ReMix:Valkyrie Profile "The Shining Blue Armor Descends" 5:24
By Fray, The Legendary Zoltan
Arranging the music of 2 songs...
"Behave irrationally", "Turn over a new leaf"
Primary Game: Valkyrie Profile (Enix , 1999, PS1), music by Motoi SakurabaPosted 2009-07-17, evaluated by the judges panel
You wanted it... you needed it... you ceaslessly demanded it... and now OC ReMix has got it: Our very first Viking Metal ReMix. Not to be confused with technoviking. I suppose it was only a matter of time before the Norse gods descended upon the judges panel and waged heavy metal mayhem; in this instance CHIPP Damage and Fray are the engines of their fury. Jahan Zoltan Honma, whose name is ridiculously fun to pronounce, writes:
"I hope you're ready for a resubmission of my remix of the most important song from the best Norse Mythology -based RPG (Irrational Behavior from Valkyrie Profile), done in the only Norse Mythology-based modern genre of music (Viking Metal), produced by a guy whose name is pronounced just like that of a Norse God (Fray), and arranged by a guy whose got nothing Norwegian to his name except for perhaps some viking-esque snowflakes in his beard (Me). This plate of sweets has all the death-voiced gingerbread men, Weeping Lily pollen-filled brownies, and RAGNAROKY ROAD ice cream that the previous one had, except this time it's produced twice as well. Fray got a new oven and has been cooking this thing for. . . like ever! And I REALLY appreciate him for it. He tried his best to selflessly satisfy the helpful comments of the judges (Thanks for those, by the way) while simultaneously giving me the viking-esque sound that I was longing for. We're both really happy with the results and we hope you are too."
There seem to be a lot of angry, dark, metal vocal mixes lately - first 'Asphyxiated Soul' and now this. Whereas Kadmium's DooM mix was over-the-top disturbing and evil, this mix is just... over the top; if you're not a fan of shouted, semi-intelligible man-vocals, you might not be down. If you are, then step right up! Original lyrics name-drop a metric ton of Norse mythology, with familiar video game icons like Yggdrasil, Bahamut, and Ragnarok all making an appearance. Put simply, this mix will put hair on your chest and may in fact trigger reverse evolution from homo-sapiens back to Australopithecus... or further. It is not subtle; one might go so far as to say it is an outright rejection of all things subtle, nuanced, or restrained in any way. CHIPP is NOT using his indoor voice, here. He's very enthusiastically growling about Norse things, and if that's specifically what you've been missing in your life (and really, how could it not be?), your ship has come in. Judges had a rough time evaluating this since Viking Metal has its own... unique... style. Guitar is great, though, and there's a ton of variety, with the arrangement basically just spazzing out in a frenetic, apoplectic conniption fit of sound. If Odin went off his meds and had a temper tantrum, deciding to shout about, you know, "life"... it might sound something like this. Jahan wrote a whole story for this, and I think the world will be a richer place if I repeat it verbatim:
"I am Zoltan, the legendary travelling warrior who united all the countries of the Yamato Continent. Ragnarok begins and I prepare for the war with all of my friends in Hai-lan. We start fighting and I die when an arrow hits my shield and releases a cloud of weeping lilly pollen (poisonous). No Valkyrie comes for me but the Rainbow Bridge to Valhalla appears before me. I journey across the bridge. After arriving, I walk through the hall and find nobody except for a single norn, Skuld. I ask where all of the Einherjar are. Skuld tells me that Ragnarok is a war not only for humans, but that gods and even the dead must fight(In other words, the Valkyries are busy too). He tells me that there are legends of my bravery on Midgard that have been spoken among the Einherjar and that Odin, upon hearing these tales, had decided that I would be chosen to change the outcome of Ragnarok. So Odin told two of his best Einherjar to leave great weapons for me. Those warriors are Arngrim and Lucian. From Arngrim: The Bahamut's Tear. And from Lucian: The Shining Bolt. And from Skuld I receive a swan maiden's feathered cloak. He tells me to use this to go to other worlds of the Yggdrasil to help battle. So I take them and am granted life once more and am falling from the sky. I use Bahamut's Tear and Shining Bolt to defeat all enemies in Yamato. After the battle in Yamato, my friends and I jump into our dragon ships with our entire armies and head to Asgard to defeat Surtur. We make the journey to Jotunheim by wishing upon the swan maiden's feathered cloak. At Jotunheim we help win the battle and the outcome of Ragnarok is turned in Odin's favor. In the end I end up killing Surtur and that means he can't burn the world with his fiery hands like in real Norse Mythology, but I get engulfed in flames and die shortly after and this time get carried off to Valahalla by a valkyrie to enjoy the feast of the Einherjar after the victory of Ragnarok."
Damn right...testify. This mix takes its conceptual origins and embraces them full on. While most of us probably don't wake up in the morning and say "Damn, I could really go for some Viking Metal!," one can still appreciate the enthusiasm, energy, and yes, the craft that goes into this sort of opus. Fray's done a good job with production, too, and I even feel like the distortion & occasional vocal clipping the judges had beef with makes sense, given the context. Jahan specifically requested we include his following special thanks to:
"Moseph, Yoozer, Dannthr, Sengin, zircon, Harmony, JJT, big giant circles, Darkesword, OA, Snappleman, Trenthian, SwordBreaker, Legion303, Sixto, anyone else I may have missed, Fray for becoming my beloved collaboration partner and kicking some production ass, Hoboka and djpretzel for random props in my forum thread, and Tensei-san for listening to this remix about 100 times after every miniscule change to the audio that was made. "You are my embassador of coin."
An epic special thanks list for an epic mix; this definitely won't be for everyone, but if you can let yourself go, it's really rather special. You can tell CHIPP's poured his heart into it, and possibly several other body parts as well, and the result is something singular, forceful, and extremely beefy.

Holy shit. This is condensed epic. Groundbreaking on OcreMix. \m/ (O.O) \m/ I guess I'm in for surprises like this when I haven't updated my ocremix torrents in a long time. It sounds like they mixed in some metalcore elements in the style here and there. The vocals were generally pretty good too, except perhaps the very beginning, which felt very metalcore-ish to me, at least. Overall though this is quality from start to finish. Fitting production, great guitar/drum work, etc ...

I think I can understand the aesthetic of vocal production being a little less capable than the rest of the song. .
I like all the synopation/ key changes/ meter changes really stays true to the genre and the source )))

Well, this is definitely something that appears only to a very small group of people. Not exactly my cup of tea, but it was okay to listen to. The slower, quieter, more melodic parts were more to my liking than the ones with the growling, but that's personal preference.

Viking Metal is the genre I spend most time listening to, reading this mix description really got me interested even though I'm not too familiar with the source material.
I think the whole thing is great, it sounds like Bathory meets Falkenbach meets Amon Amarth, I really like this !
The rasp Black Metal vocals could have been recorded a bit better though, especially since the rest sounds so smooth. The guitar work is awesome
Thanks for making this, I like it and it helps me believing Viking Metal is a real genre that can appeal to a wide audience =)

I wonder if we could get Motoi to comment on other people arranging this stuff for a change.

Holy bananas. Simply, wow. When I read that this mixed "Behave Irrationally"(without reading the description), I expected a very calm and soothing piece. Boy, was I in for a surprise!
Overall, this is one of the more original mixes I've heard in a while for a video game. It's very... out there. But at the same time, it fits perfectly with the Valkyrie Profile universe(or any other game that has Motoi Sakuraba's name on it).
The arrangement is absolutely solid. I really didn't expect hearing those two pieces in a heavy and intense metal rock song. My only gripe (and I'm sure I speak for others as well) is the mixing. Sometimes, it sounds too "muddy", the bass is way overpowering, or it just doesn't sound clear enough.
However, I believe the idea and the execution of this mix more than make up for that small little annoyance. Sure, it's definitely not a relaxing piece, but it really powers you up! I feel like taking on the gods themselves upon listening to this!
Bravo!

Yep, "Epic" is the right word. Thanks for not being afraid to post something with so narrow an appeal, the metalheads here really appreciate it. God knows this song isn't leaving my playlist anytime soon.

I didn't hear a lot of source material, but now I'm kicking myself for not finishing that Hip Hop track with Chipp Damage now that I have a better idea of his vocal capacities. Shit.
on 2009-07-17 15:40:56
... wow. That was intense, and it should go without saying that I've never heard anything remotely like this on OCR before. It's great to see new ground being broken all the time on this site, so thanks for perpetuating that notion of expansion and creativity!
That being said, I have no idea how to go about reviewing this. I've never listened to Viking Metal in my life so I don't know how this stacks up compared to the professional stuff. I liked the growling vocals, but the spoken word felt pretty corny to me, honestly. That's about all I've got to say.

Everyone of us has heard the call!
Pretty damn authentic sounding, with some rocking guitar parts- this has come a long way since the WIP thread. I think the mixing was still rough, but it makes it more kvlt.
I'm sure i mentioned it before, but vikings wielding katanas? I assume it's because you are fighting with your homies from Japan and you gotta make due with what's available. Struck me as weird until I put two and two together.
Anyways, congrats on getting this posted, seems like a death vox explosion this past month; pretty cool.
La oss skåle for Chipp and Fray!

Hahaha! That's so cool!
And I love that OCR is getting more and more variation!

Jun, sharpen the katanas.
Suo, bring the armor.
Shiho, sing your song of courage.
Yumei, raise the lapis high.
The war of 9 worlds has begun
and we are outnumbered 10 to 1.
Nanami takes the odds and evens them.
Tenchu raining down from heaven!
Ragnarok is unleashed across these worlds
I choose to fight in Hai-lan.
Battle screams sound faster than Heimdal's horn
when an arrow hits my shield.
A cloud of Weeping Lilly pollen is unleashed.
I fall to my knees
but there is no valkyrie.
I must journey across the rainbow bridge alone.
Skuld!
Where are the Einherjar?
This is Ragnarok.
Even the dead can't rest.
You have been chosen by Odin to turn the tide of Ragnarok.
Your deeds on Midgard are known to us. A warrior of legend to the Einherjar.
You must fight for the All-Father or the Yggdrasil will fall to the flames of Nifleheim
So take the Bahamut's Tear.
And take the Shining Bolt.
To take your army to Valhall
use the Swan Maiden's Cloak.
And fight like you are Aesir!
I thrust my sword through Surtur,
piercing his heart of flame.
And as I am engulfed in his fire
I see the shining blue armor descend.
