a fantastic sense of environment and suspension of disbelief, and both could really be made into excellent films. In the hands of the right director, of course. Should Hollywood ever clue in and devote the appropriate talent and depth to game-based films (I think it's a "when" and not an "if," personally...), Rich Douglas would be a great asset in scoring the end result. I can close my eyes, listen to this ReMix, and direct key scenes from a hypothetical Metroid film in my head, and it seems like it'd be a blockbuster. Or, at the very least, better than BloodRayne. More awesome, imaginative stuff from Beckett007.

Not gonna lie. This is pretty epic all around. Great orchestration, superbly handled samples, and a just overall good sound. The only issue I have is that the transitions are all pretty abrupt for my tastes. I dunno.

superawesome interpretationit's so much better than what to expect from an "unofficial community thing remake"
you should definitly do this for a living (which you probably do)
He does.

I really like a lot of your ideas here. Your usage of percussion is intricate, interesting and well done. I also love the louder parts; I think they brought a strong, curious evil feel to the mix. Quite an improvement of your previous song posted because there are so many well executed transitions now.
We have a very talented artist here. Certainly deserved the direct post.

Nice intro; it really conveys that certain Metroid feeling. Epicniss follows from 0:28 on, very cinematic.
Good use of the choir sample, and again, epicness kicking in at 1:30. You definitely got the soundtrack-feeling you wanted to achieve right.
The transition into the next part around 2:10 isn't really good, though. Not as smooth as it should have been, but fortunately, the remix returns to its epicness shortly thereafter.
I love the music from the Metroid series, and you did some good things with it. Diggin' it.
However, I'd like to see you do a stand-alone remix, i.e. not a medley, in the future. Since that would get rid off most transition-related problems, I'm sure that you could pull off something even better than this.

First the good:
-Liked the intro.
-Production quality is great. Sounds very polished.
-Liked the mixed synth/tech with traditional orchestration. If you could mix opera in as well, you'd have something like Il Pleure by Art of Noise.
-Lots of good stuff here and there.
But:
-Would have liked to have heard the drums at 0:23-27 extended a bit (sounds like Spore Spawn miniboss) but LOTR kicks in a second or two after, so it comes off sounding rushed.
-1:30 pretty abrupt change there, too...
-Starting at 1:40 I feel like changing the melody (which didn't quite flatter it) was a bit much since at 1:50 you come up with a pretty good bridge leading into the next section.
-2:13 Ascending synth is really great here (in fact 2:14 to 2:21 is brilliant), but the only thing this section has in common with Mother Brain's boss music is four notes, of which you changed the rhythm. Had you used the voices to punch out the descending chromatic wails of the source material, I think this section would have been more climactic. The great thing about the original was the juxtaposition of the ascending, pounding baseline against those higher descending slides.
-Would have ended better at 3:38.
As a whole, though, good stuff.

Very organic, very delicious. I don't normally like orchestral mixes so much, but this one is very precise in its mood and progression. Kudos on what sounds like beat-sampling from Metroid Prime. Main menu/intro theme for Prime aside, I wish they would have tapped a few OCremixers for the Prime soundtracks. That would have been epic.

Hey, I love it! Sounds like a nice mix of Media Ventures/Brad Fidel influence with the Metroid radness.
Excellent work. Very original, and nice job on coming through with the themes, but still sounding like a background film score.
Well played...

This is flippin' awesome. Very epic and amazingly well-produced. This definitely deserves full OST privileges. Almost has the God of War feel at the beginning but the rolling synth bass gives it a more sci-fi feel that gives the entire remix a hugely cohesive and original sound. Extremely well done, my friend.
Definitely hear the StormDrum in it too

Love this.. very percussive....
Strangely The first thing to come to mind when I heard this was the opening parts of Star Trek - Nemesis, But since you mentioned Jerry Goldsmith as an influence, I understand why.. Great piece of work here!

Nice and powerful brass; and it does have a distinct space opera feel to it. The choir sample is well used as well, and the percussion is hitting hard enough that it's possible that you just recorded spaceships slamming into each other.
Everything is very polished sounding, and there are some great moments, but I found myself looking for more accompaniment. Often times there would be a melody with a rhythmic chord being played, but not much in the way of chord progressions.
In your sub letter you letter, you said you were aiming for the Basil Poledouris style and I think you completely nailed it; it's just not my favorite.
As far as Hollywood style, this is a very strong argument to get you some work in that field should you choose to pursue it.
Kickass mix, even though it doesn't push all my buttons.

Very dramatic, reminds me of much of the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack

Sorry to say, but this one really didn't do it for me. I felt like it had intensity, but not enough to me. I don't really know why, but I can't really say I'm impressed.

I don't normally add comments or reviews to remixes but this (and not to play favoritism given how I love the music to Super Metroid and how much I like the Metroid series in general) is a wonderfully done piece and deserves its place in the music hall of fame.
Oddly enough though when I listen to it I can't help but compare it to the scoring found in the television show Lexx; I'm not sure how many of you know of it but planets tend to get blown up in that program and it, too, features a woman who can contort herself into a ball and roll around at high speed.
All in all a great remix and one I'm glad I took the time to listen to it.

Well, he tried to make it sound like a film score and that's what it sounds like. That sums it up.
EDIT: I'm really sorry for being so flippant. This was skillfully done.
