ReMix:Streets of Rage "Groove On" 4:05
By ambient
Arranging the music of one song...
"Keep the groovin'"
Primary Game: Streets of Rage (Sega , 1991, GEN), music by Yuzo KoshiroPosted 2011-06-10, evaluated by the judges panel
It's been too long... Last we saw ambient was his Streets of Rage collab w/ Deia back in 2008. Well, he's back out and walkin' the Streets, and today's he's knocking on YOUR door to share the free good news... about Yuzo Koshiro. Mr. Gventsadze (glad I don't even have to TRY pronouncing that) writes:
"After a long break, here is another Streets of Rage remix. Once again, it's housey and dancey. Once again it's fun, or at least I think so. Whereas for all my previous mixes I always wrote a small essay in my submission emails, mainly because there was a bit of a back story to each one, this one doesn't really require one. It is just a remix that wrote itself and I had a ton of fun making.
[UPDATE] So this is a reworked version of the remix that got a No-Resubmit from the judges not too long ago. The two main gripes everyone had with it were the ear-piercing leads and over-compression. I do admit I went overboard on those, by cranking treble way too high on the leads, hats, and crashes, and by over-compressing the whole mix a bit too much. These issues are now fixed. In addition to the fixes, I have also made some small tweaks to the arrangement.
One more thing - I forgot to mention in my previous submission that some percussive elements in the mix are a tribute to Gecko Yamori's version of this track. Love his stuff."
I love GY's stuff, too, except he's a bastard for not submitting any of his more recent work... if you're bored, get on IRC and persuade him, k? This playful dance/house electronica groove definitely conveys the fun Alex had making it, with a four-on-the-floor kick pattern anchoring a deep bass, some layered perc fx & isolated/tweaked breakbeats maintaining rhythmic variety, and sex-machine-to-all-the-chicks wah-wah guitar licks. You're damn right. Vinnie's Big in Japan right now, but we can still quote him:
"Sooooo catchy. I love how Alex throws in these little details which only come up once or twice like the twinkling piano, but sound absolutely perfect."
Cain is still British:
"That lead is fun, it's super glissy in a good way like the one from 'Yeah Yeah', by Bodyrox. Highly catchy, as is this. Production sounds pretty hella tite. Like Vinnie says, lots of polish even on minor parts. Arrangement is aight. Not a huge amount to go in from the source but it flows along well with a sense of direction and purpose. Definitely more developed then the original, which is classy."
"Pretty hella" = somewhat badass. Both this mix & Will's really embrace the straightforward funk that Yuzo laid down back in the day, taking an ain't-broke-don't-fix-it approach stylistically while definitely adding their own angle. Considering Fallen Seraph's debut mix as well, 2011's proving to be an excellent year for Streets of Rage fans!

Groove on? Why not! Especially when the groove is extremely hard to be resisted. The excellent blend of phat beats, wah-wah guitar chops, some piano licks, tasty synths and breaks make this song probably my favorite from Alex. So sweet!

Whooo, sweet! Love how groovy this ReMix is, and especially the dirty bits in the middle before the "chikachickawah" breakdown. The energy is consistent and very danceable, and it's nice how you keep adding bits and pieces in as the song goes on. Never seems to get out of hand or boring. Very nice, indeed.

This does have a dancey house groove going on here as ambient mentioned in his submission comments. It's a fun mix, light and meant for dancing. I do wish the melody was a little more prominent early on though - it takes a tad longer to get into the meat of it than I'd like personally. The arrangement seems to be built pretty well regardless though, so it's hard to complain too much.

I remember some of your early works from around 2005-ish, and the production work on this one feels rather mint and more pristine than anything that I had heard from you prior to then.In regards to arrangement, it manages to chop up the source melody into something more developed and structure them in a way that retains the familiarity of the source but also forms the basis for interpretation along the way. The drum work at 1:25 was a huge highlight, showing some strong details with the gate work and switch ups during this transition.
This trick was repeated moreso past the 3 minute mark, though I may have to be blunt though that if it didn't happen there then the mix may somehow have outstayed its welcome. So I got to say nice call and solid work overall!
Assuming that you're coming over to London on Saturday, it'll be a pleasure to see you ambient
Thanks Rexy! Sorry couldn't make it to London that day. How did the meet up go? I will definitely make it next time!

I really enjoy the crazy filtering in this track that seems to alter the pitch a bit too, and the beat is nice'n'solidâ„¢. The breakdown section was awesome, and the melodic variation in the second half was welcome and interesting. Overall this is a good mix that is pretty capably handled.

Had me nodding my head and tapping my fingers within the first 20 seconds.
Breakdown around 1:20 is awesome. Guitar coming in at 1:50 brings the funk.
More of this, please.
