ReMix:Animal Crossing "Traveling" 3:03

Arranging the music of 2 songs...

Primary Game: Animal Crossing (Nintendo , 2001, GCN), music by Kazumi Totaka, Kenta Nagata, Shinobu Nagata, Toru MinegishiPosted 2008-02-15, evaluated by the judges panel
Old school scene mixer Tim Sheehy returns! His last mix was way back in '04, but now he's back in action with our first Animal Crossing ReMix, which joins Harmony's F-Zero opus as our second comeback mix of 2008. Tim writes:
"The arrangement was done in 2004/2005. Some instruments were re-sampled and it was re-recorded with slight changes to the mix, specifically with OCR in mind. The faces are different, the attitudes are different and it's time I showed some love. Let's hope it stays that way."
In the paraphrased words of 80's rockers The Outfield, we don't wanna lose your love... tonight. Good to see Kaijin back on OCR, with an arrangement that takes more liberties than some of his older stuff, but still has the same polished instrumentalism and sweet production he earned his reputation for around these parts. Shariq says it well:
"Chorused piano makes it sound like a pop version of "Walt Disney Pictures Presents: Animal Crossing: The Movie." I'm waiting for Peabo Bryson to start singing. This is a good thing. High strings sound a little shrill when coming in, but it all fits with the style and they settle into the soundscape nicely as the song progresses. Nice texture throughout, really laid back. Great harmonica stuff near the end!"
Definitely rocking out the 80's era DX7 FM pure tine EP on that intro; Mr. Sword was on the money with the Disney refs, as my brain literally sang to itself, "I can show you the world..." during the intro. Deep kick and R+B style drums pair up well with softer, balladesque timbres. I see DS's note about the strings, but they make sense, and the harmonica stuff indeed brings the heat. It's basically everything you'd love about Kaijin's arrangements, but with a little more modern sheen and expansive arrangement, which means good things. Vinnie did an arrangement breakdown in the judges decision thread that you should read, and capped his decision off with the following:
"As far as the arrangement, I definitely got the early 90's ballad vibe. Aladdin and Vanessa Williams. You did a great job recreating the sound, and there's a lot of detail in the parts. I love the little counter-melodies and trills, and the closing harmonica, while clearly fake, suited the song well. They did that sort of thing in the 90's. Production was lush and clear, and the instruments have nice tones. The programming of the instruments was quite human. All in all, it was very slick work and it deserves to be heard."
And heard it shall be. I imagine there were more than a couple folks out there waiting for an AC ReMix, and this sugary-sweet rendition makes for an excellent resurrection for Kaijin, who captures a specific sound and era rather perfectly. We missed posting this on Valentine's Day (my bad), but if you've got Vday-related weekend plans, work this mix in for when you dim the lights, pour the wine, and whisper sweet nothings. Pretty.

Pretty sappy. Remarkably tolerable - must be all that Stardew. But not much to it, except to be played over the credits of your nicest day of summer memories.

Hah, yes! Finally some Animal Crossing coverage I can get behind! This one hit my playlist ever since it was on the front page and I've listened to it sporadically ever since. The source is one of my favorites from the game (not surprising, since the melody shows up in a lot of different forms throughout the game) so this sugary-sweet pop ballad arrangement felt entirely appropriate. The whole song reminds me of the feeling of somber sadness as you travel away to another town on a train... even though you're just visiting, it felt like you were saying goodbye to your town for good.
I dunno, I get overly reminiscent when it comes to games like Animal Crossing, but let me say that the way you treated this source tune is entirely appropriate! Thanks for doing justice to a severely-underremixed game!

Nice Harmonica touch, favorite part of the whole remix. Keep up the good job. Kudos.

I really enjoyed the style of this. I'm a fan of 90s music, and this had a nice soulful 90s sound to it. I liked the light percussion. It gave the music a small dose of back-up, but I like that the melody carried the piece the whole way through.
If Animal Crossing was a game that ever ended, I could imagine hearing this as the song used in the credit roll.
Speaking of endings, that harmonica bit at the end was nicely done. I know the question of whether or not it's "too fake" has come up, but I think it really fit the song's mood and the game it from which the mix was inspired.

Holy Disney Pop Ballad. Like, really. Whew.
Really cute piece. Overly sappy, but not really in a bad way. A little too fake sounding for my tastes, but again, in it's own way they fit the style. Nice work.

One of the best Harmonica solos I've heard in a long time. (Dead serious right here - I've heard some pretty bad ones recently.)
Song is amazing - you nailed it right on the head, buddy. Excellent.

This one is definitely not to my tastes, but it obviously hits the spot it was going for. I thought the harmonica was great. The modulation made it very intresting - a "straight" harmonica solo might have been way too saccharine.
This track is pretty loud, I had to dial it down a couple of notches when it came up among some other tracks I've been listening to.

My point was that it was intentionally fake, not that you're opinion is wrong.Maybe you were reading into my response a bit much. I wasn't dissing your review. I was merely putting the harmonica in context. I wouldn't want to leave my listeners thinking that I actually was going for a realistic harmonica, when I wasn't.
Thank you for the compliments though.
That, I can accept. I guess I did read it a bit too much then. Mods, feel happy to remove this post if you see fit.

Then good job on the harmonica! My point was that it's a bit too fake for my taste, no matter what you intended it to sound like otherwise you can just go around dissing everyones reviews saying "it's supposed to sound like that", even though a review is someone's personal opinion.
Just sayin'

I explained this one back in 2004, but it's that way on purpose. In fact, I'd say it's a bit tame in comparison to the material that influenced it. If you're interested in an example, track down the album "Black Holiday" by Palm Drive, from Japanese hip-hop producer Akira. The last track "I'm Sorry", which is actually the bonus track on that disc provides a great example of a pitch bent, and a heavily modulated harmonica patch.tl;dr version: It's supposed to be fake.

The harmonica solo is a bit too fake but still a much needed new element in the mix.

I don't mean this as an insult or anything, but this is totally something I could hear playing in an elevator somewhere. Really a mellow song, but I like it. The fake harmonicas don't hurt it too badly, but the ending I thought was a little weird with the vibrated strings, because I generally associate that sound with a build up instead of a fade out. But that's a small nitpick to an otherwise great song. Good job Kaijin.

I was more than pleasantly surprised when I found out that there was finally an Animal Crossing remix up, and I'm ever so relieved that it's turned out so well. I've been bellyaching about the lack thereof for quite a while.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this one, even if it's not quite the lazy vibe that I had first pictured. Still a great start to the vacation. Overall I give it a 9.5 out of 10, if only because 10/10 sounds too ingratiating.
