ReMix:Reset Generation "Kid Malicious" 4:06

Arranging the music of one song...
"SID Vicious"
Primary Game: Reset Generation (Nokia , 2008, NGAGE), music by 8 Bit WeaponPosted 2009-08-15, evaluated by djpretzel
Live from San Japan, I'm here to post our very first ReMix from a cell phone game... specifically for Nokia's N-Gage. Always late to the game, I think I first heard the music of 8 Bit Weapon (Michelle Mitchell and Seth Sternberger) at VGL in Philly, way back in 2006, not as part of the show proper, but during intermission. I remember thinking "Whoa, what's this?" and "These guys should totally score a game..." Well, technically it's one guy and one gal, but they did just that, putting together an awesome soundtrack for Reset Generation which, like the game itself, pays homage to a wide spectrum of retrogaming culture. It was the perfect game to have them score - I don't know the full story behind how this magical pairing came to be, but you should check out the game and (especially) download the free original soundtrack (!!)
Massive props go to Larry, then, for he saw the opportunity for OC ReMix to work with Seth & Michelle and put together a little competition for ReMixing the RG score. There were some truly inspired entries, and Larry, Seth, Michelle and myself scored all of them. I really had a blast listening to each song and comparing it in depth to the source, since both were always kickin'. In the end, though, there can be only one, and thus I'm proud to post Rayza's winning entry. Last time we saw Hayden was 2007 - clearly bribing him out of hiding with prizes has been an effective strategy. It was great to see him enter, and even greater to hear his track, which was unanimously appreciated by all four judges. He writes:
"I have remixed the song "SID Vicious" for the 8BW contest. I've named my remix "Kid Malicious." Had fun doing it, hope you (all) enjoy..."
Nice play on clever original title makes djpretzel happy, but the track is truly some awesome shizz. Introing with bubbling FMish textures over which a soaring monoglide solo enters, there's definitely a retro/tracker vibe going on, but it's simultaneously slick & modern. I love the quick triplet rolls on the ensuing groove that triggers a build; very danceable stuff. I could go on, but it's essentially classic Rayza... Larry just closed out a trance set here at San Japan, and both bLiNd and Rayza's names triggered tons of recognition and applause from the crowd, as did zircon's. And for good reason; Hayden's taken a modern classic in 'SID Vicious' and produced a modern classic of his own. Massive props to Larry for the contest idea, 8 Bit Weapon for writing such awesome music in the first place and being groovy about getting involved w/ OCR, Nokia for providing a pimp-ass phone as gift, and Rayza - and all other entrants - for sending in some stellar arrangements. We'll be releasing them all as an EP sometime in the next couple weeks, but until then, enjoy 'Kid Malicious.'

Diggin that lead at the beginning, and I love the lead at around 3:00. In general the entire piece is high-powered and fun! I love indie game music so discovering this OST thanks to your mix is a bonus.

I think that actually Tepid's "TRIX" deserves the first place, but... Oh, well. Rayza's track is sweet and catchy as well. There's really that 90's sound to this one. The beat is just dangerously catchy and the chopped female vocals is a pretty nice touch. So awesome!

Loving the holy hell out of this one.
Rayza did it again with this perfect exercise on 90s dance indulgence. In my opinion, this homage actually eclipses any dance track produced in the 90s (which admittedly, I've never been a fan of).
I really love how this track develops, and continues to evolve in interesting ways. Rather than just sticking with pure rhythm, there's a lot of melody that begins to be incorporated and the combination is just awesome. The work done with the vocal samples was especially impressive and that solo is truly a classic, showstopper.
This is the bees knees, as far as I'm concerned. One of Rayza's best, which is saying quite a lot.

This is AWESOME, the chopped female vocals are what draw me to this track. That part was expertly implemented and just sounds plain awesome. Aside from that, the song is breezy, creative, and just makes you want to get up and dance!
One of the most fun tracks to hit the front page this year, you can't beat this kind of goodness!

I'll be honest and say I didn't really think too much of the source track for this game (sorry guys ), but this remix really rocks my socks.
Some very creative transitions, panning, and rhythmic adjustments. The vocal clip was chopped and arranged really well, and I loved the solo.
Great work all around.

I LOVE this mix! I'm crazy about 90s music, and this definitely has that vibe working for it. It is a winner for sure.
I really liked the vocals near the end. I'm not sure what she's saying, but it sounds so good! Excellent from beginning to end!

When I read djp's write-up, I was a little thrown off when he talked about "modern classics" as that seemed a bit over-the-top.
But damn, he was right. This remix is incredible. I dunno whether it was Rayza's intention, but he managed to nail the 90's sound to a T. And that's what I thought before the vocal sample, which cranked the awesomeness to 11, came in at 2:25.
Best OCR remix in quite a while? I do think so.

Very fun song! I'd love to hear the competition, but this was really great. Good energy.

It's probably too dangerous to post an unbiased and honest opinion of this track
If you're too much of a dum-dum to post it in a constructive way, just leave it at that.

It's probably too dangerous to post an unbiased and honest opinion of this track, so I'll just say congratulations on winning that contest.

Rayza = one of the original reasons I even considered producing tracks. This track is SICK man!

Rayza's back with one heck of a bang. I couldn't download this fast enough and as always with his stuff I adore it.
