Absolutely badass Phoenix Wright hip-hop/jazz collab from melody & newcomer Detective Tuesday - following 2P & The Joker's 'Solace' from January, 2013 is already a great year for hip-hop/rap on OCR, and we're not even out of the first quarter! Peter's been growing as an artist, and even his earlier mixes are great, but this collaboration has yielded something completely new, something that puts his sound in a different light & pairs it with great lyrics and fantastic execution from DT.
Stop reading right now & download it, okay?
melody writes:
"coming at you guys with another rearrangement. with this musical offering, i feel Masakazu Sugimori strove to thematically depict the dualities that inhabit the courtrooms of Phoenix Wright. imagine this: the defense and prosecution are locked into a delicate tug-of-war between tenseness and composure, while the gallery is subject to the silence within the storm. every step is carefully calculated and tread on thin ice; the judge exudes equanimity as his sway precariously sits under an unrelenting barrage of potentially convicting or potentially liberating evidence. that's the gist anyway. you guys be the judges (no pun intended) of our success in conveying those themes. speaking of us, to take this song to new heights, i enlisted Detective Tuesday for his lyrical prowess. when pressed for a statement, this is all he had to say: 'The beat made me do it.'"
Courtroom FX intro us in, as the judge's gavel gives way to mellow piano, crunchy drums, sizzling cymbals, swirling string lines, some sampled quotes about conformity & justice that work rather well, and then DT's entrance at 1'01" - "court is now in session" - indeed... Peter brings in a bassline that shows a lot of restraint but then busts some nice lines when it's appropriate and actually adds something, and the piano playing is sublime, with tons of flourishes and waterfall descents. It's sexy, it's classy, and it goes hand in hand with Tuesday's rapping, which sells the concept and lays it all out with authority & style. I'd love to see these two collab again because their respective talents really complement each other and the result is something special.
Nothing else to say; brilliant stuff.

This is amazing! Somehow I've never heard this track before, and it's not at all my usual kind of music, but the flow, the mix, the instrumentation! It's all so good!

The flow, the imagery, the wordplay! Feels like MFDOOM in the courtroom, amazing and original remix!

Interesting concept, nice instrumental too. I really like how the instruments alone create the atmosphere of a courtroom while all the rapping is going on; it's very atmospheric stuff. Also, sweet piano runs. Now this is a creative mix.

This is some rap I can get behind. I watched phoenix wright playthroughs as a kid () and recently took a Criminal Justice class, so I have a better idea of how court proceedings work and can understand this better. Awesome piano playing, and I don't think the lyrics were overdone.

I could've sworn I heard this a long time ago before it was
posted and it might've been on #ocremix, but I can never really
be sure. melody's remixes always seem to continue in the same
vein of awesomeness. I always felt I might've been too critical
of his choice of drums, but as time goes by, you just kinda get
used to it and realize, "this is his sound." He
made them work over time and he marked his signature at
OverClocked ReMix. I can't help but respect him for that.
But with this remix specifically, it's really, really awesome.
Not only because of the arrangement and smooth feel of the sounds
incorporated, but because if you'd just heard this on your
mobile device or iPod without any tags, you'd just think it was
another well arranged production that didn't ever have any
connection to a game soundtrack. The lyrics are extremely well
done and the piano is especially crisp, bravo to both of
you.

Wait, what's this? A downright awesome blend of jazzy piano, rock-solid drums, fresh strings and rapping which tells us about a trial? Yes, please! I hope these guys will collaborate more sometime. This is a truly catchy kind of hip-hop, so slick.

I heard this whilst listening to this radio show, and it was an instant download! Some of the finest flows ever to be found on this fair fansite. Really natural, organic feel to the beat, and it's just so damn cool.

Downright fantastic guys Some of the most solid rapping I've ever heard on OCR, and melody... you haven't lost your touch!

Hey, awesome work. About time it got posted. Everything from the piano to the drums and vocals blend in perfectly. It was already top notch when I heard it way back when too.

Sick! I loved every second of this. Dope flow, fantastic beat, and a very clever concept - I really dig the dialogue and narrative elements. 10/10!

Just when I've been trying to put down some Ace Attorney hip hop of my own...
This is phenomenal, guys; I love it.

[Del Close and John Brent excerpts sampled from How to Speak Hip]
Detective Tuesday:
Yeah.
melody... and I'm Tuesday.
Please, be seated.
Del Close:
Mr. Romo, I must admit that I'm puzzled. You hipsters claim to be such relaxed, free spirits, yet your rules for social behavior are even more set tight and rigid than those of square society.
John Brent:
Yes, uh... a-a lot of the simple, everyday behavior is illegal. And so there's always a lot of heat on the scene. Now, if you break the rules of hip, you get put down, that's true. But you break the square rules and they throw you in the slam, and that's a big difference.
Detective Tuesday:
Court is now in session. Check it.
Prosecution ready, Defense ready,
Tuesday in front of the judge, things could get heavy.
"Your honor, I don't kill beats! I don't even got skills, please! I plead not guilty!"
"Ha...!" A laugh from the prosecution.
"You and your crew know exactly what y'all've been doin'!
Your songs are ruthless, witnesses saw you do it,
Mr. Wrong'll not be refutin' the evidence I got to prove it."
Defense says, "I bet it's baseless conjecture.
Tuesday been wack since he started in grade eleven.
Ever heard his tracks? He ain't sayin' nothin'.
Not a single word about how he sprayed a gun clip."
The jury's whispering. Judge grips the gavel-
SLAM! "Order in the court! Let's see how this thing unravels...
Mr. Karma, you may call your first witness."
"Thank you very much, your honor. Let us begin then."
The courtroom's quiet, but it gets loud
in the mind that's wondering what exactly went down:
The truth... only thing we came for.
Facts come together to make sure it takes form,
So we listen close. Every minute, no, every tick that goes,
'cause those who miss it be actin' as if they didn't know
unlike the man swearin' oath as he gets into his seat.
"Mr. Witness, spit your testimony, please."
"Ayo, I heard the man rap. It was murder, stand back when he hold the mic,
'cause he straight blowin' like dynamite!
Tougher than Final Fight. Through the streets wreckless,
spittin' flows that's the closest to musical perfection,
forget it!
It's impossible to match how he write a song.
Ain't a single one of these rappers goin' quite as hard-"
"Hold it! I heard he choked and lost two battles."
"Yeah, but his flow's smooth like melody on the piano!"
"Yeah, um... no further questions, Your Honor."
Del Close:
"Cool" means something all by itself, you know, but...but it's like trying to define hip. You know he'll- hip in general, or righteousness, you know? You can give a hundred examples of what it isn't, but, man, you'll have a hell of a time saying what it is.
Detective Tuesday:
"Now, for those that still need to be convinced,
this is from the crime scene, OC ReMix.
It's irrefutable, solid, conclusive, gruesome.
Tuesday, why'd you have to do it? Why?"
Suddenly, he stands forth,
different mood in his eyes, he seems to have transformed.
"The DJ was lettin' tracks spin like 'that's sick,'
I made that crap backflip in a casket!
Bastards was tryna play me talkin' 'bout I'm the wackest,
and how I oughta care 'bout what they think is happ'nin'.
Now as for the crime? I ain't plan it or practice,
though it wasn't an accident. My ears just told my brain: "Yo, that's it.
I'm glad they found the tape to back it, I'll take this moment to admit, I'm great at rappin'."
A savage that broke free from the cage he was trapped in.
As they dragged him away, all that was heard was his laughin'.
GUILTY.
