Not enough SMW2 mixes, folks!!
World needs more of 'em. Even AFTER this spooky-funky chiptro mix by Insert Rupee, Mario's first outing on the SNES will STILL have twice as many mixes on OCR as its sequel. At least Ben & Drew have chipped in with an arrangement of the same theme that Palpable ReMixed back in 2007. The dynamic duo write:
Benjamin Briggs: "Very soon after starting this mix, we hit a brick wall and quit. A few weeks later Drew decided that what we had was good enough to finish up, and I (reluctantly) agreed. I'm glad I did, because what we ended up with here is pretty damn neat. I think the combination of electro/chiptune elements and gratuitous in-game sound effects all add up to a remix that pays tribute to "old school" OCR quite well. Hope you love it!"
halc: "I've always found it a little confusing as to why there are so few Yoshi's Island mixes on the site - the soundtrack is brilliant, and this theme in particular is definitely a favorite, so I'm glad we were able to give it some love. As Ben mentioned, finishing this one up was a bit of an uphill battle compared to our other collaborations (which for the most part have gone quite smoothly), but I love the way it came together; it's a chronicle of Yoshi and Baby Mario's perilous journey through Baby Bowser's fortress.. and the Boos are out for blood."
What Drew said; the source material is a breath of fresh air, because it's simultaneously a very familiar theme AND one that doesn't get much attention, like the overall OST. While Vinnie's take was electronica as well, the two arrangements are quite different; besides the aforementioned chippiness, there's more in-game FX here. If after playing the game you were haunted by the (...annoying?) cries of Baby Mario, well... Insert Rupee are here to haunt you some more ;) This mix is less about transformation into any sort of traditional electronica structures and more about embracing the sinister, careening jig of it all & unabashedly putting the in-game FX up in your business. DEFINITELY makes me wanna go back and play the game, which is always a compliment to the artists; VERY glad halc pushed towards finishing this ReMix, which is unique among their work & a great tribute to a great soundtrack!

This was really cool at first but it lost me somewhere in the middle; it stopped being as much fun to listen to.

Very nice fast tempo companion to Palp's downtempo take on the same theme. The usage of in-game FX is pretty cool indeed. All in all, classic Ben Drew collab, full of that quirky chippiness. Great!

This game was by far my favorite Super Nintendo game. I loved the music, the gameplay, and the story. Heck, at the time I even loved the graphics. I used to play that game over and over when I was little xD ah memories...besides that good job on the mix. I love the boos laughter and Mario's cry mixed in.

This song... is awesome. Fantastic usage of the Boo's laugh, and a great mix that works as a good counterpoint to Palpable's "In Pieces" in terms of style. Nice work, you two! :3

I find it amusing that those baby cries in the beginning sound similar to monkeys calling out.
I always welcome more Yoshi's Island love though - the Ben Drew duo does a solid job here, although I think some of their latest work trumps this. It's a fun short listen though, and I love the judicious use of the sound effects from the game. I think it would've been really nice if the Kamek then the miniboss themes were done afterwards, it would make for a sweet medley!

When I read djp's write-up, in particular the part about baby Mario's cries, I thought that the remix would annoy me out of my mind.
Turns out, it's not that bad. The sample fits right in with the rest of the remix, which itself does an absolutely amazing job at keeping true to the source material. The only part where the baby Mario sample becomes a little annoying is around 1:50, but even there, the slow move from left to right is rather awesome.
Good stuff, as usual.
Also, more SMW2 mixes, please.

I remember this as a WIP that Briggs pointed out to me when I said I hated the Zelda low heart and Baby Mario's crying SFX. Anyway, glad to see it pass the judges and hit the front page. Now I have heard two horrible SFX's put in great ReMixes, which is astounding. The middle section with the boos and count down was impressive. I think the chip-tuneiness keeps the charm of the original while expanding and reorganizing the sound. And yes, the site could always use more SMW2 ReMixes.

First Review!
Now that thats taken care of...Really enjoyed the mix; the style change at around 1:17ish and the time change at the 4/4 at the end really made it for me. Production and sounds are great (as always)and theres really no reason to not download this right now. Seriously. Do it.
Also, does anyone else think the intro sounds sort of like the Forest Temple from Ocarina of Time (namely 0:03 to 0:07)?
Anyways, great mix! Thanks for posting.

yes you arewe used some of the n64-era sound effects as well which were used in the GBA port of yoshi's island
The game in question is called Yoshi's Story. Cute game, if INCREDIBLY short and simple.
I've fallen in love with Insert Rupee all over again. I love Yoshi's Island as a game, and the music is to die for. WHY AREN'T THERE MORE REMIXES, PEOPLE?!

But I must ask, some of the sounds (Yoshi's in particular) didn't sound like they came from SMW2. Am I hearing correctly?

I'm impressed, as always. I still have a file from when it was a work in progress....
I particularly enjoyed the use of Boo and Yoshi sounds in the middle portion. And I also enjoyed the creative time change at the end.

Good work!
