Ladies and gentlemen, mages and warriors, characters of all castes & creeds... I'm proud to announce the release of OC ReMix's 18th arrangement album, Final Fantasy V: The Fabled Warriors ~I. WIND~!!
Director Shariq "DarkeSword" Ansari kept this multi-album project dedicated to Nobuo Uematsu's score of FF5 under wraps until fairly recently, so I'm guessing this is a surprise for a lot of folks, but sometimes surprises can be good, or in this case, great. Check out ff5.ocremix.org for all tracks or just start leeching (and then seeding, please!) the torrent right now; I don't think you'll be disappointed. Shariq writes:
"Here at OCR, we've done some really great big projects (FF7, FF4, ToP/ToS), but I've always felt that with smaller albums, it's easier to maintain a consistent level of quality. At the same time, Final Fantasy V has a lot of wonderful music and it really deserves more coverage than it gets. I knew I wanted to do a Final Fantasy V album, but I didn't want to get into managing a massive, 4-5 year affair, sitting on finished music for half a decade, so I decided to zero-in on a concept that worked for me before in the Kirby's Adventure album: character themes. Looking at the game's job system and how the jobs were grouped by Crystal, I realized that it might be interesting to do a series of small albums instead of one large one; a small roster of remixers could really focus on the character theme concept, and we'd quickly finish and release each stand-alone album before starting the next, eventually providing coverage for a large portion of the original soundtrack. Listeners are treated to the music closer to when it's completed, and artists don't have to wait so long to have their music heard.
And let's make no mistake, folks: WIND isn't "disc one" of The Fabled Warriors. It's a wonderful, complete album that stands on its own; it sets the bar for the rest of the albums in the series, and each subsequent album—Water, Fire, Earth, and Dawn—will also be able to stand on its own. I hope you're all looking forward to hearing them as much as I am."
When Shariq first approached me about this whole "five album project" thing, splitting things up that way, I was actually against it, because I prefer the concept of a single, large, cathartic release. On hearing WIND, however, I can see that nine tracks is definitely enough to give the release some serious musical weight, and I'm interested in seeing how each successive album will compare - and contrast - with its predecessors. It's certainly a new release model for us, and for the record I still think it's very possible to maintain high quality on larger projects as well, but I think the key point is that DarkeSword is behind it, so you know it's gonna be excellent. The second album in the series, Water, is scheduled for Q1 of next year, so Shariq & co. will continue working away in the interim.
FF5 has a unique place in the compendium of Final Fantasy games and, correspondingly, their soundtracks. Since the original SNES game was never localized for English-speaking audiences, many of the OST's biggest fans were exposed through later versions or through emulation and fan translations. Nevertheless, OCR's seen eight mixes to date, prior to the release of this album, and music is the universal language and needs no localization... well, unless you're talking about Sonic CD, though I happen to love BOTH versions. But I digress; I'm thrilled that this game is getting more attention since its soundtrack holds its own amidst the spectrum of awesome composition Uematsu has released upon us over the years. Opening up the floodgates is the one and only Sixto Sounds with some rock/metal ownage of 'Ahead on Our Way' (aka the main theme of FFV); Shariq writes:
"Sixto was one of the first guys I asked to be on The Fabled Warriors. I knew I’d need a rockin’ intro to grab people right off the bat—something to make a statement about the quality they could expect from this album series. Sixto never fails to deliver in that respect. “The Path to Glory” is the theme of Bartz, Final Fantasy V’s main hero, and embodies his courageous spirit. Sixto’s soaring guitars and energetic synths really create a sense of adventure. A fantastic piece of music."
I was grabbed, and then rocked, and was definitely hyped for the rest of the album when the smoke cleared; great stuff from Juan, whose relatively straightforward rock treatment lets the major-minor moodiness and ultimate glory of this piece shine through. WIND may only have nine tracks, but hey, if they're all like this, I certainly ain't complainin'; check it out, check the album out, grab the torrent, and stay tuned for more debut mixes!

Sixto really does stand out to me as one of those ReMixers that are very consistant in how good their ReMixes are. The guitar playing was excellent, and both the arrangment and production are ace. Looking forward to hearing more from both Sixto and the rest of FFV.

Epic job! Download now.
One of my "tests" for a song being downloaded is if I end the song tapping my foot. I started this song tapping. Keep up the awesome work!

Another track where Sixto just goes nuts; I love it. Great take on the source, and very fitting as the opening of the album. The build-up is worth it, exploding in pure rock energies, and the whole track just rocks.
It's like a Stone Age roller coaster; fast and rockin'. Fantastic job! :3

Mmhm, kicks right off with a great intro. I especially love the high notes at 0:50 and 1:50. Starting at 2:22, there's a great build-up that doesn't disappoint.
Great mix. Definitely makes my playlist.

Reading WillRock's comment below got me thinking that he and Sixto should definitely collab...I'd love to hear their styles together. Great work, Sixto!

Man, does sixto ever rock our socks (and boxers?) off.
Love how this starts off by having a synthesizer tease us with the melody -- totally expecting the iconic sixto guitar to be the one wailing it out. (But, even the synth tease is pretty damn slick itself.) Then the man finally gives us what we've been waiting for... and quickly doubles it, leaving us drooling at the mouth with synchronized guitar/synth leads.
Oh yeah baby. \m/

The first time I listened to this, I was uninterested. I listened, thought "meh," and then moved on to the next track in the album. A little while later, I returned to this track and immediately wondered what the hell I was thinking. There was plenty of variety, energy, and picked up the melody very nicely.
In short, it's a great mix and I think I fell into some strange waking coma when listening to it the first time.

This is fantastic, and a great opening for The Fabled Warriors - Wind. You play that first track and your attention is immediately hooked by a rockin' rendition of the game's main theme. Epic.
I can't really think of much to say about it... it's Sixto. It's guitar. It shouldn't be looked over or skipped, regardless if one is familiar with the source tune or not.
And two days? Really?

Hm... it's hard for me to point anything out in particular.
Well, this song has Sixto written all over it... so I really don't know anything intelligent to say.
So I guess I will just say: Thanks for sharing this, you rock

Ah, Sixto. You seem to be at that point in an OCR "career" where you can now do no wrong, as long as you keep doing what you're doing. I mean, you've been there for a while, but for me this is where I would really say "Yeah, the past few Sixto mixes have been like this, and that isn't a bad thing!"
Really though, what to say about this. It's the sound everyone should know and hopefully love. Enough expression and interpolation and other big words so we know this isn't just a straight up rock cover, the arrangement works well enough, what else can someone say?
Oh, right. I liked this.

I knew I’d need a rockin’ intro to grab people right off the bat—something to make a statement about the quality they could expect from this album series. Sixto never fails to deliver in that respect.
Yes, this is pretty much the exact same thought process I had with having Sixto open on Summoning of Spirits. There's really no better choice of remixer to shred your listeners' faces off with and make an impact on them.
Juan as always embarks on a melodic voyage of soaring leads and chugging rhythm that puts him among the best of the best. Another great tune from this community's own personal guitar virtuoso.

Sixto has been a constant force at ocr since I joined, but 2010 has seen a decrease in the amount of mixes that have been posted of sixtos, so its nice to see a posting of his
Very very solid work, great pace, great arrangement, and the production is great. Sixto really knows how to maximize his sound, that guitar solo near the end really shines with just the right amount of reverb on it
My only two complaints are the synths which while good, don't quite fit with the style. Its hard to get fitting sounds with rock music as far as synths are concerned tho. I also feel that this mix plays it a little safe, its nothing we haven't heard before from sixto, but like I said we haven't heard anything from him in a short while so thats fine by me. I wouldn't mind seeing something different one day tho, just to see what he would do

Totally rocking! It's about damn time we've heard something new from Sixto, and this doesn't disappoint. Great guitar flourishes and a pretty driving pace keep it exciting, and good section shifts keep it interesting after the initial adrenaline wears off.
Very solid track.
