ReMix:Pokémon Red Version "Battle for the Badge" 4:10
By Fishy
Arranging the music of one song...
"Battle (VS Gym Leader)"
Primary Game: Pokémon Red Version (Nintendo , 1996, GB), music by Junichi MasudaPosted 2011-03-02, evaluated by the judges panel
The Missingno Flood continues! Cain's here to rock us like a hurricane, or at least a tropical storm with ambition, arranging Pokémon Red:
"When I auditioned for this track on the project I didn't even have the program I made it in, and it's taken me something ridiculous like 6 months to actually finish to the point where I was happy with it. It's one of those tracks you just kept going back to and giving it a complete haul over, then decided you preferred it the old way.
Anyway, about the track: It's a rawk mix, with the crazy (very hard to double) guitar tapping and the fast drums and the weird break down solo. All the lead guitars have been triple tracked for added oomph."
Fishy should really trademark "Triple Tracked... For Added Oomph!!" and just use that as his personal catchphrase... even in situations completely unrelated to music. This is more of a classic rock vibe; while it gets heavy at points, it's got a nice melodic emphasis, some proggish synth textures, and tones it down a bit for the ending. Larry writes:
"Oh man, this was sick. Definitely something Duelling of Duels-worthy in terms of great energy and performance skill. Good original writing for the intro up to :15. Compared to how thin the source tune was, there was a lot of expansion with the part-writing to supplement the verbatim melody. Nice usage of the machine-gun drums from 1:07-1:17; someone finally gets it right once in a while. I also loved the constant changes in the percussion writing; added great dynamics and evolution to the piece. Definitely weren't resting on your laurels there."
Reminded me at times of The Who, and Mr. Tamer is dead on about the drums - really excellent work, there. And this was submitted all the way back in 2007! The swift-recovering zircon, who cannot be kept down by mere physical ailments, adds:
"The overall mastering could be hotter as well. However, I think these minor issues are overshadowed by the high quality arrangement and generally strong production values. I liked the original additions and the thematic variation. The structure of the song flows well and there is high energy throughout without being overly repetitive. I'm impressed; good job."
Fishy's got his own style going, and because it's channeling a more 70's aesthetic, I'm a huge fan. Great addition to the Missingno lineup!

! Red, I choose you :u
Such a fun mix.
Nice build up to 0:57. My favourite parts are 1:57-2:17 (especially that tiny shift at 2:07 which makes it feel a bit bad ass) and 3:12-3:31. Calming outro! :3

I've always loved the Pokemon series, and it's unfortunate I haven't had the money to get Black 2. But that's besides the point. What really matters is this original soundtrack, something of a hard-rock improvement that could easily have beaten the rock remix found in LeafGreen and FireRed.
This remix simply builds continuously in adrenaline...and I love it. If anybody catches my drift, they will know where I'm coming from. It captures the mindset of the Trainer going for the Badge. It's an adrenaline-rushing fight that also has an element of cool and calculated. I don't know how else to say it.
Well done. That's all to be said.

I was too old to have appreciated the whole pokeman thing, I never played any of the games and only saw the tv show because of my baby brother. So I am not familiar with any of the pokeman music, but I really like this track. and all of fishys other tracks too!***

I listened to this track while in the shower this morning. It reminds me of how Pokemon Blue was the first game I ever owned as a child.

I'm not a big fan of heavy rock guitar mixes, but I have to love the variety of textures and rhythms Fishy uses here. Just when I think it's going to get boring, he changes it up with another awesome riff or drum pattern. Also, nice syncopation/juxtaposition of rhythms in some of the part writing that does feel proggish to me.

The build-up in the first few seconds was great. This really takes me back to when I first played the game. Drums sound great to me, and those guitars have the proper kick to give the song a lot of "battle energy". The nice bit starting from 2:00 was really enjoyable and I love the entire breakdown section. Very nice ReMix, Fishy.

Definitely a fun track! Takes me back to the first gym on pokemon red...good times. Except for better than the video game music back then for sure. Maintains the older feel while still being new, which I think is the purpose of any good game remix.
^^That's how you post your opinion on the remix (AKA relevant subject to this thread), everyone. That is not. Meaning I'll probably regret this when it's quoted and the bickering continues.

No, I think he made a valid statement. Hell, even Luke quoted it in agreement. Luke doesn't agree with anything. He once disagreed with the basic theory of gravity, and then floated to the ceiling just to prove a point.
You can't argue against a man that defies gravity just to spite you!

Jeez, next you'll be trippin' up in halc's grille with "wtf y r u usin' such lo-fi soundz bro, it's nawt the 80's lololo0lololo0l"
So, personally, i'm just going to delete all of the rock songs and keep everything else because there is a HUGE discrepancy in quality between these.
Lies.
What it basically all comes down to is a difference of opinion where the production is concerned. It was regrettable to say it should get a recount, but what I meant to say was, I don't believe tracks should wait on the panel for so many years. I don't think that's so unreasonable of an idea and I think some of the opinions concerning the production are valid and in the very least should be respected, even if you don't agree. Everyone's entitled to their taste in music + their opinion. I don't think anyone should hold a grudge over this difference of opinion. After all, djp always says "What did you think? Post your opinion of this ReMix."
And like I've said this is a fantastic arrangement and the song itself is really great. If nothing else, please respect and acknowledge that portion of my opinion. Thank you.
...psssst.... bonkers... no more flamering...
Shut the fuck up, Brandon.
Come on guy, you're representing OCR Staff now.. there's no need for such hostility.

I honestly have no idea what everyone is complaining about. This would pass now, it is still an excellent song. The arrangement is fantastic and while perhaps not as sparkly sparkly vampire as some of his newer stuff, the production is great. Awesome guitar playing, creative drum sequencing, what more do you want? Like Will I've STILL got this in my playlist from when I joined the project.

Hey fishy, if this was your first mix , then you've had Plenty of time to re-record it and not make it sound like poop.No excuses man.
Voices was released almost 4 years ago. That's plenty of time if you did this song before that.
And Level 99, It doesn't matter how hard anyone works on anything, if the end product sucks. It sucks. And if the judges are inconsistent and do terrible judging work of what "is" and what "isn't" good enough. Then that's what it is. It's not the first time.
The SAME standards for Rock tracks should be held the same as all the electronic songs and acoustic songs.
There is 0 reason for the production quality to be this low on any of the rock songs i've heard on this album.
Which is all of them. Especially this song considering who made it.
So, personally, i'm just going to delete all of the rock songs and keep everything else because there is a HUGE discrepancy in quality between these.
Some people think the only way they can communicate a point is by being a douchebag about it.
As it stands, we judge a track with the standards at the time it was submitted, and we have no need to re-judge things, especially because the standards aren't even markedly different than 2007. And there's no law saying he needs to re-record it, especially just because you're anal-retentive.
We don't have a double standard about genres, and while you can claim whatever you want, you're still a derp for suggesting that. As always, production's important, but arrangement is important as well, and there's a balance involved. This mix should be shinier and all that, but that doesn't preclude it from getting passed if the arrangement is very strong and creative, e.g. http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01221/

Would you mind not ranting at the judges in this thread? kthx
For the record, I would take this remix over my Voices one any day. Yes the bass sequencing is mechanical. Yes the drums are not the best.
However, the guitars (in both tone and performance) are easily still better then most of my modern stuff. That tapping stuff is sick, I can barely play it now. The arrangement just feels fun; it feels like I can hear myself enjoying the pokemon games all over this. So can the 80-something all positive responses I've gotten from YT people so far. I would rather have a fun and sincere arrangement with slightly dodgy production, then a boring arrangement of any quality.
If you're gonna rant about this being 'poop', I insist you go and do the same for my Voices mix. I hold them with the same regard.

So like, the arrangement is really good. The live instrumentation is well played. Transitions are good, no part sticks out like a sore thumb from one to the next.
I hope there's always a place for a good arrangement/performance. After all, The 6th track on Nevermind was recorded on a 2nd hand acoustic guitar held in tune by duct tape.
It's a shame about the furore since I've seen a couple great decisions that have picked out some amazing 'lo-fi' remixes.
http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01991/ is another fine example.
