Hey, Red Dead Redemption may be all the buzz right now, but back in the 16-bit days when we wanted to get our Eastwood on, our good, bad, & ugly was Sunset Riders, Konami's kickass side-scrolling tale of justice, grit, and ridiculously bright-colored outfits. With Steve, Bob, Billy, and Cormano - who was either groundbreakingly inclusive or an offensive stereotype, take your pick - the wild west had never before been depicted in such vivid magentas, yellows, pinks, and greens. Multiracial hue-tastic affair or not, the game was FUN, and had some kickin' tunes that, thanks to Dr. Manhattan, are finally represented here on OC ReMix. He writes:

"I used the same brass samples as in Hydrocitiy's Nightclub... but dont be mad at me guys! Hahaha!"

Hahaha indeed; guitar DOES outshine brass, but this mix just wouldn't have been the same WITHOUT some blowin' horns, and the tongue-in-cheekiness of it all actually works just fine with less-than-believable, refried brass. Right out of the gate, the intro "Ride 'em, Cowboy!" sets the mood, and rolling chugs establish a galloping pace. But what's that at 2'33"!?!?! Vinnie says:

"Love the name of this song, and I think we have some rule on the books that any song with a reference to the Mexican Hat Dance is an auto-pass."

That's Jarabe Tapatío to you, hombre. Note to Self: Update submission standards to accordingly feature "Mexican Hat Dance" auto-approval clause. Calamity ensues; Cormano approves. Right BEFORE said homage there's a screamin' guitar solo, and the overall arrangement is basically a musical jalapeno - hot & spicy & a lot of fun. Reminds me a bit of 'El Lagarto' (an absolute must-listen if for some reason you haven't!) in terms of energy & affect. All of Dr. M's stuff has been great so far, but this one gets an extra-special tip of the sombrero for doing something different, doing it well, and clearly having a blast in the process. Somewhere out there, in the friscolating dusklight, Cormano rides on, continuing to deliver his unique brand of bearded, Mexican justice, with this mix as his personal soundtrack...

Nice intro. Love the horse riding feeling of the beginning that branches out into solid rock. Keeps the classic feel together while upping the intensity, which is awesome. I really like the change up after the second minute that almost sounds like something that would be played on a train level (never played the game, so I don't even know if there is one). When I first heard this, I didn't have the write-up in front of me, so the Mexican Hat Dance caught me off-guard and got me laughing like an idiot. Lots of great humor and terrific playing in this one. Downloading this one for sure.

This mix sticks fairly close to the source and manages to do great justice to the source. So much energy and life in this track. Dr. Manhattan brings somes some rockin' fun to great soundtrack. Humour, energy and drama are all here. The arrangement is really well put together and the performance is top notch. Fans will adore this and those unfamiliar with the source will have great difficulty not wanting to check the game out after hearing this.

Ehy I remember that from DoD-2009-05! It was an alternate, and I never played Sunset Riders, but I liked it ^^

Also, that was the DoD (the only one) where I submitted a song of mine :P

Nice use of drums to evoke that certain western feeling. Same goes for the guitar around 2:00 until the solo. Vocal samples were used quite aptly, too, and the Mexican Hat Dance part is plain awesome.

I do agree with one of the previous poster in that the remix could've used a bit more variation, especially in the last part.

Overall, this song is a quite enjoyable experience.

Haha that brass sticks out like a sore thumb!

Otherwise, really love the western vibe going on in this song - Dr. Manhattan really shows off his versatility musically with the electric guitar. Unfortunately I never played the game, so I missed out like Stevo :-( .

That Mexican Hat Dance part caught me off guard - didn't really read the writeup that much this time, so that quick bit provided some mild amusement.

That was the most fun that I've had while listening to a remix in a long time. Dr. M, I truly think this is your best yet. And I just know I'm gonna be replaying this cut for the rest of the week. Ride'em, cowboy!

Man, I've never heard of this game before, and now I feel like I missed something incredible growing up. My poor childhood ;_;

At this point, I'd be very very surprised if Dr. Man-Hat-Anne,MD, made a song that I didn't enjoy. This is absolute DRIVING music, or if you have a horse, RIDING music.

There were parts where I feel more could be going on, and more interpretation would have suited (particularly the semi-inactive second verse and the section right before the solo), but everything else besides that is beastly. Even those two problem sections detract from the song as whole, and the guitar tones you used throughout made my pants a little tighter than usual. The twangy clean-crunch...I want that setting. And I want it RIGHT NOW.

I'm aware of the issues the J's bring up about the brass samples, but they're not the spotlight of the mix anyways, and simply because their timing and velocity is dead-on, I find myself enjoying them a lot.

Also, Mexican Hat Dance = awesome. Caught me off-guard, almost dropping my Chihuahua, my Burrito. I'm doomed if it caused my bandoleer to come loose!

Fantastic song, and you better keep making them. Or else I'll go hire Lee Van Cleef to keep you in line!

Haha! Wow, thank you guys! 3

Like to most of you, this is like the soundtrack of my childhood. Sunset Riders soundtrack is one of my favorite ever, along with Sonic series. I am actually surprised that i didnt heard nothing really outstanding from this game before.

I did had a lot of fun recording this track. And I'll bring more of them as soon as I can (i think i got some ideas already).

I am trully happy to know that the song grew on you guys as much as it did on me!

Again 3

I was never into cowboys so I didn't play this growing up, so I have no idea what the source tune sounds like: I'm just going to tackle the remix as its own standalone music.

Uhhhhh.... yeah. I've got nothing bad to say :D True to form for the musical genre, the little vocal samples you put in are fun without being gimmicky. The Hat Dance portion made me lol.

Yup, that's about it. Good stuffs all around. I'd say it was a bit repeditive, but you are covering a NES soundtrack, in which tracks were notoriously short, and you kept it interesting throughout. And again.. Hat Dance love.

Okay, one minor criticism. I wish on your last hit at the very end that you had mixed in that morricone-esque twangy guitar a bit louder. Yup, that's it.

I love Sunset Riders and have always thought the music was one of the best parts of it. I love this remix. It makes me wanna turn on my SNES and play!
