Arranging the music of one song...
"Chicago: Stealth"
Primary Game: Perfect Dark (Rare , 2000, N64), music by David Clynick, Graeme Norgate, Grant KirkhopePosted 2008-10-04, evaluated by the judges panel
We're proud to present our third VGM composer interview, with Grant Kirkhope... and, just in time, we've got a Perfect Dark submission by Krispy. Actually, this was submitted by someone else on his behalf, which is a bit of a no-no by our submission standards, but we checked with Kris and he was groovy with us posting it, and this certainly seems like a fitting occasion. He writes:
"...I kind of left the scene with a whisper when all my friends disappeared one by one (I still haven't heard anything from Mr. Alexander since that day although I keep in touch with Robert Guinn). Yes that is mine and for what is worth, it was the last song I produced some two years ago... God knows it is way less sloppy than the Halo remix I have on there (talk about a shitzophrenic song)."
If you or anyone you know has information as to the whereabouts of said GrayLightning, who completely disappeared way back when, do let us know... it's one of OCR's great mysteries, to be sure. This mix starts with a MIddle Eastern-inflected saxish wind and vibraphone establishing a great space with their respective panning/ambiance, as percussion, an acoustic upright bass, and various synth pads/fx lead into the beat drop at 0'37". DJ Shadow-ish chillout/downbeat, maybe a little like Skryp's SMRPG mix, but the re-entrant wind lead and subsequent ensemble strings go into more cinematic territory, DEFINITELY appropriate to the PD universe and the general vibe of spy/espionage... stuff. Sometimes ambient/chill pieces like this don't develop much, but because there's a clear theatrical influence, Kris definitely tells a story, and the overal intensity increases as the piece moves forward. Drums are crunchy, mixed industrial and hip-hop fare, and work well with the orchestral and ethnic components the ReMixer chose. Palpable, who along with his gf Amy will be joining me in Utica, NY for SITACon next weekend, writes:
"This is awesome. Great atmosphere built out of strings, decaying beats, and background synths (would have loved some rain and thunder FX too, haha). Excellent development of the simple Chicago theme - I get the feeling that this is what the original song wanted to be. Love the elegance of the climbing strings at 2:16. Production is very good. I agree that the bass playing could have been tighter, but that's not close to stopping this one."
Armcannon are gonna be at SITACon as well, so if you're in the area, definitely check it out. All in all, a great track from Krispy that comes at a perfect time; check out our Grant Kirkhope interview while you listen for the full experience!

I like this a whole lot. Definitely has a lot of the game's mood locked inside it, whilst taking a much more defined, fresher approach to things. I thought the inclusion of a bit of ethnicity was pretty inspired and worked a treat with the creepy main theme. In itself, the source tune itself is hard to classify, and this mix doesn't exactly give it any more direction than it already had. The piano and stringwork do a pretty good job in extracting as much foreboding out of the piece as possible, but it's a difficult score to get overly creative with so I don't know whether this does much more than provide a much better sounding, much more consumable track with some necessary diversity and arrangement thrown in. Despite the bells and a bit of dithering, there's nothing here not present in the game itself, but I do appreciate what's here nevertheless. Solid work.

Great remix. I've remixed this song before myself but you brought a lot of originality to the tracking of it and the drums really set this apart from other remixes I've heard. Kudos.

Both nostalgic and breathtakingly melancholy. Thank you for posting this.

Not usually a big fan of the spy music genre, unless it's Harry's Metal Gear Solid scores, but the fact remains this is a very well developed piece. Respectful to the flavor of the original game. It goes places, and feels like it has something to say, which tends to be sticking point for me with a lot of jazz/chill/groove mixes. They tend to stick with one or two breakdowns and play off them for 20 minutes ad nauseum. None of that here. Solid work.

The strings really give this remix a movie-score-esque feeling.

Very cool processing on the percussion, and the grandiose processional feel it has really evokes some sort of futuristic military organization. Textures were great, and the woodwinds and strings sounded very nice.
Progression was steady and consistent, and though I think some staccato distorted guitar slashes would have fit in pretty nicely, this track isn't missing anything.
Though it's a little too laid back to go on my bro'ed-out workout mix, this will definitely be the theme song for my private militia once I get all the legal permits taken care of. The amount of red tape you need to go through to get your own squad of assassins is staggering!
Nice work.

It's been way too long since the last PD remix. Nice to see something new here. I'm pretty sure the woodwind instrument used here is also used in one or several of the TW series soundtracks, which kind of bothers me but is hardly your fault. I think this mix a little too far from the source to be truly enjoyable for me, but it's a pretty interesting piece of music on its own, if somewhat dull. I guess I just wasn't in the mood for chill music today.

Very cool. It's chill but rockin' at parts, and the production is awesome. Sweet job.

Nice work on this one Krispy, i'm still enjoying a lot the work you did in Perfect Dark source and the way you keep the feeling of each of those perfect dark music.

I love this song - captures the essence of the Chicago level very well. I first found this on the PD: Source website and couldn't help but wonder if it was the same Krispy. Very well done!
