Apparently when life gives you lemons, you make Zelda mixes: Hylian Lemon, aka Benjamin Hoffman, recently released The Legend of Zelda: Essence of Lime (forum thread), which he describes as follows:
"Essence of Lime is an unofficial remix project covering the soundtrack of The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. The album clocks in at over 2 hours, with 2 discs and a 2-year development. Any music that appeared in Ages has been remixed, including tracks that appeared in both Oracles...Two years ago, I decided to start Essence of Lime as a solo project (hence the citrusy pun), assuming there would not be enough interest to carry a full-scale project. I was slightly wrong about the lack of interest; as I continued chipping away at the tracklist, people began to ask if they could help out. I opened up the project, realizing that I had a lot a work ahead of me. I'm incredibly grateful to those people (as well as the people I managed to recruit) for their help and enthusiasm."
To clarify, this isn't an official OCR album, although there are some great tracks from some familiar faces. To further clarify, when opening up solo projects to the community, it's my personal preference that directors do target releasing as an official project, because it lets us do our thing and ensures a certain level of quality, coordination, promotion, etc. - the more you know... This particular track, which shares its title with the overall album, is also Hylian's debut here on OC ReMix. He adds:
"This is the first track I started for the album project of the same name. I originally wanted to try something along the lines of Paper Mario, but I ended up going more of a chiptuney route. Hopefully I've still captured some of the epic quirkiness I'd intended.:
Definitely feeling the quirky, chiptuney vibe, and kudos in general for shining more light on the Oracle of Ages OST; Link's Awakening tends to get all the handheld Zelda love, so it's good to see it get spread around a bit more. Larry writes:
"Props on coaxing the musicality out of these themes. If anyone thinks the arrangement is scattershot, it IS, but that's because the structure of the source tunes, particularly the intro, are the same way. I thought some of your other non-chip tracks on the album could have been further polished, but the potential is clearly there and you're way ahead of the pack. As I said in #j, if you keep at it, you'll be consistently putting out high quality stuff without thinking. This is a great debut, bro, keep 'em coming!"
Shariq adds:
"I dig the orchestral/chip blend. A nice full texture with lots of awesome syncopated bits. Great job adapting the source into such a groovy piece of work."
Well said - check it out, and check out the other tracks available on the album at http://essenceoflime.revasser.net/!

Gotta echo the others in saying that the mix between electronic and orchestral makes this a pleasant ReMix to listen to. Those bongos, though, has to be my favorite part of the this track. Lemons, Limes, not always sweet, but this ReMix is. Great debut.

There`s a nice balance between mellowish orchestrated strings and more electronic chiptunage!
The flute being exchanged for main lead occasionally keeps the synths from feeling repetitive, bland, or a lack of consistient mood or theme.
Not that it would have been in any danger of that, even without.
It actually reminds me of a weird popcorn flavor I ate a month ago...salt + lime, obviously.
In short, this is just the kind of stuff I`ve been looking for! It`s playful, familiar, and fun. And ``scattershot`` arrangements add the kind of edge I always like.
They're totally my kind of fun, but only when well-fleshed out; which you accomplished with creative beauty and flair. I never felt like you didn`t know
exactly what you`re doing and where you`re going with this piece.
My only complaints are:
1. I wish the uber-cool set of (jungle-style?) drums had come in sooner than just shy of a minute left D: . It freshens things up and gives it such a cool and unique groove. One of my favourites, in fact. They go amazingly well in eclectic remixes like this. And,
2. The sound quality of the strings and drums hinder it. I think the whole piece would sound bloody amazing if it were at a higher level. Like, epic!
Anyway, this is going on mah playlists like you won't belieeeeve.

Pretty fun stuff, I really liked the progression of this one, and the mix of instruments was refreshing.
I second all of this; especially the choice of instruments and the way the chiptune elements are integrated into the remix stand out to me. The "breakdown" starting at 2:10 is my favourite part of this song.

Big time congrats on the release of your album Hylian Lemon! You and your group have worked very hard. EoL still remains at the top of my iPod's playlist to this day (WIP all).

Now that you're posted, it's hard to complain about you not being posted.
The most common complaint on the site, bar-none. But reaching that point where the complaint becomes invalid is a sensation all the sweeter.
This track is fantastic, through and through. The style you did this in, which is also a style pervasive in nearly the entire album through all your songs, is simultaneously nostalgic and fresh. You pick your sounds very well. Perfect track to kick off a great album.
I don't know how you did so many great tracks over those two years on top of this one, but my hat is off to you. I never played the original but I'm still diggin' this. Congratulations, you lemon-lime non-carbonated beverage.

ZESTY. One of my favorite mixes from you, you employ the chip elements so well, it gave me strong PEELings. Glad yours was posted first, putting you in the LIMElight. CITRUS.

Pretty fun stuff, I really liked the progression of this one, and the mix of instruments was refreshing. The tempo transition stuttered for just a second, but otherwise, this was solid stuff. Great rhythms, nice panning, and a good pace.
Recommended!

A great debut track, good introduction to a very cool album! Congrats!

Thanks, everyone! I wasn't expecting such a unanimously positive response. Gotta thank the people on the WIP board/Rozovian for helping me out.
Nice job catching the slightly obscured Zelda theme reference I missed, LT/Palpable. I surprised myself a couple times while writing up the source breakdown; I'd taken for granted how much source I'd actually used. "Wait a second...this part isn't original??"

easily one of the best debut mixes I've ever heard
you did your thing and you did it very very well

Hearing this gave me an extreme sense of nostalgia. I liked the arrangment and sound effects that were there.
