ReMix:Kirby Super Star "Chef Kawasaki's 16-bit Jazz Orchestra - Walkway of Stars" 2:54
By PROTO·DOME
Arranging the music of one song...
"The Battleship Halberd: Interior"
Primary Game: Kirby Super Star (Nintendo , 1996, SNES), music by Dan Miyakawa, Jun IshikawaPosted 2013-03-11, evaluated by the judges panel
The award for goofiest mix title on MWW probably goes to PROTO·DOME, who clarifies the sixteen-bittyness of his creation:
"If you like 8-bit, you'll feel a little disappointed, this is 16-bit. No, don't cry, grow up, the late 80's was ages ago. The early 90's is cool now. Okay, this one is a little liberal in the way it treats the source, but it is pretty much constantly source, just SLOOOOOWWWWW'd down. Don't be afraid to put YES. I'll accept YES (borderline) too, I'm a pretty easy-going guy.
Damn, I love Kirby."
So sad for poor 32-bit & above that no one will (probably/hopefully) ever try to quantify their bus sizes as distinct musical aesthetics and create any sort of trend/movement around them. Blake "Jazzy McJazzerton" Troise busted out his killer vibes chops for this mix, which casts playful lines around the source tunes over a syncopated groove & crunchy drums. Not 8-bit crunchy, 16-bit crunchy, which is more like a slightly toasted bagel. Director Arek writes:
"PROTO is an amazing talent. Not only is a genius with music, but he also is quite the Photoshop savant. Both his art and music contributions "carry" you away. I simply love the production value of the track. To quote halc, "so good.""
Co-director Drew adds:
"I freakin' love this song. The style adaptation might seem a bit liberal at first, but the treatment of the melodies is downright nostalgic. Some extremely well treated SNES soundfonts are the icing on the cake - I mean, just listen to that intro again... so good. <3"
The judges panel weighed in primarily because the arrangement is a little liberal, but had no major beef; OA punderstands:
"Pretty pleasant stuff, I really enjoyed the vibe and the vibes. Ohhhh, see what I did there? Nice stuttering beats and a laid back and care-free arrangement that has a lot of variation and good handling of the melody and leads trading off. I wish it was a little longer, but everything that is on display is totally solid.
The guitar was a little on the fake side, but was well-sequenced, and had a good room sound applied. I guess it stuck out to me in a sea of other obviously sampled instruments because it sort of hit an uncanny valley. Overall a little on the short side, but it is packed with delicious Kirby power! NOM!"
Creative, jazzy, smooth stuff from Blake that intentionally & successfully blends samples of varying verisimilitude into a fresh, head-nodding, toe-tapping, spiralling jam, lending Milky Way Wishes some panache & smoky ambiance in the process!

So, as far as I know, Blake's mixes are either saxxy and jazzy, or happy and chippy. Well, here we have an excellent mash-up of jazz and chiptunes. The crunchy 16-bit drums and other SNES sounds, combined with killer vibes and pleasant acoustic guitar create an awesome, relaxing, lounge-ish mix, which is perfect for a walk in a park on a sunny summer day. The only thing I hate about this song is that it's soooo short; but anyway, it's soooo great.
P.S. It reminds me of

Well, to say that I'm surprised would be an understatement. The thought of Halberd jazz made me wonder a tad, but it's not bad at all. And looks like I'm not the only one who thought his phone was vibrating at 1:40. That's just great man. I like how you managed to toss in the opening theme in there at the end. Nice jazzy way to start the day off.

Lovely song, but it sent me diving around for my phone..I thought it was vibrating...it was just the song:P Stupid phantom phone noises XD This song plus the "ruin boss themes with blues and jazz" rejoinder on OCR's YT comments section for the trailer makes me grin stupidly.

Insta-fav, here. Brilliant use of the 16bit sounds effects, like the sparkly star, sprinkled around the arrangement. Definitely not what you would expect from the source which made it fun to listen to.
Proto can jazz anything into gold.
