From newcomer Hans-Kristian Arntzen, aka Zoned, comes this dark, mellow instrumental that highlights acoustic components (drum kit, piano) against electronic bass, pads, and synths, taking on FFX sources with a lot of minor/major modulation and juicy progressions. Drums - while well-sequenced - are lacking a little dynamic realism and OOMPH relative to the rest of the soundscape, which is moody and persuasive; OA writes:
"This is a pretty subdued track, and I wasn't really sure about it at first, but came around with a few extra listens. I think my issue at first was that the drums are quiet and felt that they were lacking power because of the levels. The piano and pads combo is very nice, and the themes are blended well together."
I actually like that the dominance of the piano really lets the creepy-pretty chords shine, but some compression, some crunchier & more dynamic drums, and a lil bit of flourish here and there could have helped sell it all the more. As it stands though, this is a solid debut that integrates two themes successfully, and the first minute - sans drums - has a stark, melancholic beauty to it. I like the interplay between the piano and ephemeral lead synth, which takes on a counter-melody role at times, and the sheer quantity of interesting intonation and chromaticism is unique & refreshing. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what else Hans-Kristian has up his sleeve; I'd say that drums might be a weak spot at the moment, but that's one of the easier things to improve on relative to a lot of the things this mix gets right. I think plenty of people will dig his pensive, reserved, & flowing arrangement of these source tunes in the meantime.

Atmosphere that is dark and moody, with some beautifully haunting piano moving things along? Yes please! Five minutes really pass by quickly with this one, it's just so engaging, which is a feat for atmospheric tunes like this. Nice work in getting a little less dark and a bit more wonderous as the mix went on. That was cool. Great debut ReMix, Zoned.

What a wonderful work this is! It's smooth and intriguing, and truly an underrated effort. A fantastic listen! I could wander the Via Purifico for a long time as long as I had this song in my back pocket...

Thanks so much for the nice comments This mix is actually quite old by now, and I've moved on to solo piano since, but this will encourage me to make more video game arrangements.

I know others have already gushed about the atmosphere, but I have to gush more: dat atmosphere. DAT ATMOSPHERE. It's just... it's perfect. And the piano work is gorgeous, simply gorgeous, and fits perfectly with the rest of the track. Intellectually, I know it's a 5+ minute piece, but every time I listen to it when it's over I find myself going, "There's no way that was five minutes, I want more!" ...and that can only be a good thing.
Definitely looking forward to more music from the artist.

I know that I'm going against the grain, but I actually think that the drums are a bit too loud in this song--namely the high-hats. A bit quieter, and it would easily blend in with the subtle beauty of the music.
Other than that, I like the mix--especially the transition to a more cheery tone around 3:00.

I love the atmosphere and piano in this song! Two amazing source themes too, great job!

I adore the atmosphere in this song. Especially since these are two of my favorite track in the soundtrack, "Silence Before The Storm" being perhaps one of my all-time favorite game songs.
The synthetic/acoustic blend was very tasteful, I really liked the piano and pads. But the drums seemed like they just happened to be playing at the same time, they don't sit very well in the mix and/or are just way too busy at times. Perhaps the "Silence..." part would've benefited from rhythmic displacement in the melody, but that's just me being nitpicky now.
Anyway, thanks for remixing these songs, it's going to my playlist
