We've slowed down a little lately as we see Balance & Ruin into the final stages and coordinate a lot of logistics - trust me, things will pick up, and late Spring & early Summer should be crazypants. Bear with us a bit; I promise it'll be worth it! To help end the five-day mix drought we've got newcomer Brent Wollman with a truly original Descent & Descent II arrangement that combines both games' ending themes into an epic, over-the-top rock-metal-electronica opus with some minimalist vocoded vocals. It's creative enough stylistically to begin with, but when you factor in the combination of ending themes from the first two Descent games, this is one of those mixes that you wouldn't have anticipated being made in a zillion years, but you're sure glad it was. The artist writes:
"This mix took forever. I'm not sure why, but I had a really hard time getting everything to sound right. At this point I think I finally have something good. It is a remix of a couple tracks I've loved for a long time. I used to watch the credits sequence to Descent I and II over and over just to hear this music, so I really wanted to do the source tunes justice."
He definitely did; both source tunes are easily identifiable, but they've been integrated well, expanded intelligently, and the overall energy level has been bumped up exponentially - for Descent fans, I think this is a dream come true, and even those less familiar with the games' musics are in for something kickass & unique. Emunator writes:
"Wow, color me impressed! This might be one of my favorite arrangements that I've heard since I started judging. It starts off with some ambiance that really sets up a dark, brooding mood. Over the course of the piece it goes through some very powerful crescendos - the buildups and breakdowns keep me engaged. I also like how well you've balanced your levels: the drums are punchy and thick but not overpowering and work well with the stutters/glitches that you've employed, the bass texture is rich and clean, and your rhythm guitars command attention but don't hog, either. The clean guitar section and the solo that followed blew my mind <3"
Refreshing game choice AND refreshing execution make for a memorable debut from Brent, who's given us something different, contributed to helping address the relative scarcity of PC/DOS ReMixes, and made some great music!

A journey of a mix. Can't really describe it and don't want to because the feeling is one of those better left unsaid. I can see this becoming a favorite. Amazing sense of narrative.

Will not obtain... Ahem, sorry. So this remix clearly shows that Brent has some mixes that are less odd and more melodic than his latest works. The idea to blend ambient textures with some excellent shreddage, toe-tapping electronica and minimalist vocals is surely neat. The whole piece sounds really complex. Ok, let's be honest - 27 x "Will not obtain" = pure win. I love how the same phrase repeats, while the musical background itself changes several times. The drop at 3:25 is awesome. It's like you're flying through the outer space. So great!

Love it. Couldn't of picked a better track from Descent 2 to remix. I was the same. Just sitting through the credits just listening to the MIDI/AWE32 versions of it.
Really needs to be more Descent remixes and I'm glad we have a few talented remixers to step up to the plate.
Question is. What are the vocals in the background saying and why do they sound so familiar?

One of the most complete ReMixes I've heard in a while. Everything has it's place in this arrangement as a plus and I heard nothing wrong in the production either. Great use of vocoded vocals. Loved the combination of metal and electronic elements. Kickass debut, Brent.

Definitely a remix that takes a few listens to enjoy fully, a lot of diversity and fantastic transitions especially near the end. Reading the write-up I was expecting metal - and the parts that rock are pretty great, but I'm enjoying this for its electronic aspects, and the generally laid back feel. With everyone struggling to make hyper-energetic music it is GREAT to hear something like this that focuses on substance and atmosphere.

Damn, I haven't heard an ocremix this complex and awesome since... I guess some of zircon's past works? I loved the synth solos and glitching, awesome job.

More Descent music is always a good thing, especially when it's as well executed as this is. I was a bit hesitant of the track at first, but it slowly won me over, and when I realized around the 3:00 mark I was enjoying myself thoroughly I just gave in. Great debut track!

I loved the music in them so this is mega refreshing.
Awesome first remix by you Brent!
Keep it up!
