ReMix:Final Fantasy VII "The Planet Is Dead" 5:12
By Nekofrog
Arranging the music of 3 songs...
"From the Edge of Despair", "Listen to the Cries of the Planet", "Main Theme of FINAL FANTASY VII"
Primary Game: Final Fantasy VII (Sony , 1997, PS1), music by Nobuo UematsuPosted 2011-11-28, evaluated by the judges panel
This planet has ceased to be... it is an ex-planet. It's been awhile since we posted up some Nekofrog, but now Justin's back with some epic FF7 metal:
"Finished up production of this one in March of 2010, but sat on it for quite a while after that due to the fact that I intend for it to be a track on the Final Fantasy remix album I'm doing solo (a couple tracks from each mainline game). Finally decided the hell with it, and here it is. "You Can Hear the Cry of the Planet" has always been one of my favorite tracks from the FF7 OST, and when I started jamming along to it, the main riff for this pretty much wrote itself in mere minutes. It has a dash of Sephiroth in it, a pinch of the main theme (overworld), and a hefty helping of Off The Edge of Despair. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to music, but I wanted to throw something jarring in to avoid a straight up 4/4 time sig, so when OTEOD kicks in I decided to just play a random time sig that I made up on the spot (again, not musically knowledgeable so maybe you can tell me what the fudge it is). I just knew that it sounded pretty sweet, so I kept it.
Keep an ear out for a quick cameo from injury/starla who recites Aeris' final line of dialogue in the game."
Very cool; while the intro starts off with cleaner elec. guitar, relatively sedate, chugs enter at 0'39" and build to full on headbanging @ 0'50", setting the true tone. 3/4 works well for metal, especially with rhythm patterns that punctuate every passage with malevolent staccato pulses. Also interesting to hear some of the meter changeups; halc writes:
"not much to say. takes the conservative-expansive route, with some well placed cameos. excellent production, good transitions. maybe a touch hot on the highs, but its probably a personal gripe. no qualms here. as for the time-sig, the whole song is in 3/4, save for a few spots where it switches to 5/4 for just a measure. wasn't hearing any 4/4, so it looks like you succeeded."
Interesting, because I pesonally have an easier time counting the section at 3'58" as 4/4 than I do 3/4 or 6/8, but I suppose I can hear it both ways; YMMV. Definitely a good decision to mix up the time sigs a bit - even if Justin humbly professes a certain level of musical ignorance, the structure of the arrangement betrays a pretty intuitive grasp of meter, rhythm, and how the pieces all fit together. Plus it melts face, so there's also that ;)

it's a tape warbler and considering the title is "the planet is dead" it's supposed to sound depressing/forboding.

Not much of a fan of the weird guitar sound in the intro; reminds me of a cassette tape that's damaged.
Just like ryankeeton, I really like the wah parts around 2:45, and the "voice sample" following is a nice touch.
Climax around 4:50 is intense. Good stuff.

The guitar is simply outstanding here, you have to post your secrets
Seriously though, if you have any threads or posts on your guitar mixing, make me awares.
The section at 2.15 had brilliant soundscaping and meshed great with both the leads and rhythm you introduced.

Always glad to see more metal. I LOVE the clean intro with the additional guitars being layered in before the distortion. Great arrangement, blending the different themes. Nice drums, although the fill at 2:05 is kinda weird, the sequencing everywhere else is fine though. I like the little bit of wah during the break around 2:45. Nice spoken vocal cameo, worked nicely, good emotional touch. Good job!

OUTSTANDING remix.
I love how this is mixed. You threw heavy rock onto the source while still keeping its slow, eerie texture. This song makes me feel all kinds of disturbed, and I love. Tight palm mutes, also.
Love the Main Theme at 3:13. The voice clips are pretty symbolic and fit well, which is something that just seems silly in other remixes I've heard.
I give this mix an A+. The only complaint is that I like acoustic drums mixed a little differently, but it's negligible.

I had the version of his YT channel from quite some time ago.
There were definitely some improvements done between then and now. And the song is all the better for it. Nice work, man!

Didn't judge this one but it seems like a very easy pass. This is exactly how you blend multiple sources together; there was pretty much no moment where it was obvious you were switching sources. The time-sig stuff adds a lot of depth to what is already quire enjoyable. Loved the weird guitar effects in the intro.

Metal can be very hit and miss with me, this is no exception. I enjoyed it mostly. And all of the part including and beyond the Aeris snippet was perfection for me

Oh hey Justin goes through a deployment and gets back to a mixpost. The first thing that pops up is that the song sounds loud, and a tad overcompressed. Other than that, the song has a solid flow to it and as Justin said, wrote itself. There is a dark/depressing feel cast throughout the song which is nailed well - definitely reminds me of some death metal out there. This is a good full listen for the most part!
I don't compress any of my music. At all. D:
I literally record raw and that's it. I MIGHT adjust volume levels to prevent clipping but I never apply any post compression or EQ to anything.

Ah, good ol'metal. Great way to start the day. Very intense and flows really well over the course of the ReMix. Sweet cameo by Starla, too. The only thing that gets me is that the second guitar in the intro seems slightly-off, but that's just a minor nit-pick, cause everything else sounded great. Amazing ReMix here.

I never said anything was wrong with it, I just wasn't crazy about it the production. It's solid, for sure...some of the tones just aren't what I would have went with. Aside from the cymbals that have been pointed out, I just think the overall clarity is somewhat lacking IMO. But really, we all have different tastes in production in terms of what "sounds good". Hell, I know my stuff isn't perfect either.
Regardless, the track is killer.

What's wrong with the production?
Your cymbals are ducking harder than a carnival game, bro.

I think what's "wrong" is that people who aren't used to this particular style of metal think that guitars should be almost 100% high-end instead of the heaviness we know it should be via moderate mid-scooping, and kicks should be almost exclusively in the 250HZ range or something instead of that clickiness that's kind of important for the genre you're going for.
Good mix, btw. You really nailed it with this one.

Not crazy about the production, but I REALLY dig the arrangement of this, man. Very nice work. 9/10
