Man, it's xmas eve already... how time flies! Anna's been wrapping gifts and I've been troubleshooting Windows Server 2008 error messages (oh, fun!), but I had to make some time to post this Willrock ReMix from Virtua Fighter & Virtua Fighter 2. In over ten years, this is somehow our very first mix from Sega's iconic Virtua Fighter series, which set the stage for numerous 3D fighters to follow. Mr. Harby writes:

"I have been a virtua fighter fan for many years now, and the music in the first 2 games always seemed outstanding to me, particularly Akira's theme in both games.

I have always wanted to take both themes and put them together in a remix, as I always thought that the two themes together seemed to complete each other, like the 2nd akira theme was a direct response to the first. As far as arrangement and production have gone, I wanted to achieve an old school 80's wall of sound and for the arrangement, I have dulled down the original sections that were often in my older remixes and put more effort into messing around with the sources - and there is plenty in the two sources I have chosen. Anyway, this is the result, I hope you enjoy it :P"

This is some high-octane 80's synthpop, as advertised, with a lot of emphasis on the synth lead melody. My absolute favorite bit is the intro of the alternate, oscillator-sync'd lead at 2'55" - it dips down, bends back up, LFO vibratos, then just starts getting brilliantly spastic and laying down the smack. Might be Willrock's best synth solo yet, and it's definitely my personal favorite. Interestingly, I caught the same Van Damme vibe that Vinnie did:

"Definitely hit that 80's sound with the heavily reverbed drums. You can imagine this playing in Bloodsport or one of those badass movies from the 80's that inexplicably had soft rock songs on the soundtrack."

Judges did agree that this didn't represent a huge step forward from Will's previous mixes, but hey - those were some pretty damn good mixes! I think the artist went for something a bit cheesier & more gung-ho power-melody here, and while it's probably true that he could have been a bit more daring, it's got baller synth solos that conjure the fighting spirit, and that makes me happy. Plus, we finally got some Virtua up in this joint, and that can only be good. Of course, until Virtua Hamster is ReMixed, I won't sleep easy... but this is at least a start, and a darn good one.

When I first saw this track, I thought "What is this title, dude", but then I clicked on video and was like "Aha, I see" :D

Very neat track. Super digging the slightly dark and tense atmosphere. It's classic WillRock goodness, so nothing to complain about. Pounding drums, some piano bits here and there, and, of course, top-notch synth work - really love those crazy solos towards the end. Nice one!

Romanization of Japanese is a bit tricky and occasionally open to interpretation. But it's no where near as bad as the Hanyu Pinyin system of Mandarin Chinese. Really it doesn't matter much anyway because native Japanese have trouble keeping a common roman spelling for many words.

Yes there could be a y in jyuu, if you were typing Japanese on a keyboard you would have to use the y to get the right kanji because the kanji is read as "jyu".

The u at the end of yo is a mistake.... unless you were elongating the "o" sound. Alot of spoken japanese in various manga is written that way.

So it's legit.

More sega related remixes please!

the romaji, hiragana, and kanji should be written as such:

"Jyuunen Hayainda yo!" (spacing is subjective.)

I just looked it up, can't find there being a Y anywhere in juunen. according to the virtua fighter wiki, tv tropes and everything else, its spelt Juunen. If I type in jyuunen on google, it suggests a spelling change to juunen even. Obviously I can't really question you on this properly since I don't know the language so you could be right, but if you are i'm surprised the entire internet has got it spelt wrong :P

Spacing seems very subjective, TV Tropes for example spells it Juunen Hayainda da yo.

The most common spelling I can find seems to be Juu'nen Hayain da yo, with an apostrophe after the two u's but it doesn't seem to be there in all the spellings of it I can find.

Overall, massively subjective stuff here.

The u at the end seems to be a genuine mistake on my part doing a bit more research - could be changed I suppose if you want to be pedantic about the spelling, but it could be a mix quirk for you guys :P

The next time OCRemix does a full update on their tracks and adds the next segment of torrents, the title of this remix needs to be edited.

I'm not sure if anyone else has pointed it out, but there are a couple mistakes with the romaji.

The translation I believe I'm supposed to be getting from the title is (something along the lines of) "10 years too early (so get on my level, sucka)."

In which case, the romaji, hiragana, and kanji should be written as such:

"Jyuunen Hayainda yo!" (spacing is subjective.)

じゅうねんはやいんだよ!

十年早いんだよ!

Ten, or "jyuu" is composed of hiragana "ji," small "yu," and "u," so the y can't be left out. Also, the "yo" at the end I believe is intended to be used for stating new information or information that one would not expect to be already known, in which case it would not include the long vowel with the extra "u."

Or perhaps everything I just said you already knew, and the spelling of the title was intentional.

Either way, it's a great mix.

Dude, I could totally hear this in bloodsport or kickboxer or something of the like. And thank god for the voice sample in the beginning because I wouldn't be able to pronounce the title. Terrific work with the synth and drums, you got my love for 80's just a-going. Nice work, WillRock.

This is easily the most overlooked of my remixes posted on ocr, which is a shame to me.

Is it the game choice? Is it the remix name? Or were people turned off by the vocal sample in the intro? Who knows, but some of you downloaded and liked it, which puts a smile on my face :)

It is the game choice. This is my absolute favourite ReMix of yours. I think it just comes down to 'if it ain't Zelda, FF, or Mega Man', then anything gets overlooked. But man, Akira's theme is my favourite track from VF2 in the first place, and this very much sounds like a massive expansion on the original.

You should be goddamn proud of this mix :D

Anyway, this was another mix showcasing my synth/rock style I started with my "Mountain Of Dreams" mix.

The rough draft of inspiration for this mix was listening to A-ha. Not going to say the song, otherwise you'll all cry out that i'm a plagiarizer. Probably ;)

That said, as far as this mix goes, I started to recycle old ideas from passed remixes and throwing them together, and didn't really expand here, which was a personal choice - I was happy with were I was at for the moment, but the judges started pushing me for more development - just check the decision thread ;)

SOOOOOOOOO - nothing new and exciting here, but that really wasn't the point. I wasn't trying to expand, I was just doing what I enjoyed here, and I'm glad you guys enjoyed it all the same :)

Definitely getting the 80's vibe, though it doesn't really remind me of training montages or anything of that kind. To me, it sounds like a song from a cheesy SciFi B-movie. Which I enjoy.

Good choice of synths. Nice work.

This is an amazing song. The piano intro is so... DAMN! I get so excitedwhenever I listen to the intro. It gives off a deep vibe that leads perfectly to the training montage feel of the rest of the song. Your best yet.

Great training montage music- I listen to this track while running through the Siberian tundra training for the epic fight. I know that my opponent has a state-of-the-art training facility, and all I have is a remote cabin and miles of snow, but I will prevail but sheer will! Sheer Willrock!

Good mix, dude!

Classic Will as Mr 99 pointed out. *smiles* Always nicely arranged stuff- good synthy choices, loads of reverb ^w^, kick-ass solos and generally fun.

However, being honest, his newest stuff really outdoes this. (Not to remove from this success.)
