Arranging the music of one song...

You may have noticed our shiny new "mega-dropdown" navigation. It's still being refined somewhat, but it's pure CSS, SEO-friendly, and gives us a bit more breathing room to highlight all the cool stuff (we think, at least) going on. Give it a couple days to grow on you - we think you'll dig it. We (meaning me, essentially) also think you'll dig this Nemo mix from newcomer Paul Ford, alias metaphist. In his resubmission email, he wrote:
"Sorry for the wait, guys. I was excited that the complaints on the first sub were minimal, and I actually did most of the edits that same month. But I didn't want to rush it, so I let it sit while coming back to it periodically to make sure I liked it. Other obligations got the better of me, and before I knew it, a few months had already gone by. After letting this sit for months, I finally realized I should probably just submit it before I get sidetracked again! I don't have the same time I used to for music...
I think the major issue from before had to do with fleshing out the main sections a little more. I approached that by adding a layer of piano chords in the two main sections. Some had a problem with the slow section in the middle being a bit too long, but there was really no way to shorten it without losing the feel. So this is it. Maybe this getting excepted would motivate me to finish up my many other idle tracks!"
Of course, it was in the end accepted rather than excepted, which would have been a bad thing; either way here's hoping Paul does indeed feel motivated to finish up some of his other works, as this one's solid. Fluttering, flittering synth fireflies buzz about the ambient, floating intro, paving the way for a swing-time melodic soft jazz groove. An EP covers accompanying chords, supporting a bell lead, then gets some solo action further in. Paul feels very comfortable dropping the drums out, so the end result here is something that floats between straight-edge melodic soft jazz/ballad and more new agey territory. The ebb and flow makes it rather dreamlike, which is quite appropriate given the source material. Jimmy Circles writes:
"LOVE the glitchy pad right off the bat. Somehow I feel compelled to say something about Omnisphere now, but I wont. Crap, I just did, didn't I?
Second impulse is this reminds me a lot of Ziwtra's Blue Shooting Star mix. The drum groove, and all the shimmering, sparkling textures throughout. It's a very lovely piece to tap one's toes to, and it's full of warm fuzziness. I really dig the reverse delay effects, and I actually really enjoyed the chime outro. On the arrangement end, I really like the jazzy, yet laid back vibe that this piece has. This is a really enjoyable track. I can't really think of a better word for it."
Which sums things up perfectly, methinks. This is definitely a case of the genre/approach being very tailored to the source material - definitely music to jump over large mushrooms in your pajamas to, in other words. Dreamy, somnambulant debut showing from metaphist.

Aside from being fun and upbeat, the sounds are clear like touching glass or skipping on water. Very peaceful, especially after mid-way.

Extremely light-hearted mix pronounciating an extremely light-hearted source. This is essentially a modernized lullaby, which actually brings me to call out the drums used in here. They are perhaps a little too harshly suited to what this is; sweet, dreamy lounge jazz. For me, it creates a lot of tension inside what would have otherwise been an extremely chill flow.
Other than the drums, there's fine instrumentation and a nice approach to spacial arrangement, but I can't help but be disappointed that it goes against the lullaby vibe considerably by being harder hitting than it probably had any right to be. Also, it's not the most melodic, catchy or interesting of sources, but it's not without its charm either.
Regardless, this is about as innocent and light as things get around here, so I'd recommend it if the sweet side of OCR is your thing. I don't know if I'd ever chill to it, but I certainly have no qualms about listening to it whilst playing TF2.

I listened to this song when it was only a W.I.P and kept it because i was always smiling while listening
I'm glad it's an official OC now
Cheers, thank you metaphist

Very cute! I'm smiling while I write this, because you can't help but be in a good mood when you listen to this. A very apt title, too.
The transition from the almost-ominous part back to the happy world is a little bit awkward. In fact, I'm a little put off by the ominous part to begin with, but I can see why you would include it.
Aside from that, bubbly fun!

I've been trying to get a mix posted for a long time, so all the "about times" I've been reading are pretty legit Thanks a lot you guys, for all the support given over the years (especially you, Monobrow). The motivation to get on OCR was the sole thing driving my musical evolution in the past, so I'm feelin' pretty good right now!
I was actually shocked to see this posted. There was a minor clipping issue that I was helpless to solve since I lost my samples after making this song, and it was the one stipulation the judges gave along with it's acceptance. I told them It probably wouldn't get fixed for obvious reasons, so I really had no idea what they intended to do. And then I checked the site today...
@prophet
Couldn't really tell ya exactly what I used in the intro pad's. It was a combination of a few simple pads, with most of the flourishes hand programmed from other samples. Glad everyone liked it though!

I like how the remix manages to stay close to the whole idea of sleeping and dreaming. While it is cheery and upbeat, it still manages to sound like a melody you'd play to a little kid who's about to go to sleep.
Sweet dreams.

A nice, tasty treat for the ears without being too saccharine sweet. A difficult balance to achieve. Well done.

hey, another Remix Affiliates guy gets posted! awesome.
love the mix, particularly the opening synths you've got going on. what did you use for that pad? i love it.

Really melodic and bubbly mix, it definitely makes me happy to listen to
I can't be the only one to have drawn the connection between this remix and the Rainbow Road song from Mario Kart Wii at certain parts, though. I asked my girlfriend about it and she immediately drew the connection to Rainbow Road, too. Of course, I've been playing that game all day so it might just be stuck in my head

Yay! It's about damn time my friend!
I remember the WIP of this from back in the day (and the many many others), you really followed up with some of the things I think I asked for - and then some.
Real chill, as always. Really glad your music gets to be heard :J
Congrats bud!
As for the song, really like the drumwork, of course I'm a huge fan of the EP and rhodes, as well as your padwork, awesome. Like the changeup at around 3:00 as well, dream-like.

It's about durn time you got a mix on OCR. Been a fan ever since you remixed Ikaruga way back when.
Definitely lovin' the Japanese high school anime vibe you got goin' on here. Kudos also for covering a lesser-known game...I've never played it, but I encourage this behavior in general on principle.

Nice and smooth - this song makes me feel good. I dig pretty much everything about it. Highlights for me are the nice bass groove you've got going and the arrangement in general. I'm not too familiar with the source material but you've definitely got an excellent piece here. Keep it up - I want to hear more!

Oooo....I have a feeling this remix will go nicely after Shane Barber's excellent work with Nightmare King's battle-music : )

Beautiful track, I love this light jazzy style, and added to a great source track, you have a winner.
Great progression and some classy modulations; this really gives a great feeling, and it's varied enough that six listens later i'm still finding new things that impress me. I love the little syncopated parts in the middle section.
Drums still seem to be a little loud, but everything else is really nicely balanced, and the flow of the track is good too.
Excellent work, I can't wait to hear what you've got coming up next.

I got pretty excited when I saw Dream Master on the front page, definitely a game I remember fondly. I was slightly disappointed when I saw that the mix was of the ending song (which I don't remember) as opposed to one of the stage songs, which I think I would have remembered better, but the way it turns out, I had nothing to worry about.
This is one of those peaceful, listen to it anytime you want to relax type tracks, and I'm really happy to add it to my roster, despite the fact that I still don't remember what the original sounded like. Probably time to look into that...
Keep up the great work, and I hope to hear more soon!
