ReMix:Sonic the Hedgehog 2 "In the Robot Factory" 4:42

By Anti-Syne

Arranging the music of one song...

"Robotnik Battle"

Primary Game: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sega , 1992, GEN), music by Masato Nakamura

Anti-Syne (Jack Lewis) writes:

"I seem to be submitting tracks in pairs these days, first two from FF8, now two from Sonic 2. Well anyway, given this is a ReMix of Robotnik's theme, I thought I'd make it sound as Robotic as possible (genius no?), so it's full of distorted synths, mechanical sounds and heavy drums, to make it sound like (as the name suggests) it's in a factory."

Makes sense to me; interesting that Jack's paired up his first four mixes like this, and even more interesting that the two games have (more or less) nothing in common with one another. Statistical eccentricity aside, what's more important is that his initial batting average has been impressive, with some excellent arrangements, and this Sonic 2 dirty electronica track is no exception. This is a tougher source to handle and successfully convert into an extended "song form," but Jack's done a great job alternating between industrial/dubstep-ish harder sections and mellower r'n'b ballad, 808 bits, which creates solid development. OA writes:

"The source use is pretty cool slowed down like this, and there are a lot of nice ideas overall. Some of the verses sound a bit cut and pasted, even though they are really busy and planned out. The rest of the track is really fun and cool. The ending is slightly a let down, but isn't exactly sloppy, either, so I'm not sure what to think of it beyond that it could have been better. Could have used a little less SFX and more verse variation, but overall this one is a lot of fun."

I think I was digging this a little more than most judges; while I can see most of the crits as legit, they didn't bother me as much, and both the creativity of concept & aggressive, varied textures kept me glued. This wasn't a melody I would have expected to work as well in this context, and I think a lot of that is due to the artist's imagination & execution - also digging the heapin' helpin' of bitcrushery, generously applied to intro, outro, AND middletro. More great work from Anti-Syne as he goes 2-for-2 on Sonic 2 and 4-for-4 overall; looking forward to hearing what's next!

Badass remix... Probably my favorite so far, I find it quite original. The orchestration/arrangements are very well done. Dig the more mellow part with the soft electro drums. :-D

This is a very epic Industrial remix (both in the genre and literally industrial) and is also creative with the source. I like it a lot and think the remixer did an outstanding job with "Robotnik Battle".

This mix reminds me one of my favorites by Beatdrop, Final Fantasy 6 - Deserted Industry which came out shortly after i joined this website actually, haha.(http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00852). My expectations for mixes in this kind of variation is very tough. To say that i love it is an understatement. You did a great job with this mix and i'm looking forward to having it on repeat for some time in the future! Very well done!

I'll be honest, when I heard "industrial" my mind went to aggressive angry guitar driven metal with electronic bits in it. This, one the other hand, seems to be literally industrial in it's metallic feel. Both kinds are right up my alley, and this ReMix is outstanding! I can almost imagine the machines and pipes in the factory that Robotnik is in moving and making the song through their motions. Really cool and fits Sonic's arch-enemy real well. Anti-Syne strikes again!

This is chock full of a mechanical sound to it, showing itself to be an industrial song that doesn't use the low end as much as most songs in the genre, giving it a bit of a minimal sound to me. It also features some Sonic effects if I'm not mistaken.

The song does a pretty good job of keeping everything varied. Anti-Syne is starting to impress me more with his work, it really stands out as possessing good songwriting.

I dig it. I'm always a fan of the clunky, industrial noise genre in remixes, so thumbs up to you!

I can certainly dig this.

Brings back memories of djp's Da Factory Funk (More the theme than the melody I suppose).

Certainly sounds cool to me. I'm loving the electronica-dub step vibe. Can we have more like this please?

It's a sin that there aren't any more comments than this. I'm certainly diggin' it. Could always use more great Sonic 2 mixes.

I am going to have to disagree with the comments regarding the end, because I find it appropriate enough for it fizzle out like it did. Fit with the overall theme of the mix imo.

Certainly has a slow-paced industrial sound to it, reminds me quite a bit of the FF6 remix, 'Cid in the factory'. It transitions pretty well between synths, chiptunes, and the harder stuff.

I like it. :P
