Arranging the music of 2 songs...
"Sueru Mountain ~ Gran Mountain ~ Rolsa", "Sunset"
Primary Game: Rygar (Tecmo , 1987, NES), music by Michiharu HasuyaPosted 2010-04-03, evaluated by the judges panel
Rygar! Vurez! We've been holding on to this track for a while, since it was originally going to coincide with an album release the ReMixer was working on, but we were recently given the green light to just go ahead and post it. Don writes:
"This particular song is done in the style I'm probably most known for. The small vocal section and whistling were recorded by me. The rest is samples."
Funny thing is, the style here doesn't particularly remind me of Don's other work, although I suppose it is similarly quirky. Sample quality, especially with the intro brass, is actually not as polished as some of the artist's other mixes, but the judges agreed that the versatility and playfulness of the arrangement compensated. OA writes:
"Arrangement was fun and varied, and the guitar in some sections was exceptionally well sequenced. Flute sounded good too, nice work there. Vocal section was fun and somehow fit. I can dig it. Production was a style that we don't hear often, but was effective. Some sections did seem a bit empty, but it just gave things room to build on."
AnSo adds:
"I have to agree with OA that the track would've sounded a bit stronger overall without the intro but I'm willing to overlook that. Why? Well because the rest is pretty damn cool. The arrangement is great and there's definitely many cool ideas floating around."
I'm honestly used to Vurez mixes sounding a bit slicker, but I think any time you do isolated ensemble brass - especially as an intro - you're running some risks. This strikes me as a mix that's supposed to be more than a little goofy/cheesy, especially with the whistling/dum-dum vocal sections followed by an almost Sousa-esque carnival march - would have loved a tuba part, there :) I think it's really more of a concept piece, and while Don's submission email doesn't tell us much about what he was shooting for, I'm gonna go out on a limb that the intro brass is primarily provided as contrast to the spaghetti rock motif that it transitions into, and the overall arrangement is intentionally cartoonish and stylistically schizophrenic. At some points it sounds like Rygar's out in the wild west with Clint, at others as if he's one of a dozen clowns coming out of a tiny car, and overall I'd say that if this is his anthem, he's a pretty diverse dude who gets around a lot. Strange, quirky, diverse ReMix from Vurez that's stronger on arrangement than production, but has charm to spare.

Super creative ReMix and very fun to listen to. Nice orchestral intro to throw me off at 0:27 with this western arrangement. Now I can only picture Rygar wearing a cowboy hat.

I have to say it, I love this ReMix for how different it is. The grand little intro switching to the more zany western sound was interesting. The whole ReMix has a bouncy weirdness to it, and it's unique. The vocals and whistling wouldn't have worked in my opinion if this ReMix wasn't so wacky to begin with, but because it is, it worked perfectly. This ReMix is charmingly goofy.

Wow, I really loved the buildup in the intro, and the swift transition around 0:30 seconds. Really an attention grabber. Also enjoyed the wide range of samples featured in the arrangement, really kept me on my toes. The vocal bit and the whistling might not have been the strongest part of the mix, but they were certainly unique and enjoyable.

I love this mix so much, you have no idea. It's so much fun and so wacky. I love every moment of it. I tried convincing a friend of mine to fit it into a play he was doing for a youth theatre festival, just because it's so much fun. The whistling and vocals around 2:14-2:40 make for my favourite part of the piece.

Not a huge fan of the intro. Mind you, it's not because of the arrangement. THe orchestration is beautiful. However, the programming is a little rough throughout. Thus is the downfall of sequenced brass. Interesting sound overall for this mix. Very dry and open, but even after a 4 year hiatus, Don is still giving us mixes with crazy different influences of genres, instrumentation, and arrangement ideas. The whistling and vocal section was an interesting idea, and in a very weird way, it works exceptionally well with the hammer dulcimer. This is something I heard when I used to watch kids shows like Barney when i was younger. Not bad at all. I can't wait for Don to submit some new pieces!

Definitely. This one has got some swagger. It reminds me of so many different games and movies it just makes a guy smile. I love it.
Excellent job!

Fun romp through a variety of styles. The beginning almost sounds like something you'd find in a movie about the roman empire, while the next part definitely screams "western". Mix in some medieval, 16-bit RPG-sounding tunes, a bunch of fun vocals, some asian flavor, and you have quite an enjoyable remix.
Nice work.

A really strong arrangement, and a great treatment of a solid source theme, it sounds like there's some live trumpet in this too, but I could just be fooled by some super sequencing skills.
I'm still not super down with the intro, but the rest of this is excellent. Great work!

Haha, this put a nice smile on my face. Rygar meets Ennio Morricone. Very fun, and not the easiest source material to work with. Good job.

I've always wanted to mix this tune, but never had the balls.
Nicely done, I enjoyed this very much.

I remember Rygar, and this is actually the only song that comes to mind. I really enjoyed this remix quite a bit actually. It gives me that feeling like I'm watching an old western with John Wayne. Great job, Vurez. Also, just pointing out this is the first review I've ever done on OverClocked ReMix.
