Arranging the music of one song...
"Door into Summer"
Primary Game: Knuckles' Chaotix (Sega , 1995, 32X), music by Junko Shiratsu, Mariko NanbaPosted 2009-10-28, evaluated by the judges panel
Ahh, Knuckles Chaotix. For that matter... ahhh, Sega 32X. While it prevents me from candidacy for President of the United States, I've admitted in the past to owning Sega's ill-fated add-on, and I did in fact have this game as well. Miraculously, I was not beaten up at school for this. Hindsight is always 20/20, as they say, but at the time it DID have the best port of Space Harrier available, and that game is my joint. Dodecahedrons ftw. But I digress... my memories of this game mostly consist of the bizarre tethering of characters, which felt like a strange form of anthro S&M... BUT IT WAS 32-BIT!! It didn't matter. Plus, the music was pretty good, and now Willrock's here to prove it. The artist writes:
"This remix for me is a return to my old sound that I had before I joined ocr. My music used to have more of a chip-tune flavor, and I decided to make a remix in that style, utilizing techniques I learnt from my time at ocr. Basically, this is the result. It may be a little too chip-tune like for ocr, but that's the intention for this mix."
To clarify, we are not and have never been members of the anti-chiptune party (if one even exists)... we do however factor in production when evaluating submissions, and the genre allows - but does not dictate - verbatim, unprocessed usage of rudimentary waveforms that significantly reduces the number of mixing decisions an artist is responsible for. Plenty of folks have been illustrating recently that the "chiptune sound" is not incompatible with OCR, and I'd say the panel's actually passed "chippier" mixes than this. Let's see what OA says:
"Production is decent, one of the nice things about chippy stuff like this is that everything is so clean, you can do some crazy arrangement stuff, and with this track, Will doesn't disappoint. Great panning, stutters, and all kinds of other tomfoolery. Nice and peppy source, and though some of the sound quality is a bit weak (specifically that bass for me), it's still carried by a strong but loyal arrangement and some cool processing ideas."
Palpable adds:
"Love the sound of this actually, it's like enhanced chiptune. Reminded me of the Monkey Ball series, which has a similar style of music. The drum processing section was pretty sweet, and there were a number of trills and synth ex
pression things I enjoyed."
Vinnie and Andrew covered it pretty well, but I especially like the ritard on the book-ended fade/filter-out percussive ending - it's the little things, you know? Happy, chipper, solid stuff from Willrock; if you're like me, and I know I am, you're cheering for the Yanks in the World Series, and for every game they win, this seems like excellent "happy dance" music.

Knuckles' Chaotix' OST is pretty awesome and it's shame that it's so unpopular among the remixers. But Door into Summer in particular became a somewhat classic, even being a part of this unpopular OST. Love what Will did here - it's still quite close to the source, but it's really a nice upgrade of the original as well. Very happy and warm tune ^-^

Busting out with chip tunes on this ReMix kinda surprised me consider who did it, but it's impressive. Very happy with a decent load of upbeat energy and it does fit well for a happy dance. Nice work on this one.

Ah, Door Into Summer. Ah Knuckles Chaotix. I don't remember where on earth I heard the music for this game, or where I heard of the game even.
All I remember was hearing Door into Summer, and wanting to remix it.
As far as my remixes go, I wanted to return to my more simple sound design of my earlier mixes that got popular on Youtube before OCR corrupted my mind and ate my soul.
What came out was simple sound design, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting - it was a bit of an accident, more chiptune/genesis like in sound design than my older stuff. However the sound really gelled for me and I ran with it. I did alot of experimentation with gating and frequency changing in this mix, as well as seeing the birth of my typical drum solo which I used later in "Transient Shadows"
This mix isn't the most popular of my OC Remixes, probably due to the lesser known game source tune, but its probably one of my most fun remixes.

....MOAR
MOOOAAARRRR
you and halc, man, too much good stuff between the two of you, I LOVE CHIPPPSS ;aksdfakld;a
..the sounds put me in my happy place and keep me sufficiently medicated to make it through another day, pushing all the negativity to the dark corners of my mind and keeping me on top
great!

I think it sounds great but I think it can be improved. At 2:00 it becomes redundent though, not to sound mean but it just does and it goes off rubbing me the wrong way sorta. However, 0:00-1:40 kept me jaw dropping and amazing complexity at 1:40-2:00. But after that it kinda made me turned away as mentioned above.

I feel bad that Bahamut can't listen to this one 'cause of the bass, because it's really excellent! The opening is a creative touch, but past that it's classic Willrock. Retro sounding synths and bass make this one feel just like the classic chiptunes but with much more modern, upgraded sounds. The synth soloing doesn't get quite as crazy as Will's other mixes, but it's still an enjoyable, sugary-sweet romp nonetheless

About time I commented on this one. This is a nice contrast to Redifer's take on the same source. Yours has more of a playful vibe to it. The synth work is as it usually is, melodies normal, sound typical, etc... Typical WillRock... it rocks. Yeah, I know, very origina of me.

Love the intro with the filter-fade, and this is just too happy and chippy to not love. Gives that perfect feeling of running through a field with other anthropomorphic friends doing god-knows-what. Can't say I'm a fan of the severe right-panned lead, but I'll deal with it because everything else balances it out. The drum break could have been a little more varied in my opinion, but with the style you did it in, it works just fine. Production is good, everything sounds nice. Not a fan of the ending though, you played the filter-fade already. Should have just been a "breaking-down synth machine" feel, like the game was just kind of slowly dying, but again, that's my opinion.

... This makes me want to make me want to get up and do a happy dance
Not familiar with the source unfortunately, but that's semantics. This is bright, peppy, summer-ry and most of all, fun! Especially that little drum breakdown.
Awesome work Will! *precedes to happy dance*

This is how you do chiptune. As a rush of glorious chip synths in total harmony with one another.
I'm pretty familiar with the source tune, which gave me even greater appreciation for how its represented here. There's some really excellent, really playful alterations to the melody that lift the mix, both in tone and quality. This genre of music, for me, is such a celebration of classic game music, and I think that comes through in this (despite the fact that the game wasn't from the same NES-style chiptune era).
There's not a lot I can say about mixes that have nothing wrong with them, except that I enjoy that people are still making unapologetically blissful music here on the site. Great stuff.

When I saw Chaotix on the block, I was hoping for something other than 'Door Into Summer,' simply because there's already a mix there for it (although an old one). Chaotix, while a crappy game, has some amazing tracks and definitely needs some attention on OCR.
I always love the chiptune-y stuff, so I'm digging this. Thanks Will, for a good mix and some Chaotix love.

Very upbeat. Kinda reminds me of the PWAA remixes OA did, even though the remix in hand leans much more towards chiptunes.
Nice work.

Great stuff. I really enjoy this kind of mix. That is -- sort of a mix between the old school NES audio goodness, with some modern production techniques/drum beats. This is great stuff . Thanks for a fantastic addition to my playlist!

Again!?
Well, I do like your new (old?) style over your old (new?) one. Though it feels as if you forgot to turn off the hi-pass filter after the intro there, bass is a little weak. I think.
Keep chippin' away!
