Arranging the music of one song...

"Main Menu"

Primary Game: Scribblenauts (Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment , 2009, NDS), music by David J. Franco

I'm posting this from our hotel room on the beautiful garden isle of Kauai, where from our balcony we can see palm trees, surfers, and the vast, expansive Pacific. Yes, I'm posting video game mixes on my honeymoon - let no one question my commitment to OverClocked ReMix. Or Sparkle Motion, for that matter. I'm glad we're specifically getting a mix from 5TH Cell's Scribblenauts, courtesy ProtoDome, but am also generally happy to see more focus on newer games, unmixed games, and handheld games, three categories it happens to fall under. Blake writes:

"Ah, thought I’d go halc and try something other than Nintendo (mainly Pokemanz) for a change, although I really can’t escape from my IV, iv chord resolutions. Man, I am so unoriginal. The Scribblenauts soundtrack (if you’ve ever listened) sounds like it wants to go all glitch in various places so I thought I’d extend on that. Hope u liek Chiptune... OH! PS! Props to WILLROCK for the awesome song title."

Ah, Mr. Harby... your shenanigans do not go unappreciated. This is definitely some chippy, chipper chiptune, with dominant percolating melodies peppered with breaks, bits, gates, fx (SMB death sound?), vox samples, and all manner of modulated joy. The actual melody itself reminds me of some of Bo's early SEGA stuff, all of which I love, and the treatment/interpretation is chiptune maximalism, first class. OA writes:

"The name is a bit meta, but that is part of the charm. I don't think many other game sources could work with the name. The arrangement is quirky and fun, and though I feel that a lot of the sounds used sounded the same as the game synths, there are a few spots where it is well beyond the DS sound chip's level. I think it was pretty cool and fun.

yes to NO (resub)."

Resident "youthful curmudgeon" Vigilante adds a dash of sarcastic approval:

"I'm not sure you have enough stutter edits in here. Can you maybe resubmit it with twice as many? I'd like the waveform to look like someone tapping out morse code. YES."

... just WATCH us now get a submission that spells out "F^&* THE JUDGES!" in morse code using stutter fx, for all those with too much time on their hands to lovingly decipher. At any rate, while the original may be retro to begin with, Blake's really dressed it up to the 9-bits, and composer David Franco's melody is well-deserving. Get your scribble on in style w/ more great stuff from ProtoDome.

Chippy goodness and a title full of fun, this is without a doubt a happy ReMix that may brighten up your day......if you can get past the voices. I liked them, but I can see how they may get on some nerves.

I simply had to join OCR to comment on this mix. I had been thinking about joining, and this one made me. I love this song! Its bright, chippy sound just oozes with charm, and the voices are a nice touch. Great remix!

Happy, chippy feelgood song. Nice choice of sounds, and I, for one, enjoy the voice sample. It really adds a special flair to the song, making it almost sound like something from a Katamari Damashii soundtrack.

Thanks very much everyone!! ^___^

Also MasterUnderscoreYoshi, I've had a friend say exactly the same thing, so you're not alone there. Hoping to improve on that in later songs.

Ooh, sneaky key change!

I have to say, the level of detail is clearly evident and reasonably astounding in his remixes, and ProtoDome can easily be labeled as one of the best chiptuners out there. I'm blown away yet again.

Truly great work, keep it up.

I didn't really like this. Normally I am all over chip sounding stuff, and this style of processing and glitch work is also up my proverbial alley, but this just rubs me the wrong way. There's some synth or sample or something that is absolutely grating on me.

*Scrolls up* Oh, maybe that's the voice sample? Not sure, never played the game. Also, it doesn't feel like the mix evolves much during its course. I mean granted I have disliked other works for moving TOO MUCH or having complete shifts in direction, but this just sort of sits in its one happy little place and doesn't feel like going out anywhere.

Normally that would be fine, but with a mix this short to feel like it is repeating itself is just something I can't get over.

Still, it's pretty well constructed, the sounds themselves (other than that one sample/synth/thing) are good enough, I just wish there was a bit more direction to it.

Damn, that voice sample is wretched. I don't remember it being that annoying at first few listens, but maybe I was just awed by all the other great stuff going on.

Overall, very strong work.

Now I can be almost glad I bought the game. Awesome work as usual, Proto. I remember this from the WIP board, but it's nice to have a refresher.

I have a fetish for IV-iv resolutions, so this is ok in my book. :-D

It really does sound a lot like Halc's chippy work, combined with the chopped and screwiness post-processing of SGX. Moar, please.

I was hoping ProtoDome was going to release another mix, and it's a big improvement on an already good start.
