2000 was the first full year of OC ReMix's existence...

... we posted 158 mixes and survived our first slashdotting. We converted the site from a side-project to its own sub-domain at remix.overclocked.org - some of you remember these as the "orange days," for obvious reasons. Sure, not everything we posted was musical gold, but the world was introduced to hillbilly Bubble Bobble, Shael's groin, and the glory of McVaffe and AmIEviL. Mustin, po, Steffan, Peeples, Jivemaster, and many others all made their OCR debuts. For a relatively young website, we were off to a pretty damn awesome start!

Next up we've got another newcomer... err, newcomers... err, kinda: Several members of The Runaway Five participated in this larger ensemble. It seems like Canadian universities have all the fun, eh? We had Paul & the U. of Manitoba give us our first live orchestral mix back in 2008, and now Toronto joins the fun. This is a live recording as well, and you can hear a lot of ambient noise. In my opinion, it adds spontaneity and a sort of 1920's Savoy/club feeling, but your mileage may vary. Brendan provided the full credits and some comments:

  • Arranged by: Brendan McEroy (April 2009).
  • Performed by: the University of Toronto 10 O'Clock Big Band:
  • DIRECTED BY: Terry Promane
  • Rhythm Section - Brendan McElroy (Bass), Tyson Kerr (Piano), Mack Longpre (Drums), Alex Goodman (Guitar), Trumpets - Matt MacLean, Ryan Brower, Jesse Malone, Marie Gaudy, Trombones - Steve Ward, Robin Jessome, Aidan Sibley, Josh Bird, Saxophones - Taylor Cook (Alto), Brendan Cassidy (Alto), Rob Christian (Tenor), Dave Rubel (Tenor), Anthony Rinaldi (Baritone).

"This is the only recording I have of this arrangement and it may have some clipping, etc. It's a pretty decent recording for a handheld recorder so hopefully it suffices...It's a little hard to recognize but the intro is straight from the source track as well (the second half of the melody). I also added a shout chorus featuring a bunch of other Mario melodies. I hope you all like it!"

Badass performances abound, but I gotta give a mad shout out to Mr. Rinaldi on that Bari - mean stuff. What I love about this arrangement is the authenticity: it feels like it's from a different time period, and the part-writing is thoroughly believable. Mr. Luers writes:

"I I think this is really charming. The atmosphere is great, and for a handheld recorder there is a nostalgic, warm sound to everything. Arrangementwise, there is enough dominant source, and plenty of interpretation. Some nice solos (your bari player is a monster), and everything clicks. The drum solo was a little bit self-indulgent, but I can dig it."

Cain adds:

"This is a very clever arrangement. Some very nice work done on the rhythm of the melody and the dabs of new harmony fit nicely. Nothin' wrong with a bit of self indulgence in jazz. Also enjoyed the inclusion of the underworld theme. The recording quality including the random dudes talking just add to the charm of a big band, it feels like you're there watching it there in a small cosy club. Nice stuff all around and look forward to more subs from you guys."

Excellent, very charismatic stuff from the R5 and the University of Toronto 10 O'Clock Big Band!

So much win in that bari solo. It's so cool when you get the collaboration of so many talented musicians to dedicate some rehearsal and performance time to VGM.

Man, this really sounds like something out of a club. Charming and with the background talking, makes it feel almost like you're there. Can't do much about some of the production on these live "one shot" ReMixes, but I still think the audio held up well. Nice and swanky and lives up to the big band sound. About the only thing I wasn't crazy about with the drum solo. Got a tad bit carried away, but oh well. Nicely done, y'all earned another pint of Amsterdam.

Production issues are forgivable here -- fantastic arrangement and performance. This would have been right at home in a 1940s gala.

I'm a huge fan of big band/swing and jazz in general- coupled with this me being my favorite Mario 64 this just tops it off as one of my favorite Mario 64 remixes ever. We SO need more jazz mixes.

Nice arrangement. The clapping and talking in the background really adds to the atmosphere.

I'm not too hot on the drum solo, though. The bari one was cool, but the drum solo was just a little bit too self-indulgent.

I sure hope this site gets more live jazz submission in the future.

I think OA said it best - this is so very charming. The live warm sound and background chatter ("another pint of amsterdamn...") fit so well. Gems like these make the world go round.

Hey, great rendition of a classic track. Mario 64 has a special place in my heart as the first "3D" game I ever played and music, for me, is instantly recognoisable since I played the game so much ... :) . I really dig the real instrument mixes, especially jazz, which lends itself particularly well to this (there's a lot of personality that comes through in the solos and whatnot).

My only "complaint" is that the audio sounds a bit washed out, but not much you can do about that (at least without haven't professional recording equipment and whatnot). Either way I LOVE the arrangement and the solos are a nice touch :) .

This is a really fitting piece for this time of the year - jazz band stuff really works well here. Been listening to this on repeat for the past few times while wrapping Christmas presents and figuring out a surprise for the OCR goers to MAGFest.

There is a slight bit of sloppiness found here and there, but it's a live performance that's largely well done. Arrangement-wise, I can't say I really have much to complain about, and the recording quality is pretty good which is a huge plus. I hope more live jazz stuff makes it to OCR, it's always a pleasure to listen to this stuff.

This site needs more live jazz. I love all the background stuff going on, and you feel like you're really in a club listening to this. Your recorder did a pretty kickin' job, I'm impressed.

Props to the bari, he's got some nasty chops.

Well this blows my jazz arrangement of this theme completely out of the water. (Which is probably a good thing, seeing as how I was most likely never going to finish it.)

What can I say? I gave it a standing ovation. :D

WOOOO! This is so optimally great. Big band-style jazz is one of my favourite musical genres, and this is just totally excellent! I love the really jammy feel of this, too. The source is there for sure, but all the flourishing solos going on all the time make it feel so much more like a huge jam session of awesomeness. Also, mad props to all in terms of soloing, everything sounds greeeeeat!

Great job guys, I've been to a few big band jazz concerts and everything about this felt the same way I did at those concerts. Solos were great, wasn't really feelin the drum one though. I've been wantin to get into creating jazz pieces and I'll be using you guys for reference. Great remix guys!
