Arranging the music of one song...
"Last Boss"
Primary Game: Mega Man 4 (Capcom , 1991, NES), music by Minae FujiiPosted 2013-04-09, evaluated by the judges panel
From newcomer DR.WELI comes a rapid-fire electronic MM4 arrangement with some electrifried synth patterns, a somewhat chippish aesthetic (lots of basic waveforms), some cheeky (in a good way) ritardando transition FX, and a heapin' helpin' of energy:
"I've always wanted to make a VGM remix and finally took the effort to do so. I chose the last boss theme from my favorite NES game Mega Man 4. The actual track is basically just a 10 second loop so I tried my best to expand on that theme and take the composition a bit further. The genre is drum and bass which was a natural choice for an epic last boss track. Enjoy!"
For a debut mix, there's a lot of great things going on here - far from cookie-cutter, DW peppers this track with changeups, creative interpretation & expansion of the source tune, and a smorgasbord of synths, all while never letting up on the intensity & drive. OA writes:
"The arrangement is excellent; taking turns deconstructing and then expanding upon the source track. The chip sound is a little weird at first, as it sounds like you just took the source and added stuff, but it's actually way cleaner sounding chips than the original, and there are plenty of spatial effects added, similar to halc, or his alter ego, Benny Briggz would do.
The beat foundation is a little repetitive, but a lot of little bits get added on to keep it from getting too stale. Production is solid throughout, with good panning and the flow the track is solid as well. This is really nice, definitely would like to hear more work by you."
Ditto that from me, and also from DarkeSword:
"There's a really wicked energy in this piece that I dig. Chip stuff is solid with the right amount of effects. Great treatment of the source; I agree with halc, the chorus is hot. Non-chip synths are really hot too. Solid stuff, Doctor."
Great first mix from DR.WELI; here's hoping he follows it up with more!

I'm impressed by this track never losing its momentum or feeling stale even though the the main melody and beat hardly change. This sounds like a "Black Wing Metamorphosis"-tier mega-collab - if I were to guess who made this track, my answer would be something like "Danny Baranowsky, Benjamin Briggs, Phonetic Hero, DaMonz, Trainbeat" (and a collab between you and any of these people would turn out amazing). Good stuff.

I wasn't fortunate enough to own a copy of ANY Megaman games growing up, but honestly I listened to this on a whim and all I can say is I'm now marching though Megaman 3 and I'm going to take them all down! Thanks for inspiring an 'ol NES warrior!

Thanks for all the kindness! I'm flattered that someone got inspired by this! Looking forward for your remix(es)
I'm currently working on an other DNB remix of the Dr.Cossack stage so stay tuned. The mix will be more polished than this one for sure...

From one newcomer to the next; I definitely tip my hat to you sir. A lot of debut stuff i've heard on OCR loses my interest and I use it as an exercise to what could be improved on, but while not perfect; it's clearly a labor of love with all that amazing synths you threw in there kept me hooked the whole time.
I've lurked in the shadows for quite a while on OCR; I think because of the quality of your debut; you just gave me the confidence I needed to finally start a track of my own.
Thank You

Whoa, nice work with the hyper electronic opening. Love the way this picks up even more after the second minute. It's amazing to hear something slightly chippy and electronic go this fast and hard while keeping a melody going that doesn't sound overly rushed. Awesome debut DR. WELI.

I never lost interest. Up beat and true to the song, the drop at :50 followed by the pick up was a nice touch, the keys playing back up to the melody was real tasteful and clean. An all around well put together song! Added to the ipod!
