Arranging the music of one song...
"Wondering About My Loved Ones"
Primary Game: Wolfenstein 3D (Apogee , 1992, DOS), music by Bobby PrincePosted 2012-10-12, evaluated by the judges panel
From newcomer Cristián Escobar, alias Psycho Crusher (Delicious!), comes a really emotional, dramatic rock arrangement of Wolfenstein 3D:
"I always liked how the original menu music from Wolfenstein 3D sounded. It has the classic melancholic atmosphere that I love so much. I tried something different this time, I used a post-rock kind of sound with heavily layered guitars and tremolo picking notes. Thanks for listening, guys. Greetings from Chile!"
First off, I always love seeing submissions from ALL over the world; yes the site is in English and yes we have a lot of American, Canadian, and British visitors, but music is a universal language, and that includes VGM. There's a deliberate anguish here & a tension that remind me of Ailsean's track from Heroes & Villains, which I loved, and the post-rock emphasis on texture lends the melody a forceful, direct power. Emunator writes:
"After judging your last submission, I knew you had some solid guitar playing chops but I wasn't expecting them to be applied in such a unique and expressive way. But, for the record, I was totally floored when I first listened to this, just as a listener. Then afterward, when I listened to the original and saw how you pulled from the riffs and the dark, brooding mood of the source to craft a remix that's melodically identical, but at the same time very expansive, it blew my mind."
It's really good stuff, to be sure. A bit repetitive, as some judges noted, and the drums are a little thin compared to the giant guitar tones Cristián conjures, but what compensates for all that is the raw emotional impact achieved, which also reflects the blunt drama of the mix title. It's not light listening, musically or thematically, but I love it all more for the weight it conveys. Fishy concurs:
"I know it sounds repetitive but this is just awesome. There are things that could be improved (kick/snare) but this is raw appreciation and it's super effective. Just for sheer feelin' you get a yes my friend."
Memorable debut from Psycho Crusher that makes up for any shortcomings with impact & feeling - great stuff!

Awesome. While I do agree that the drums among a few other little things could do with a little sprucing up, all in all, I think this ReMix carries out the musical message and feelings that I think you were after fairly well. Not bad at all, pretty good debut mix.

This has an awesome atmosphere, a great vibe. I agree that it's not mixed perfectly and the thin drums, but this is still a mix I'll probably listen a lot. Great stuff!

oh yessssssss. it's perfect.
Man man mannnnnn, the second half of the song with the intense lead guitar strumming is pure cheesecake, right on the money.
your Lavender Town arrangement is hella dope by the way.

There need to be MOAR remixes of music from this game. Because in game these days the original music is really drab, mediocre and too repetitive(Not to mention is a bit of a mediocre showcase for FM synth). It shows it's age certainly, but this remix breathes new life into this game's soundtrack.
I've been thinking of doing a remix like this of this song for a while since i've been replaying Wolf3D. But looks like someone beat me to it. And did it extremely well too. (Aside from some mixing issues. The leads have a bit too much high end and sound a bit piercing. Rhythms are a bit too bright as well, the clean guitars could've used that brightness instead I think)
Great work.

"In The House - In A Heartbeat". Awesome track.Excellent, more Wolfenstein love! I like. This reminds me an awful lot of the 28 Days Later soundtrack, where it starts lonely with a guitar, builds, builds, and builds to epic grungeness. I could envision hordes of undead running down the street to this track. (And yes I mean all of that in a good way.)
And that goes for this remix as well. Great to see some more PC mixes pop up.

Holy shit this was awesome. I mean I agree about the drums being awfully thin, but I could never have imagined anything like this coming from that old source.
