ReMix:Final Fantasy VI "Ruffneck Terra" 4:42
By halc
Arranging the music of 2 songs...
"Awakening", "Terra"
Primary Game: Final Fantasy VI (Square , 1994, SNES), music by Nobuo UematsuPosted 2012-08-22, evaluated by the judges panel
As you may have seen on our homepage or corresponding announcement thread, our PREVIOUS kickstarter for physical copies of Balance & Ruin, an upcoming FF6 album directed by zircon & McVaffe (!!), was unfortunately cancelled due to technical issues on Kickstarter's end, after we reached an agreement with Square Enix. We were blown away by the support we received for this project, and we were heartbroken when we learned that, after going through a metric ton of draining, behind-the-scenes work, it couldn't be restored.
But, as 12+ years of providing amazing, free, fan arrangements of VGM hopefully proves, we're PERSISTENT. We're going to be launching a NEW kickstarter in the following weeks, we don't anticipate the same issues being a problem this time around, and it should be AWESOME. Details are forthcoming, but know that either way, this is going to be an amazing album, and I'm truly hoping we will still have your support for take two of our fundraiser to help it shine!
Speaking of FF6, some n00b named halc sent in this mix of an obscure piece of VGM called 'Terra' or something, and we figured we should maybe post it and stuff:
"here's my dubstep remix of terra. unnecessary in more ways than one, I'm sure. ;]"
Ah, but one man's "unnecessary" is another man's essential... At the very least, for so oft-mixed a source tune, I haven't heard Ms. Branford's namesake theme done quite like this. I should clarify that this is NOT from the upcoming album, but halc WILL be arranging 'Strago' for Balance & Ruin, so you can expect more of his 9-bit excellence. Here he pairs his style with some of dem "dubstep elements" dat seem almost as polarizing as the upcoming election, resulting in what I consider a win. Judges apparently agreed since their votes consisted of the word "YES" and little more of worth, leaving me with nothing to quote and thus pad this writeup with. Wankers.Textures are crunchy, there are actually some jazz flavors here and there, at 2'12" things go double-time for a nice pickup, and the last two minutes are more about the progression than the melody, dubbing and stepping and wobbling and what not over familiar chords. Something a bit different from halc, but it needed to be, to breath new life into a source that's been mixed so much. Great stuff, looking forward to his final take on 'Strago' for the album, thanks for your support & patience, and be on the lookout for a new Balance & Ruin kickstarter sometime next month!

Always loved this track, never got to comment on it till now. What I wanted to say all this time (aside from the obligatory praise - this is an excellent piece of music!): the ending part here reminds me of how one of the remixes/versions for Björk's "All Is Full of Love" ends, though I think it is some sort of accordion used in her piece? But the sound quality and style of melody (or sound, lacking musical vocabulary here) is quite similar. Considering how much I love that song in that particular version, I could not help but love this remix of Terra as well!

What a neat idea to blend chips with wubwubs and to thrown in the gorgeous Terra theme. I've never expected it to be done in such way, but it seems to work. But hey, it's halc, his stuff is always good! Love the fast-paced section @ 2:12. CVery creative mix, Mr. Wheeler!

Dubstep chiptune ReMix. That alone is a fascinating choice for an arrangement. Luckily halc is the type of artist who can pull it off in a classy way. Terrific ReMix of Terra and Awakening in a very interesting style that I would mind hearing more of. Also, that section between 2:45-3:00, damn fine bit work, man!

Sort of well done, buy yuck: dubstep. Worse was the instrument/sample selection. Not my cup of tea.

So.. dubstep meets MUSIC meets chiptunes. Love it. This is when I can actually enjoy dubstep's wobble-wub-wub bass and halfstep beats. This is the kind of dubstep that should have gotten popular, or at least something very similar. I'm rather biased against a lot of major dubstep because it's basically Bassturbation and "Look what I can do with FILTERS!" wub-wob-wu-wu-wu-WOB with no real composition or attempt at arrangement. Thank you, halc, for this wonderful MUSICAL dubstep.

I came across this track listening to OCRadio, via Rainwave. I have to admit, the title of the track made me a little leery, but I'm glad it won its vote. What sweet, sweet beats.
Excellent mix, production off the charts, and -I- dig the chiptunes. Forget any more instruments, I love the digital sound of this mix.
Supremely awesome. WTB moar.

I would love to hear something like this with more organic instruments.
Here's an example of what I mean... plus it has about 25 Mill hits!
Hearing this mix is what made me decide to look around a bit... and after hearing that linked song, I began thinking what this would sound like with... I don't know a tuba, trumpet, or piano accompanying it.

Sure, it might have not been that "necessary", and it also might not have been as emotionally grabbing as most iterations of Terra's theme generally try to be... But while deviating from the source material to a fair extent, you still managed to be faithful to it, and the result was a very pleasant track. Surely, this is a piece worth downloading.

To me, it sounds like a mix of both Awakening (which is based on the main Terra theme) and the actual Terra theme
Correct, it's both. Also, "ha!" at 9-bit dubwub.

Isn't this actually a remix of "Awakening"?

I've already listened to this 3 times. Awesome ReMix halc, I love the mix and mash-up of using 8-bit chiptunes with the beat... I wish this was going to be on FFVI:BR

djpretzel, keep kicking it on the FF VI project. We all appreciate the persistence and dedication! I truly am amazed at the quality and work that goes on at OC Remix
This mix is a neat little appetizer to the main course. If you've heard FF VI, you've heard Terra's theme remixed, so I can imagine a little fatigue, but definitely stick around for the middle part of the mix (2:00 or so on). Things kick up a notch and there's some really enjoyable ideas in there. Best part of the mix!
